Chuck Rhoades (Paul Giamatti) says to Bobby Axlerod, "There's a saying in baseball: towns fire managers. Owners just give them the bad news." Paul Giamatti's father, Angelo Bartlett "Bart" Giamatti, was commissioner of Major League Baseball from April 1989 until his death in September 1989. Although his tenure as commissioner was brief, he was commissioner during the most famous dismissal of a manager in baseball history: the decision to render Pete Rose as "permanently ineligible" from baseball because he was found to have bet on Major League games. In 2018, Paul Giamatti told the New York Times that, unlike his father, he actually doesn't care that much about baseball: "I'm not a big sports fan, but I like sports movies."

What was the point of this beginning?

The opening scene of a woman peeing on a hog-tied man because he likes it... What was the point of that? Mindless titillation? Gratuitous and unnecessary, as it seems to have nothing whatsoever to do with the plot. People keep telling me this show has brilliant writing. WHEN? Can someone please tell me when this show gets "brilliant?" Because it shows absolutely no promise of any kind in the first 20 minutes. We aren't introduced to any interesting, much less 'likable' characters, the plot has absolutely failed to grab any attention, and I don't care about what happens next. So, the show looks like yet another pointless soap opera about people I don't care about. The real question isn't whether or not the character is guilty, but rather why would anyone want to watch this?
