25 underappreciated films on Disney+ UK
Image
Disney+ UK is about more than Marvel and Star Wars stuff. Here’s a bunch of underappreciated films on the service.

Many of us subscribed to Disney+ to always have a bunch of Disney productions at hand.. You know, in case I simply need to watch The Lion King at 2am and can’t find my DVD in the dark.

But the streaming service offers so much more than just the well known favourites. There’s a whole sea of incredible films to discover – but with such extensive libraries, they can be hard to find. We’ve done our best to highlight 25 underrated films that you should give a chance to. This’ll be updated over time, too.

Here they are:

Prime Video's Adaptation of Fantasy Novel Series Gets Exciting Update (3 Years After Getting Scrapped at Netflix)
Image
Netflix was at one point developing a series adaptation of the children's fantasy novel series Wings of Fire, but the project wound up fizzling out in development hell. Another streamer came in to give the adaptation another shot, and it's just gotten an exciting update with its development

Per Variety, an update has been revealed that an animated series adaptation of Wings of Fire is now in the works at Prime Video. After it was first reported to be in the works in 2024, it's now been revealed that Aaron Waltke will serve as series showrunner, co-writer, and executive producer. Original Wings of Fire author Tui T. Sutherland is also co-writing the series with Waltke and will serve as an executive producer as well, alongside Marc Resteghini of Jack Tar Productions.

Waltke previously worked on Guillermo del Toro's Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia, which won him a Daytime Emmy Award for...

‘Fantastic Four: First Steps’: Why Marvel is facing same ‘woke’ allegations that doomed ‘Snow White’ and other high-profile Disney projects
Image
The Walt Disney Company has been around for more than 100 years, and during that century-plus the studio has developed a reputation for wholesome, all-ages entertainment. Because of that reputation, Disney is often an easy target when it dares to stray from a very narrow definition of "family-friendly."

It’s not uncommon for Hollywood studios to be attacked by conservatives for anything resembling diversity in race, gender, or sexuality. But many right-wing outlets have pushed Disney into the middle of the culture war even when its executives — including CEO Bob Iger — clearly want nothing to do with that.

Within the past week, The Fantastic Four: First Steps has drawn ire among social media commentators for revealing a female Silver Surfer (played by Emmy winner Julia Garner) in the latest trailer, which is being presented among some quarters as evidence of Mouse House's alleged “woke agenda.” If this all sounds familiar, that...

Ryan Coogler and His Proximity Banner Are Playing the Long Game
Image
The time it takes to produce a feature film can span studio heads, a pivot to streaming and a merger or two.

As original movies take longer and longer to work their way through the studio machinery, the pace of change at studios, from strategies and shifting priorities, has sped up. Even the most veteran filmmakers have been entrapped in that antagonistic push and pull.

Sinners, the latest from filmmaker Ryan Coogler, landed at Warner Bros. at the top of 2024. A year and some change later, is hitting theaters this weekend. As for how Coogler ended up anomalously pushing his movie through a post-pandemic, post-strikes entertainment industry in what amounts to land speed record timing, that’s a longer story.

Coogler’s path from Sundance Film Festival wunderkind to seasoned blockbuster filmmaker is well known. In a sentence: The indie debut Fruitvale Station led to a shot as resuscitating a...

25 Biggest Disney Box Office Bombs, Ranked
Image
Nothing destroys a film's momentum quite like bombing at the box office. While poorly received movies can still be successful should they gross a lot of money, even the most critically acclaimed film is considered a failure if it fails to make its money back upon release. Walt Disney's entertainment juggernaut is all too familiar with financially destitute films, as not every picture can be a winner.

Most know Walt Disney Studios for its load of successful Marvel, animated, and Star Wars movies, Disney's films are all over the list of the worst box office bombs of all time as well. From the well-known to the more forgotten, Disney has made its mark in the annals of most successful and least successful films. But some flopped so badly as to be considered the very bottom of the bottom.

2019 Sci-Fi Horror From Rings Writer Finds New Success on Streaming
Image
Big studios are always in competition with streaming services. However, the success some titles have on online platforms proves there is a way for all films to become successful, even when they're not big hits at the box office.

