'Million Dollar Baby' movie with Hilary Swank and Clint Eastwood. 'Million Dollar Baby' movie: Clint Eastwood contrived, overlong drama made (barely) watchable by first-rate central performance Fresh off the enthusiastically received – and insincere – Mystic River, Clint Eastwood went on to tackle the ups and downs of the boxing world in the 2004 melo Million Dollar Baby. Despite the cheery title, this is not the usual Rocky-esque rags-to-riches story of the determined underdog who inevitably becomes a super-topdog once she (in this case it's a “she”) puts on her gloves, jumps into the boxing ring, and starts using other women as punching bags. That's because about two-thirds into the film, Million Dollar Baby takes a radical turn toward tragedy that is as unexpected as everything else on screen is painfully predictable. In fact, once the dust is settled, even that last third quickly derails into the same sentimental mush Eastwood and...

Reed Richards (Miles Teller) introduces Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) to his fellow inter-dimensional travelers Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan) and Victor Domashev (Toby Kebbell) in the first clip for Fantastic Four. The scene takes place as they all make a history-breaking journey to an alternate universe, where they will all get their own unique super powers. Spiro chief Eitan Mansuri will be in Toronto with final draft of Lavie’s The Current Love Of My Life.
Talya Lavie’s second feature The Current Love Of My Life, a New York-set comedy in which secular and orthodox worlds collide, is moving towards a 2016 shoot, according to producer Eitan Mansuri of Tel Aviv’s Spiro Films.
Lavie’s debut Zero Motivation, which captured the ennui of a group of female army recruits, became the best-performing Israeli film at the local box office when it was released last year.
“It’s got the backing of the Israel Film Fund and now we’re trying to figure out whether it makes sense to go with North American partners for the financing or build a European co-production,” Mansuri said of Lavie’s new project.

Father and son relationships can be complicated, and that's certainly the case for Tony and Senior on NCIS. Robert Wagner returns as Anthony Dinozzo, Sr., in "The Artful Dodger," and his surprise visit just so happens to come at the exact time that his knowledge and contacts in the black market art world are needed for a murder case.
As much as I love to see Senior, it feels like every time he shows up, it's the same old cycle. Senior comes to visit, and he's the same Anthony as always. (Remember, Tony only found out that he didn't get on a flight for Thanksgiving after it had already landed.) Something happens, and he gets involved in the team's current case, a surefire way to make the investigation more intriguing. Tony wants him gone, the others just find him amusing and Tony's childhood (and comments made before his father first...

Presented by Alexander Armstrong and Rochelle Humes, who were both doing the best with what scraps they had, we were confronted with a judging panel that comprised of Rufus Hound, Mica Paris, Dave Stewart and Leo Green. And they had absolutely no sway at all.

Yet another film is aiming to be rebooted as a TV series for next Fall. NBC is reportedly planning a small screen adaptation of the 2000 lo-fi time travel thriller "Frequency" which starred Dennis Quaid and Jim Caviezel.

A Good Marriage is from the same year, with Stephen King adapting his own novella, found in the collection Full Dark, No Stars, for the screen, something he's done rarely and not recently. Jim Mickle's "Cold In July" isn't just set in Texas, it sweats Texas. Taking place in the 1980s, the filmmaker has great fun with the era, embracing everything from the hairstyles to the loud fashion, and he infuses it with a distinctive swagger that makes his neon slicked noir more than just a genre exercise. And some of that unique texture also comes from the film's soundtrack, and today we have two tracks to give you a flavor of what "Cold In July" serves up. Starring Michael C. Hall, Don Johnson, Sam Shepard and Vinessa Shaw, the film follows an ordinary man who, in the process of defending his home from a break in, shoots and kills the intruder. But things only get more complicated when the burglar's father, an fearsome ex-con, comes looking for vengeance. And Jeff Grace's synth soaked score, highlighted in "Father And Son" below,...

