The pilot was produced for Nickelodeon. The Modifyers co-creator, Chris Reccardi, has stated it was rejected in favor of producing La Granja (2007) and that Nickelodeon was not interested in show with female lead at the time.
The pilot gained a good amount of popularity due to Zone's pornographic parody made in 2013.
On May 2, 2019, Chris Reccardi died at the age of 54 after suffering a heart attack while surfing in Ventura, California.
Cartoon Network picked up the pilot after Nickelodeon rejected it, but dropped it after only airing the first half.