Netflix is one of the most open streaming services when it comes to its viewership data, releasing updated numbers every week. The reports shared by the giant streaming platform have often highlighted that big-budget productions are also popular online, but box office flops and titles with poor ratings get another chance as well. Per Tudum, the 2019 underrated sci-fi horror Don't Let Go found success on streaming, debuting in the Top 10 for the week between Feb. 17 and 23.

When Jenna Ortega Had A Major Crush On This U.S. President & Made Hilariously Bold Attempt To Get His Attention
Image
Did Jenna Ortega have a huge crush on Barack Obama? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Jenna Ortega has spent enough time around Hollywood A-listers to be unfazed by fame. But before she was the queen of Netflix’s Wednesday, she was just a kid with a major, major crush. And no, it wasn’t on a pop star or an actor—Ortega set her sights much higher.

Yep, little Ortega was head over heels for none other than Barack Obama. While most kids her age were obsessing over Disney Channel heartthrobs, she was mesmerized by the 44th President of the United States.

Obama took office when she was just six, and by the time he started his second term, she was fully in love. The American artist watched his inauguration like it was a Disney movie, completely in awe.

Netflix Users Are Obsessed With A Mind-Bending 2019 Sci-Fi Thriller
Image
We may receive a commission on purchases made from links.

Netflix is once again turning a former theatrical flop into a streaming hit. 2019's "Don't Let Go," which stars Oscar nominee David Oyelowo ("Selma") and Storm Reid ("A Wrinkle in Time"), has found its audience more than five years after it failed to catch on during its original release. This is an interesting case where success may well be better late than never.

"Don't Let Go" has been rising through Netflix's top 10 most-watched movies list as of late and is currently sitting at number four on the streamer's charts, per FlixPatrol. It's even trending above other Netflix originals such as "Kinda Pregnant" and "Honeymoon Crasher." Not bad for a movie with a $5 million budget that made only $5 million at the box office in late summer 2019. But that's the power of Netflix, which generates more revenue than the entire global box office combined.

Will Smith Proves He Was Always Wrong for 'The Matrix'
Image
Quick LinksWill Smith Gets His Chance to Play Neo... Sort OfKeanu Reeves Was the Best Choice for 'The Matrix'

Nearly three decades ago, The Matrix made its mark on the science fiction genre, utilizing groundbreaking special effects and storytelling that had moral and philosophical depth. The modern sci-fi classic would also become a defining role for beloved actor Keanu Reeves, with his bullet dodging skills and surprise at learning Karate becoming integrated into '90s pop culture. Yet, the film franchise could have had a different famous face attached to the project, as infamously, Will Smith turned down the role to instead appear in the box office bomb Wild Wild West (at least he got that one catchy single out of it).

While the lore of Smith's disastrous career choice was not enough to derail his career, the actor appears to have recently reflected on the missed opportunity.

'John Carter' Was Supposed To Spawn a Sci-Fi Disney Franchise — And Its Sequel Plans Sounded Epic
Image
When it comes to science fiction franchises, Disney doesn't have the greatest track record. The studio's Star Wars content has been heavily criticized for a decade now, and other projects like Tomorrowland, A Wrinkle in Time, and the Tronseries never made much of a dent or garnered a big fanbase. However, perhaps the biggest sci-fi tragedy in Disney's entire catalog is 2012's John Carter, which adapted the long-beloved works of Edgar Rice Burroughs to the big screen. With Taylor Kitsch playing the leading John Carter of Mars, the film was supposed to spawn a trilogy that would have continued these intergalactic adventures. Unfortunately, poor marketing killed John Carter before it had the chance to jump too high off the ground — but what would the sequels have been like? From what we can tell, they would have been magnificent.

One Of The Most Ambitious Sci-Fi Movies Of The Decade Finds An Audience On Prime Video
Image
Throughout the 2010s, and lingering into the 2020s, massive, corporate-backed I.P. has dominated both the domestic box office and the American journalistic conversation about cinema in general. We live in a world where reporters, when they had an opportunity to sit down with Martin Scorsese to discuss new masterworks like "The Silence" or "The Wolf of Wall Street," decided to ask him about Captain America and his place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Vocal subverters of the dominant paradigm repeatedly yawped that Hollywood should devote more time and resources to new ideas. After all, why be the next "Star Wars" when you can be the first of something different? Where, oh where were the original sci-fi/fantasy ideas?

