Many of us subscribed to Disney+ to always have a bunch of Disney productions at hand.. You know, in case I simply need to watch The Lion King at 2am and can’t find my DVD in the dark.

But the streaming service offers so much more than just the well known favourites. There’s a whole sea of incredible films to discover – but with such extensive libraries, they can be hard to find. We’ve done our best to highlight 25 underrated films that you should give a chance to. This’ll be updated over time, too.

Per Variety, an update has been revealed that an animated series adaptation of Wings of Fire is now in the works at Prime Video. After it was first reported to be in the works in 2024, it's now been revealed that Aaron Waltke will serve as series showrunner, co-writer, and executive producer. Original Wings of Fire author Tui T. Sutherland is also co-writing the series with Waltke and will serve as an executive producer as well, alongside Marc Resteghini of Jack Tar Productions.

“Bridgerton” breakout Simon Ashley, Apple TV+’s “Surface” lead star Gugu Mbatha-Raw and the USC’s Annenberg Inclusion Initiative founder Dr. Stacy L. Smith are set to lead the lineup at the upcoming Women in Film Conference, to be held at Oxford University.

Exclusive: Rowan Blanchard has joined the series regular cast of Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale sequel series The Testaments, sources confirm to Deadline. She joins the previously announced leads, Chase Infiniti, Lucy Halliday and Ann Dowd, who returns as her original character, Aunt Lydia.

Big studios are always in competition with streaming services. However, the success some titles have on online platforms proves there is a way for all films to become successful, even when they're not big hits at the box office.

Netflix is one of the most open streaming services when it comes to its viewership data, releasing updated numbers every week. The reports shared by the giant streaming platform have often highlighted that big-budget productions are also popular online, but box office flops and titles with poor ratings get another chance as well. Netflix is once again turning a former theatrical flop into a streaming hit. 2019's "Don't Let Go," which stars Oscar nominee David Oyelowo ("Selma") and Storm Reid ("A Wrinkle in Time"), has found its audience more than five years after it failed to catch on during its original release. This is an interesting case where success may well be better late than never.

"Don't Let Go" has been rising through Netflix's top 10 most-watched movies list as of late and is currently sitting at number four on the streamer's charts, per FlixPatrol. It's even trending above other Netflix originals such as "Kinda Pregnant" and "Honeymoon Crasher." Not bad for a movie with a $5 million budget that made only $5 million at the box office in late summer 2019. But that's the power of Netflix, which generates more revenue than the entire global box office combined.

Nearly three decades ago, The Matrix made its mark on the science fiction genre, utilizing groundbreaking special effects and storytelling that had moral and philosophical depth. The modern sci-fi classic would also become a defining role for beloved actor Keanu Reeves, with his bullet dodging skills and surprise at learning Karate becoming integrated into '90s pop culture. Yet, the film franchise could have had a different famous face attached to the project, as infamously, Will Smith turned down the role to instead appear in the box office bomb Wild Wild West (at least he got that one catchy single out of it).

While the lore of Smith's disastrous career choice was not enough to derail his career, the actor appears to have recently reflected on the missed opportunity.

When it comes to science fiction franchises, Disney doesn't have the greatest track record. The studio's Star Wars content has been heavily criticized for a decade now, and other projects like Tomorrowland, A Wrinkle in Time, and the Tronseries never made much of a dent or garnered a big fanbase. However, perhaps the biggest sci-fi tragedy in Disney's entire catalog is 2012's John Carter, which adapted the long-beloved works of Edgar Rice Burroughs to the big screen. With Taylor Kitsch playing the leading John Carter of Mars, the film was supposed to spawn a trilogy that would have continued these intergalactic adventures. Unfortunately, poor marketing killed John Carter before it had the chance to jump too high off the ground — but what would the sequels have been like? From what we can tell, they would have been magnificent.

