Faithfully Yours Ending Explained: The Real Meaning Of The Netflix Movie
Image
Faithfully Yours blends sex and twists like classic thrillers, but its ending subverts gender roles. Critics praised the challenging gender norms, but some viewers found the movie's ending unsatisfying. The movie's dark twists showcase how lying destroys relationships, leading to an ultimately pessimistic view on marriage.

The Netflix thriller Faithfully Yours has all the twists and turns of the best suspense movies. Released in 2022 and directed by Andr van Duren, Faithfully Yours follows friends Isabel and Bodil as they embark on one of their supposed "girl's trips," which is a cover for their mutual marital infidelity. However, things begin to go awry when Isabel is seemingly killed, and Bodil is trapped in a web of her lies. Blending the sex and twists of the classic thrillers of the past, Faithfully Yours isn't necessarily the most inventive film, but it isn't without its deeper meaning.

Critic reviews were relatively mixed when it came to Faithfully Yours.

For this review, we used our very own Cve metric after 14 days to have more titles to compare on a more equal foot, and we also used IMDb to get a sense of the most liked titles of the year.

Editor’s note: This first appeared on Netflix n Chiffres, a Substack newsletter that covers streaming SVOD viewership in detail. Any views marked with an asterisk indicate that they’re an estimated figure.

The Progressive Sexual Norms of ‘Faithfully Yours’ [Sex Crimes]
Image
Judge Bodil Backer (Bracha van Doesburgh) seemingly has it all: she’s a no-nonsense Judge and has a great home life with her doctor husband Milan (Nasrdin Dchar) and pre-teen son Ben (Damiano Incani).

At the start of director André van Duren’s Erotic Thriller, Bo is preparing for a girls weekend away with her best friend Isabel (Elise Schaap). They leave their husbands behind in Amsterdam, board a train for Bo’s family beach house in Belgium and outline plans for their weekend, which includes a burner phone, a large sum of money, and an expensive suite at a high-end hotel for Isabel.

Faithfully Yours has a fantastic central premise: a few times a year the two women use each other as cover while they cheat on their husbands. One woman will attend a lecture or visit a museum and snap photos to send to the husbands as an alibi.

Martin Scorsese’s ‘The Irishman’ Kicked off Netflix’s Top 10 by J.Lo’s ‘The Mother’
Image
It’s probably not getting an Oscar nominations anytime soon, but “The Mother” has bested Martin Scorsese’s “The Irishman” where it counts: Netflix viewership metrics. Jennifer Lopez’s thriller film has entered the streamer’s list of Top 10 most popular English-language films at No. 8, knocking Scorsese’s three-and-a-half hour mobster epic out of the upper echelon.

Netflix announced the news on Tuesday, along with the release of viewership numbers for the week of May 29 to June 4. “The Mother,” which has streamed for four weeks after premiering on Netflix May 12, has now been watched for a total of 229.30 million total hours by Netflix subscribers. That’s enough to place it between “Extraction” (231.340 million hours) and “Purple Hearts” (228.69 million hours) on the all-time list, and bump “The Irishman,” which peaked at 214.57 million hours viewed after its first 28 days on the streamer, from the list.

Netflix’s all-time Film list now looks like this:

The Dutch Mystery Movie That Claimed A Spot In Netflix's Top 10
Image
I'm not the biggest fan of Netflix. I don't want to get into a huge rant about it, but my biggest issue is that here in the Czech Republic, it takes the service forever to upload any new movies. Then, when something fresh finally drops, it's usually something starring Ryan Reynolds, Adam Sandler, or Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. I may be exaggerating, but that's what it feels like; too many mediocre Netflix originals and not much in the way of variety beyond the most mainstream of offerings.

To give Netflix its due, it does throw up some surprises from time to time. Given how subtitle-adverse many viewers in English-speaking countries can be, they took a bit of a chance on "Squid Game," but it went on to become a phenomenon and further advanced the cause of the booming Korean entertainment industry. Then there was "Cobra Kai," which sounded a lot...

The French Crime Thriller That Claimed Netflix's Number 1 Spot
Image
Netflix has its fair share of problems, but its impressive slate of films and shows from all over the world isn't one of them. The streamer regularly makes new international shows and movies available to a mass audience, and with big hits like "Squid Game," "Money Heist," and "Dark," many of the most acclaimed and talked-about non-English language shows around these days come courtesy of Netflix.

Unfortunately, the streamer's persnickety algorithm and surplus of content means not everyone gets the memo when a new film or show drops. That means a movie or series can manage to earn a spot as the most-watched non-English project on the streamer — as the French thriller "Aka," Mexican satire "¡Que viva México!" and the Norwegian monster film "Troll" all did this month, per Netflix's internal metrics — without viewers even knowing about them. Though Netflix isn't particularly transparent with its viewership data, it does offer...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 15): Jennifer Lopez’s ‘The Mother’ and Shonda Rhimes’ ‘Queen Charlotte’ remain atop the charts
Image
The Netflix movie and TV series that have been dominating the streamer’s weekly viewing chart were both still atop the Top 10 chart for the week of May 15. Read on for this week’s analysis.