But then, when an ambitious filmmaker tries to make something new and striking for a broad cinematic audience, it generally tanks. It seemed that audiences were more eager to attach themselves to...

Everything We Know About ‘Stranger Things’ Season 5 So Far
Image
Updated with the latest: Stranger Things Season 5 has officially wrapped production. The end is closer than originally thought for Netflix tentpole from the Duffer Brothers.

The fifth and final season of the show has been in the works ever since Part 2 of Season 4 arrived in July 2022, with the writers room for the next season opening August that year. A pandemic delaying Season 4’s arrival and then dual Hollywood strikes pushed Season 5 further than originally planned.

Find everything we know about Stranger Things Season 5 below.

When will Stranger Things Season 5 come out?

As of November 6, 2024, Netflix revealed that the final installment of the show looks to a 2025 release window, not 2026 like previously thought with how long production takes.

Production officially wrapped in December 2024 after it had reached the halfway point in July. Production on the final season kicked off in January 2024.

Skeleton Crew: At Attin is just right for Star Wars
Image
When I saw the trailer for Skeleton Crew, my first thought when I saw the sprawling suburban environment was that this was not the Star Wars I know and love. In fact, the images drew an immediate link to Madeleine L'Engle's novel A Wrinkle in Time. Within that franchise, there is a city without individuality or creativity that bears some resemblance to Wim's neighborhood. Although the show looked fun, I wondered whether the personality of Star Wars could survive in such a place.

I figured the purpose of this safe, modern town was to draw contrast to the grungy, pirate-infested worlds the children would encounter later. Of course, this is partially true. However, upon viewing the first episode, I was struck by how well the Star Wars aesthetic was still able to thrive within more sterile environments.

This isn't the first time Star Wars has explored cleaner worlds. Leia...

Ava DuVernay Makes Dig At Donald Trump’s Re-Election; Dives Into Limited ‘Origin’ Release: “This Is A Difficult Film For Me” – Marrakech Film Festival
Image
Ava DuVernay has slammed Donald Trump’s re-election as U.S. president, in spite of a criminal charges against him, saying that black people arrested on smaller crimes land years of jail time.

She was speaking in a conversation event at the Marrakech film festival, moderated by Rosalie Varda, daughter of late iconic filmmaker Agnès Varda, who is friend of the Selma, 13th and A Wrinkle in Time director and producer.

The subject of Trump’s re-election arose in a discussion on DuVernay’s Netflix-backed 2016 documentary 13th, exploring racial injustice in the U.S. penal system, and the fact its prisons are disproportionately filled with African-Americans.

“The idea of mass incarceration of criminality, and how black and brown people in certain parts of the world are considered inherently criminal, that’s what it is about. It’s more about the idea of why do we believe some people have...

Marvel Star Joins Cast Of YA Fantasy Romance Movie Drawing Twilight Comparisons
Image
A Marvel star has been cast, along with six other actors, in the upcoming movie adaptation of Shiver, a young adult fantasy romance novel that has drawn comparisons to Twilight. The paranormal romance in the Twilight book series written by Stephanie Meyer became a popular culture phenomenon, which led to movie adaptations starring Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson, and Taylor Lautner. The series' fantastical world and the love triangle between Bella Swan, Edward Cullen, and Jacob Black continues to resonate years later.

Shiver was first published in 2009 and was followed by three sequels in The Wolves of Mercy Falls series. The first bestselling novel written by Maggie Stiefvater follows a young woman named Grace who is saved from a pack of wolves by a yellow-eyed wolf when she is a child. Years later, Grace encounters a young man named Sam who has the same yellow eyes, as a love story reminiscent...

Zendaya Took 300 Kids To Watch ‘Black Panther’ In The Theatres

Zendaya? Yeah, she’s the queen of generosity. In 2018, the Greatest Showman star went full superhero mode by taking 300 kids from her hometown of Oakland to see Black Panther. No, this wasn’t some VIP event—this was a genuine love letter to her community. Zendaya tweeted, “Wakanda forever…Oakland forever,” as she celebrated her hometown squad because nothing screams “community hero” like showing up for the next generation.