Father and son cancer survivors Dave and Connor O'Leary won the 24th season of "The Amazing Race" on Sunday. This all-star edition of the CBS staple brought together 11 teams from previous seasons that had been thwarted in their previous bids for the million dollar prize. In the case of these newly crowned champs, they had to bow out of Season 22 after Dave tore his achilles tendon. They had been a strong team then, winning two of the first five legs. As Dave tells us during our webcam chat (watch below), he had just finished a year of physical therapy when the call came to be in this new season. -Break- What did you think of this season of 'The Amazing Race'? Dish the show and all the teams here! In our candid conversation, Connor related the highs of the race -- their time in Sri Lanka and winning...

New York (AP) — Kiss made up, but its music went unheard. Nirvana used four women rockers to sing Kurt Cobain's songs. And Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band — predictably — turned its honor into a marathon. The three acts were ushered into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Thursday in a colorful induction ceremony at Brooklyn's Barclays Center. They were joined by the blue-eyed soul duo Hall & Oates, British rocker Peter Gabriel, 1970s folkie Cat Stevens and the absent Linda Ronstadt. Nirvana was the emotional centerpiece. The trio rooted in the Seattle-area punk rock scene was voted into the hall in its first year of eligibility. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" hit like a thunderclap upon its 1991 release, but the band was done after Kurt Cobain committed suicide 20 years ago this month. "Nirvana fans walk up to me every day and say thank you for the music," said Krist Novoselic,...

While you predicted that cowboys Cord and Jet would win this sixth leg of "The Amazing Race," they were pipped at the finish by Leo and Jamal, who you had coming in second. This non-elimination leg took place in Sri Lanka with the brothers finishing the log hauling detour first but being edged out at the finish line by the cousins who scored the faster taxi. Although you predicted this to be the last leg for engaged couple John and Jessica, they impressed with their focus and finished third. -Break- Father and son cancer survivors Dave and Connor slid from first to fourth while Brendon and Rachel managed a fifth place finish despite Rachel making a rookie mistake at the Roadblock and not reading the clue correctly. Harlem Globetrotters Flight Time and Big Easy were forced to do the more difficult Detour but still rallied to finish sixth. It was...

Interview Simon Brew 7 Feb 2014 - 07:17
Simon talks to the director of Mr Peabody & Sherman about child actors, straight to video sequels, and animation vs live action
Since he co-directed The Lion King, Rob Minkoff hasn't made a full-on animated film since. He mixed animation with live action in a pair of Stuart Little movies (setting off a bit of a trend there), and went on to tackle The Haunted Mansion, The Forbidden Kingdom, and Flypaper amongst others.
Mr Peabody & Sherman brings him back to animation though, and he spared us some time to chat about. What's more, he talked too about the time he was offered the director's chair on Who Framed Roger Rabbit 2. Here's how our chat went...
If I've got this right, then this one's been on your plate for a decade, if not more than that. At one stage it was said to have a live action element to it.

Hanif Kureishi's muse has long been transgression: dazzling early success was followed by a sex-and-drugs phase, family falling-out and a lacerating novel about marital breakdown. Now, with The Last Word, has he finally pinned down who he really is?
The first time I met Hanif Kureishi it was the mid-80s, and we talked about writing fiction for Faber and Faber whose list I was directing. Kureishi came into my office like a rock star and I remember thinking that he did not seem in need of a career move. He was already riding high on the international success of his screenplay, My Beautiful Laundrette.
In fact, Kureishi was cannily pondering his next step. He was on the lookout for a means of self-expression that might sustain a way of life and over which he could have some control. Movies, he said, were chancy, a gold-rush business. There was...

As though it wasn't enough that the God of all cricketing activities Sachin Tendulkar graced the music release of Adhyayan Suman's film Heartless on Wednesday evening, Sachin gave the young actor a gift he is unlikely to ever forget. An autographed bat which has driven Adhyayan... well, batty. Says the amused and enthralled papa Shekhar Suman, "Addy (Adhyayan) keeps kissing the bat every ten minutes. He just can't put it down. Very honestly Sachin's presence at our music release was an event that we cannot hope to better. For me no promotion no event can get bigger than this. It was Sachin's first public event after being conferred with the Bharat Ratna." Father and son Suman broke into an emotional spirited song 'Thank you, Brother' for Sachin at the end of the evening. Adds Adhyayan, "I idolize only two people in my life, my dad and Sachin Tendulkar. I...