Throughout the 2010s, and lingering into the 2020s, massive, corporate-backed I.P. has dominated both the domestic box office and the American journalistic conversation about cinema in general. We live in a world where reporters, when they had an opportunity to sit down with Martin Scorsese to discuss new masterworks like "The Silence" or "The Wolf of Wall Street," decided to ask him about Captain America and his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Vocal subverters of the dominant paradigm repeatedly yawped that Hollywood should devote more time and resources to new ideas. After all, why be the next "Star Wars" when you can be the first of something different? Where, oh where were the original sci-fi/fantasy ideas?

When will Stranger Things Season 5 come out?

As of November 6, 2024, Netflix revealed that the final installment of the show looks to a 2025 release window, not 2026 like previously thought with how long production takes.

Production officially wrapped in December 2024 after it had reached the halfway point in July. Production on the final season kicked off in January 2024.

When I saw the trailer for Skeleton Crew, my first thought when I saw the sprawling suburban environment was that this was not the Star Wars I know and love. Zendaya? Yeah, she’s the queen of generosity. In 2018, the Greatest Showman star went full superhero mode by taking 300 kids from her hometown of Oakland to see Black Panther. No, this wasn’t some VIP event—this was a genuine love letter to her community. Zendaya tweeted, “Wakanda forever…Oakland forever,” as she celebrated her hometown squad because nothing screams “community hero” like showing up for the next generation.

And this wasn’t a one-and-done moment. Zendaya teased that she’d do it again for A Wrinkle in Time. The woman had a plan to keep the good vibes rolling.

But Zendaya wasn’t alone in this epic mission. Kids lost it at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta when they found out they’d be heading to the theater to see Black Panther as part of a lesson plan.

Storm Reid will not be returning for “Euphoria” Season 3, the actor revealed.

The episode titles for Stranger Things season 5 have been unveiled, and tease a potential new villain dubbed Camazotz. The Duffers Brothers have referenced countless movies, shows and books in Stranger Things over the years, from Aliens to It and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Perhaps the strongest influence (outside of Stephen King anyway) is Dungeons & Dragons. The franchise's young heroes are big fans of the fantasy roleplaying game and have labeled the various creatures they've encountered in The Upside Down after D&d monsters.

This includes the Demogorgon or season 4's big bad Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). The final season will likely maintain this tradition, though story details are still kept under lock and key. Netflix recently dropped the episode titles for the upcoming Stranger Things season 5, with episode one dubbed "The Crawl" and the final episode titled The Rightside Up," an inversion of season 1's finale "The Upside Down.

Netflix has officially announced that the fifth and final season of Stranger Things will premiere in 2025.

This confirmation was made on November 6, 2024, during the annual Stranger Things Day commemorating the in-universe date when Will Byers vanished into the Upside Down.

In celebration of this announcement, Netflix released a teaser video unveiling the titles of the upcoming season’s eight episodes: The Crawl, The Vanishing of…, The Turnbow Trap, Sorcerer, Shock Jock, Escape From Camazotz, The Bridge, and The Rightside Up.

Notably, the second episode’s title, The Vanishing of…, is partially redacted, evoking the series’ inaugural episode, The Vanishing of Will Byers.

This has led to speculation about which character might disappear in the final season.

The final episode, titled The Rightside Up, appears to be a deliberate inversion of the Season 1 finale, The Upside Down, suggesting a potential resolution to the series’ central conflict.

In the fall of 1987, one last adventure begins.

Some of these titles allude to earlier episodes: “The Vanishing of…” — revealed with the name fully obscured — invokes the series premiere “The Vanishing of Will Byers.” Fans online have already speculated that the new abductee could be Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike (Finn Wolfhard) who was reportedly recast with “Evil Dead Rise” actor Nell Fisher, but Netflix has not officially confirmed.