And this wasn’t a one-and-done moment. Zendaya teased that she’d do it again for A Wrinkle in Time. The woman had a plan to keep the good vibes rolling.

But Zendaya wasn’t alone in this epic mission. Kids lost it at the Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta when they found out they’d be heading to the theater to see Black Panther as part of a lesson plan.

Storm Reid Not Returning for ‘Euphoria’ Season 3: ‘I’m So Glad That’s a Part of My Legacy’

Storm Reid will not be returning for “Euphoria” Season 3, the actor revealed.

“I’m very excited for Season 3,” Reid told Rotten Tomatoes on the Governors Awards red carpet. “Unfortunately, Gia’s not returning to the third season, but I am so so indebted to the cast and the crew of that show, to HBO. ‘Euphoria’s’ a really special thing and I’m so glad that that’s a part of my legacy and that I was a part of such a cultural phenomenon … I can’t wait to see what Season 3 has in store.”

HBO declined to comment.

Reid starred as Gia, the younger sister of Zendaya’s Rue, in the first two seasons of “Euphoria,” which premiered in June 2019 and finished airing Season 2 in February 2022.

Production on Season 3 of “Euphoria” is set to begin in January. “We are shooting the season. I have read the scripts. We’re happy.

Camazotz Explained: New Stranger Things Season 5 Villain Tease
Image
The episode titles for Stranger Things season 5 have been unveiled, and tease a potential new villain dubbed Camazotz. The Duffers Brothers have referenced countless movies, shows and books in Stranger Things over the years, from Aliens to It and A Nightmare on Elm Street. Perhaps the strongest influence (outside of Stephen King anyway) is Dungeons & Dragons. The franchise's young heroes are big fans of the fantasy roleplaying game and have labeled the various creatures they've encountered in The Upside Down after D&d monsters.

This includes the Demogorgon or season 4's big bad Vecna (Jamie Campbell Bower). The final season will likely maintain this tradition, though story details are still kept under lock and key. Netflix recently dropped the episode titles for the upcoming Stranger Things season 5, with episode one dubbed "The Crawl" and the final episode titled The Rightside Up," an inversion of season 1's finale "The Upside Down.

Stranger Things reveals episode titles for final season, confirms time jump

As is tradition, Netflix has dropped a teaser for the upcoming new season of Stranger Things, revealing the titles for the next batch of episodes. Watch it above!

As for those episode titles, they are:

“The Crawl”“The Vanishing Of…”“The Turnbow Trap”“Sorcerer”“Shock Jock”“Escape From Camazotz”“The Bridge”“The Rightside Up”

The next season of Stranger Things, the show's fifth, is also its last. What do these titles tell us about the final visit to Hawkins, Indiana? Sleuths on Reddit are already coming up with theories.

"The Crawl": We've known about this title for a while. My best guess is that it's a play on the idea of a dungeon crawl, games of Dungeons & Dragons having been important to the characters on Stranger Things for years. If you'll remember, the fourth season ended with the ooky-spooky Upside Down dimension leaking into our reality, so real...

Stranger Things Season 5: Netflix teases episode titles and 2025 release date
Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Natalia Dyer, Caleb McLaughlin, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Charlie Heaton, Noah Schnapp, and Gaten Matarazzo in Stranger Things (2016)
Netflix has officially announced that the fifth and final season of Stranger Things will premiere in 2025.

This confirmation was made on November 6, 2024, during the annual Stranger Things Day commemorating the in-universe date when Will Byers vanished into the Upside Down.

In celebration of this announcement, Netflix released a teaser video unveiling the titles of the upcoming season’s eight episodes: The Crawl, The Vanishing of…, The Turnbow Trap, Sorcerer, Shock Jock, Escape From Camazotz, The Bridge, and The Rightside Up.

Notably, the second episode’s title, The Vanishing of…, is partially redacted, evoking the series’ inaugural episode, The Vanishing of Will Byers.

This has led to speculation about which character might disappear in the final season.

The final episode, titled The Rightside Up, appears to be a deliberate inversion of the Season 1 finale, The Upside Down, suggesting a potential resolution to the series’ central conflict.

In the fall of 1987, one last adventure begins.