Jennifer Lopez‘s action-thriller “The Mother” burst into the weekly streaming chart last week, and it topped the English films list for a second week with 94.4 million hours viewed globally. That means the movie has been viewed by almost 90 million accounts, i.e. 178.1 million hours viewed divided by the movie’s 1.96 hour runtime. It remained in the Top 10 in 93 countries with many of those regions, including the U.S. and Canada, the #1 viewed movie.

The documentary “Anna Nicole Smith: You Don’t Know Me” also entered the charts in second place with 15.7 million hours viewed, followed by a number of non-Netflix films like Seth McFarlane‘s hit comedy “Ted,” Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto,” and the sci-fi thriller “Synchronic.

No Streamer, No Problem: Lionsgate and Sony Movies Thrive at Home Without Them
Image
With six of the top eight film distributors committed to their own streaming sites — and all the expenses that come with them — the two studios that operate without a streamer continue to elevate home viewing without that heavy investment.

Universal has three films occupying eight positions this week, led by the just-released “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” that’s #1 on all three VOD charts. Lionsgate also has three films in eight slots, while Sony has three films in six slots — plus, three more films in the Netflix top 10.

Multiple placements aren’t unusual for Universal; it has high volume as well as a consistent PVOD policy that often sees titles surface in a month or less. For the scrappier Lionsgate, this achievement demanded a lot of smart strategy. Both “Operation Fortune: Russe de Guerre” and “Sisu” showed limited interest in theaters (each grossed around $7 million). Yet each has shown strength on PVOD,...

‘Faithfully Yours’ (2023) Review: A Predictable Murder Mystery That Would Keep You Hooked
Image
Murder mysteries are hardly ever uninteresting. We all grew up reading Agatha Christie’s novels. There was no way that they would not keep us hooked. Murder mysteries have taken various forms over the years. While some were successful, many were duds. Knives Out was one of a kind, but then we also had a film called The Girl On The Train, which was quite the “train” wreck. If murder mysteries are not done well and do not tickle your brain to figure out who the murderer might be, they become a bore. Faithfully Yours dangerously treads the line between being interesting and predictable, at the same time. But why? Written and directed by André van Duren; and other writers include Paul Jan Nelissen and Elisabeth Lodeizen, Faithfully Yours centers around a woman’s disappearance from the scene of a crime and her friends and family trying to get to...

Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 8): ‘The Mother’ debuts on top with ‘Queen Charlotte’ holding firm on television chart
Image
When you debut a new movie starring a major A-lister like Jennifer Lopez on streaming, it’s likely to be successful, and that was the case with Netflix’s new action-thriller “The Mother.” It debuted atop the Netflix Top 10 (Week of May 8) viewing chart, far ahead of the second-place film “A Man Called Otto.” Read on for more analysis.

Directed by Niki Caro, Lopez’s “The Mother” hit the streamer on Friday and managed to rack up 83.7 million global viewing hours to top the English film chart over a number of non-Netflix movies. It was the #1 film in the U.S. and Canada, as well as 80 other countries, and it was in the top 10 in 93 countries total.

Tom Hanks‘ “A Man Called Otto” dropped to second place with 19.9 million hours viewed, followed by DreamWorks Animation’s 10-year-old animated film “The Croods” with 8.7 million hours viewed.

What’s New on Netflix in May 2023
Image
Must-watch comedy series, eye-opening documentaries and an expansion of the “Bridgerton” universe are among the noteworthy additions to Netflix this month. May 12 sees the premiere of Jennifer Lopez’s new Netflix original film “The Mother,” in which she plays an assassin lured back in for one last job. And on May 23, the documentary “Victim/Suspect” examines how sexual assault victims too often get turned into suspects when they report their assaults.

“Queen Charlotte,” the “Bridgerton” prequel series, arrives on May 4 while a new season of Tim Robinson’s sketch series “I Think You Should Leave” drops on May 30. And if you missed the most recent season of the niche (but delightful) comedy series “Documentary Now!,” you can stream that on Netflix starting May 9.

Netflix New Releases: May 2023
Image
Netflix recently announced it would be investing $2.5 billion into South Korean programming. Before Squid Game season 2 comes down the pike, however, the first seeds of that investment will bear fruit for Netflix in May 2023.

Netflix’s list of new releases for May 2023 is highlighted by the May 12 release of Korean series Black Knight. Set “in a dystopian 2071 devastated by air pollution,” this show will follow world-saving deliverymen known as “Black Knights.” Other international offerings this month include Japanese sumo drama Sanctuary on May 4 and Spanish crime thriller Muted on May 19.

Netflix’s domestic TV options this month include Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story on May 4. That will be followed by post-apocalyptic animated comedy Mulligan on May 12 and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s TV debut Fubar on May 25. And for those hoping for “triples,” I Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson premieres on May 30.

On the movie side of things, Netflix has an unusually busy month.