Filmmaker Jennifer Lee will make a surprise return to the franchise to direct Frozen 3 & 4. Lee rose to prominence as an animation director in 2013 with her feature film debut Frozen, which she wrote and co-directed with long-term Disney animator Chris Buck. The movie was a box office success, grossing over $1.28 billion globally against a production budget of $150 million. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and spawned a successful franchise, with Lee and Buck returning for Frozen 2, after which she was appointed chief creative officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Despite the success of Frozen 2, and following her new role for Disney, Lee initially ruled herself out of a return to the Frozen franchise. Still, according to reports from IndieWire, the A Wrinkle in Time writer has stepped down as Disney Animation's chief creative officer to return exclusively to filmmaking and direct the next two Frozen sequels.

US filmmaker Ava DuVernay will receive the honorary Film & Beyond Award at the 30th edition of Geneva International Film Festival (Giff).

DuVernay will accept her award in-person at the event, where she will participate in a talk about her career.

The festival, which runs from November 1-10, 2024, is also playing a programme of DuVernay’s work.

Having worked extensively as a publicist in Hollywood, DuVernay directed her first feature This Is The Life, a documentary about the alternative hip hop MCs who came through the Good Life Cafe in Los Angeles, in 2008.

Levi Miller spoke with MovieWeb's Will Sayre about the new World War I action drama, Before Dawn. He also touched on his past work with A Wrinkle in Time and his future work with the highly anticipated film, Kraven the Hunter.

After leaving his familys sheep farm in the Australian outback, a young man joins his countrymen on the western front of World War I with hopes of helping expedite an end to the bloody conflict. But as war rages on, he is forced to grapple with the brutal realities of trench warfare, including a near-constant battle to keep himself alivewithout leaving another man behind. Before Dawn is in theaters and on digital July 19, 2024 from Well Go USA.

We spoke to Australian actor Levi Miller during the lead-up to the release of Before Dawn, a historically significant World War I film set in the land Down Under that sees Miller leading the powerful true story as a conflicted soldier struggling desperately to keep himself and his comrades alive. Miller has kept busy recently with bigger-budget projects as well, including the highly anticipated new superhero film Kraven the Hunter, which will see him playing a younger version of Aaron Taylor Johnson's titular role. Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hot-topic feature is set to be released in December of this year.

"I can't say too much about that production at this point, of course," Miller told MovieWeb. "But yeah... I've played a younger version before, but that's always a very interesting thing to step into because, you know, it's a balancing act."

Teyana Taylor had a breakout year as an actress last year, starring in “The Book of Clarence,” “White Men Can’t Jump,” and most notably her Film Independent Spirit Award-nominated performance in the brilliant “A Thousand and One.” But the R&b star is now making the leap to feature film director.

Taylor is set to make her feature directorial debut on a film called “Get Lite” that is now in development at Paramount Pictures, an individual with knowledge of the project told IndieWire. She’s cast Storm Reid in the lead role.

Reid is also producing the film through her production banner A Seed & Wings Productions, and she’ll be producing alongside “Black-ish” creator Kenya Barris via his Khalabo Ink Society. Taylor is executive producing.

Like recently announced cast member Kumail Nanjiani, Galifianakis’ role in the mystery-comedy series is currently kept under wraps. However, an individual with knowledge of the situation can confirm his character is “integral to the twist and turns of this season’s investigation.”

The three series leads remain Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez as true crime-obsessed neighbors that get caught up in real cases. Additional new faces in Season 4 include Eugene Levy, Eva Longoria and Molly Shannon. Meryl Streep, who first appeared in Season 3, will also reprise her role. The host of the 96th Academy Awards is planning to do a shot of Don Julio tequila during the show with his sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez.

But they might not be the only ones drinking at that moment. A source tells Variety that tequila shots will also be available for the star-studded audience of nominees and presenters. “There is supposed to be tequila at their seats,” the source said.

Not that alcohol isn’t available at the Oscars. There are several bars in the lobby areas of the theater and drinks are also available in the Rolex green room backstage.