‘Stranger Things 5’ Confirms 2025 Release; Final Season Episode Titles Include ‘The Rightside Up’ For the Finale
Image
The fifth and final season of “Stranger Things” will debut in 2025, Netflix announced on Wednesday. To celebrate Nov. 6, 1983, a.k.a. “Stranger Things Day” — the day Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) was abducted into the Upside Down — the streamer also released a video revealing the titles for the final eight episodes, which will conclude the supernatural story of Hawkins, Indiana.

The episode titles are “The Crawl,” “The Vanishing of…,” “The Turnbow Trap,” “Sorcerer,” “Shock Jock,” “Escape From Camazotz,” “The Bridge,” and “The Rightside Up.”

Some of these titles allude to earlier episodes: “The Vanishing of…” — revealed with the name fully obscured — invokes the series premiere “The Vanishing of Will Byers.” Fans online have already speculated that the new abductee could be Holly Wheeler, the younger sister of Mike (Finn Wolfhard) who was reportedly recast with “Evil Dead Rise” actor Nell Fisher, but Netflix has not officially confirmed.

Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel Was Criticized Before Release? Here’s What Stirred Controversy
Image
Why did Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel face criticism? (Photo Credit – Instagram)

Remember when Captain Marvel faced a wave of criticism even before hitting the big screen? Yeah, that controversy was wild. Brie Larson’s take on the iconic superhero sparked a massive backlash, and the movie hadn’t even premiered yet. One early reviewer labeled it “a complete disaster,” while another ranted about “Sjw nonsense,” using the now-infamous pejorative “social justice warrior.” But what stirred the pot? Let’s dive in.

Before the Release: The Build-Up of the Backlash

Over a month before its release, Captain Marvel was under fire from internet trolls. Brie Larson, who starred as the superhero made up headlines with her outspoken views on Hollywood’s diversity issues. She called for the movie to be “a big feminist movie” and pushed for more inclusive media coverage, vowing to seek out underrepresented journalists. Those statements? Troll fuel.

25 Biggest Box Office Bombs Of All Time
Image
While not every movie can be a financial hit, the biggest box office bombs of all time prove that some projects can take down careers, genres, and even studios. While movie studios do everything possible to ensure they take as few risks as possible, investing in a film is always a gamble. The common criticism that Hollywood only produces reboots, sequels, remakes, and spinoffs is not without justification. This claim comes from the fact that, for studios, an intellectual property with proven potential and a built-in fanbase will always be more appealing than an unknown, original prospect.

However, this approach does not always bear fruit. The box office failure of superhero movies in 2023 shows that no genre is going to be a surefire hit forever. While superhero movies were once the biggest earner, they have now made for some costly losses. This can be the same for big ambitious productions that spiral out of control,...

Frozen 3 & 4 Get Major Production Update As Original Director Steps Down As Disney Animation Boss
Image
Filmmaker Jennifer Lee will make a surprise return to the franchise to direct Frozen 3 & 4. Lee rose to prominence as an animation director in 2013 with her feature film debut Frozen, which she wrote and co-directed with long-term Disney animator Chris Buck. The movie was a box office success, grossing over $1.28 billion globally against a production budget of $150 million. The film won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature and spawned a successful franchise, with Lee and Buck returning for Frozen 2, after which she was appointed chief creative officer for Walt Disney Animation Studios.

Despite the success of Frozen 2, and following her new role for Disney, Lee initially ruled herself out of a return to the Frozen franchise. Still, according to reports from IndieWire, the A Wrinkle in Time writer has stepped down as Disney Animation's chief creative officer to return exclusively to filmmaking and direct the next two Frozen sequels.

Inside Out 2: Why Mindy Kaling & Bill Hader Were Recast In The Sequel (Despite Having A "Great Time Working On Inside Out")
Image
Despite their memorable roles in the original film, Mindy Kaling and Bill Hader did not return for Inside Out 2 as Disgust and Fear. These characters were two of Inside Out's core emotions, who all live in the head of a young girl named Riley. Released in 2015, the film was both a critical and commercial hit, grossing over $859 million worldwide (via Box Office Mojo). Unsurprisingly, this led to a 2024 sequel, which was an even bigger success. Inside Out 2 is Pixar's highest-grossing movie thus far, currently having earned almost $1.65 billion.