With Nebraska, director Alexander Payne returns to his home state of Nebraska to gracefully examine the lives of aging Midwesterners. Lensed in nostalgic black-and-white, Payne’s new film is anchored by an epic, awards-worthy performance by 7-year old Bruce Dern (crowned Best Actor at Cannes), but it’s not the unstable crazed Dern that made the actor a star in the ‘70s with films like Black Sunday, Tattoo and Coming Home. Dern’s Woody Grant (a role offered to Gene Hackman to unsuccessfully lure him out of retirement) doesn’t say a lot in Nebraska nor does his expression change much. It’s a role that forces him to skate by on a Hollywood veteran’s charisma and gravity and presence, something tough for any actor to do, but Dern pulls it off in spectacular form, turning this deceptively slight film into one of the year’s best.

‘Story of Father and Son’ (父與子)
Written by Ching Gong
Directed by Ng Wui

The further away we are from a given time period, the easier it becomes to sharpen our focus on what is being said in their films. There is a hyper-awareness that comes from the inspection of anything that isn’t directly (and easily) related to you. The defensive shields are down and the viewpoint becomes increasingly historical as time passes. That’s not to say objective criticism (an oxymoron) or objective observation is possible, just that the viewpoint is different. This logic can extend even further when you’re inspecting something from a distant culture–yes, this is the right time to shudder at the use of such barren words as inspect or logic. While the subtlety and arcanum of a culture may be lost on foreign and future gazers, a film’s ideological...

Lee Daniels tries very hard to become the next Steven Spielberg with The Butler, a 132-minute heartfelt, epic paean to the Civil Rights struggles of black Americans in the 20th century. The result is a film that is indeed convincingly earnest, yet intermittently clumsy in its attempt to shoehorn too much history into a family tale of survival, dysfunction, alcoholism, adultery, rebellion, and disco dancing -- or vice versa.
While consistently intelligent, it's at times a bit crass, wearing its integrity on its sleeve. Yes, inarguably hard-hitting and appropriately horrific, the movie is also exploitative with its endless, often jarring parade of star cameos. I mean, Robin Williams as Dwight D. Eisenhower? Now really.
The wanting-to-have-it-all screenplay by Danny Strong is a fictional takeoff 'inspired' by a 2008 article in The Washington Post: "A Butler Well Served by This Election." The piece, scribed by Wil Haywood upon Obama's election, focused on...

Mohsen Makhmalbaf calmly announces early in The Gardener that he does not belong to any religion, and is instead an agnostic filmmaker. Now in his mid-50s, the Iranian former fundamentalist—long since disillusioned, even living in exile since Ahmadinejad assumed power—has come to film the gardens within the world's center for the Bahá'í faith, located in Haifa, Israel. His embittered adult son, Maysam, also a filmmaker, accompanies him while declaring that religion has caused humanity nothing but trouble. Father and son strike a deal: Each filmmaker will record the other, as Mohsen seeks to capture the good in this place and Maysam the bad. Both men go on to meet believers who explain how the Bahá'í (the largest religious minority in Iran ...

Writer-director Paul Andrew Williams's Unfinished Song is a full-frontal attack on its audience's tear ducts. Shamelessly manipulative, it's a highly effective if not very good film, its success entirely due to the talents of its cast. They bring heart to a script that is unabashedly about pushing buttons. Vanessa Redgrave plays Marion, an elderly woman fighting cancer as her gruff husband, Arthur (Terence Stamp), and adoring son, James (Christopher Eccleston), struggle to come to terms with her impending death. Father and son have an icy relationship that pains her. But all is not gloom. Marion sings in a multiculti choir of senior citizens rendered cutesy in that time-honored silver-screen way; they're both harmlessly raunchy and puppy-dog lovable. Their earnest, unlucky-in-lo...