A huge reason for the franchise's success is its skillful actors, and the Inside Out cast is stacked with A-list stars, including Kaling and Hader. Kaling broke out playing Kelly Kapoor in the ensemble cast of The Office, and has gone on to create several hit TV shows, including The Mindy Project, which she also starred in. Hader...

Image
We spoke to Australian actor Levi Miller during the lead-up to the release of Before Dawn, a historically significant World War I film set in the land Down Under that sees Miller leading the powerful true story as a conflicted soldier struggling desperately to keep himself and his comrades alive. Set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, the hot-topic feature is set to be released in December of this year.

"I can't say too much about that production at this point, of course," Miller told MovieWeb. "But yeah... I've played a younger version before, but that's always a very interesting thing to step into because, you know, it's a balancing act."

[Review] The Power of Russell Crowe Compels You in Possession Horror The Exorcism
Image
Joshua John Miller’s possession horror The Exorcism hits theatres this weekend, giving us all another dose of Religious Russell Crowe (The Nice Guys). This go-around, Crowe plays struggling actor Anthony MIller, recovering from a decade of bad press and hard living, desperate for his newest picture (an exorcism movie) to bring him back into the light. Its scares are pretty boilerplate, but it’s got a great concept and a self-aware understanding of what kind of movie it is which makes for some great moments of meta horror. Of course, above all else, it stars Russell Crowe which, for most of us, is reason alone to buy a ticket.

We’re all still living in the post-glow of Julius Avery’s surprise hit The Pope’s Exorcist. An immediate cultural sensation (if you’re consuming the right culture), Russell Crowe gave us the performance of the year as Father Gabriel Amorth,...

Origin's True Story & Isabel Wilkerson's Real Life Explained
Image
Origin, directed by Ava DuVernay, explores Isabel Wilkerson's journey to write Caste. The film blends history with personal narrative to depict Wilkerson's experiences and challenges while weaving together her book. Despite some fictionalized elements, Origin captures the essence of Wilkerson's life and work.

BAFTA Award-winning writer-director Ava DuVernay's first feature-length film since 2018, Origin is a biographical drama that centers on Isabel Wilkerson (Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor), a real-life author and journalist who is perhaps best-known for writing The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration. Although DuVernay's last feature, A Wrinkle in Time, saw the filmmaker adapting a best-selling fantasy novel, DuVernay is no stranger to translating someone's life story to the silver screen. Selma, the director's 2014 Golden Globe and Oscar-nominated biopic about Martin Luther King Jr., was a breakout film.

On the television side of things, Ava Duvernay has helmed acclaimed projects that are similarly rooted in true stories,...

Image
Jimmy Kimmel is ready to drink up at the Oscars.

The host of the 96th Academy Awards is planning to do a shot of Don Julio tequila during the show with his sidekick Guillermo Rodriguez.

But they might not be the only ones drinking at that moment. A source tells Variety that tequila shots will also be available for the star-studded audience of nominees and presenters. “There is supposed to be tequila at their seats,” the source said.

Not that alcohol isn’t available at the Oscars. There are several bars in the lobby areas of the theater and drinks are also available in the Rolex green room backstage.

Guillermo often offers and does shots with celebs, including Charlize Theron, Amy Adams, Channing Tatum, Eddie Redmayne, Chris Pratt and Ke Huy Quan, on the Oscar red carpet.

Netflix and Disney’s Film Divisions Are Moving in Different Directions
Image
It isn’t every week that two of the biggest jobs in film are filled within a matter of days, but that was the case last week. On February 26, Disney’s live-action president of Walt Disney Studios Motion Picture Production Sean Bailey exited, making way for Searchlight’s David Greenbaum to take the top job. Two days later on Feb. 28, Rideback’s Dan Lin was tapped to take Scott Stuber’s open seat atop Netflix’s film division.

Greenbaum made his bones on prestige indie films and original, auteur-driven stories. He’s now taking the job at a company that has spent the last 15 years mining IP and playing the hits. Lin is a franchise builder now stepping into an environment known for chasing big prestige swings.

It appears Disney and Netflix are heading in opposite directions. One agent who spoke with IndieWire called it a role-reversal between Disney and Netflix; at one point,...
