Twelve years after being captured and placed in cryogenic sleep, Selene () awakens in an Antigen laboratory to find that Vampire and Lycan species have been almost eradicated and that she has been the subject of research scientist Dr Jacob Lane (Stephen Rea) and his attempt to find an antidote for the "infection". She also discovers that she and Michael (Scott Speedman) have a 12-year-old hybrid daughter (India Eisley) (referred to in the movie only as "Subject 2" but in the credits as "Eve"). Aided by fellow vampire David (Theo James) and the help of Detective Sebastian (Michael Ealy), Selene must stop the creation of a new, more powerful Lycan breed, while protecting her daughter from falling into their hands.
Awakening is the fourth movie released in the Underworld series, preceded by Inframundo (2003) (2003), Inframundo: Evolución (2006) (2006) and Inframundo 3 - La rebelión de los Lycans (2009) (2009), and followed by Inframundo: Guerras de sangre (2016) (2017). Underworld: Awakening was filmed from a screenplay written by Len Wiseman, John Hlavin, J. Michael Straczynski, and Allison Burnet, based on characters created for the first movie in the Underworld franchise by American screenwriters Kevin Grevioux, Danny McBride, and Len Wiseman. In terms of story chronology, however, Awakenings follows Evolution, while Rise of the Lycans precedes the first, second, fourth and fifth movies in the series. Thus, the correct chronological order is: Rise of the Lycans, Underworld, Evolution, Awakening, and finally Blood Wars.
Awakening begins six months after Evolution ends, showing how humans discovered the existence of both Vampires and Lycans and began a war to "purge" both species. To escape extermination, Selene and Michael tried to escape the city, but Michael was shot with a silver grenade and they were both hit with an underwater bomb and taken prisoner. The movie then jumps 12 years into the future.
Viewers who have seen all four movies do recommend seeing Underworld and Evolution prior to watching Awakening. There is an introduction by Selene (Kate Beckinsale) at the beginning of Awakening that briefly summarizes the backstory of the first two movies, but here's all that is given: The Vampire and Lycan clans had been at war for centuries before I was born, their endless conflict hidden from the human world. I was turned by a vampire and given the strength to avenge my family against the Lycans, and I was good at it. Then I found Michael Corvin (Scott Speedman), a human that was turned to neither Vampire nor Lycan but a hybrid of the two, and everything changed. Allies turned enemies, and the vampire elders I had protected for over six centuries now wanted me dead. We retaliated, killed the elders, and for a brief moment of time we were safe. But then, a new darkness arose. It's the barest of explanations and does not give any information as to why the Vampires and Lycans were at war, where they came from in the first place, how Selene became a vampire, why she needed to revenge her family, why the elders wanted Selene dead, how Michael and Selene met, how Michael became a hybrid, and so forth. Awakening can be watched without knowing the answers to these questions, but the storyline will likely seem superficial.
The story of how Michael became a hybrid is the subject of the first two Underworld movies. The story is that Alexander Covinus, a Hungarian warlord in the 5th century, had a rare blood abnormality that morphed in his bloodstream after his village was ravaged by a plague, giving him superhuman strength and immortality. Alexander then fathered three sons: Marcus (who was bitten by a bat and became the first vampire) and William (who was bitten by a wolf and became the first Lycan). The third son grew up human but still possessed the immortality trait, which was subsequently passed down through his bloodline, ending in the birth of another human, Michael Corvin. However, in Underworld, Michael was bitten by a Lycan named Lucian and turned into a werewolf. Near the end of the movie, after Selene was given the gift of drinking Alexander's blood, she bit Michael to keep him from dying. The Lycan blood coupled with Selene's blood worked together to turn Michael into a hybrid species, more than either Lycan or Vampire alone.
Selene was a third generation Vampire, having been turned by Victor, who was sired by Marcus, child of Alexander Corvinus. It is shown throughout the films that Vampires and Lycans with closest lineage to Alexander had the strongest powers, which is why elders (second generation vampires to Marcus) are held with such high regard. Alexander had directly shared his blood with Selene before dying, potentially making her just as strong as Marcus or William. Selene would also be more logical about survival as she would have centuries of experience warring Lycans in her job as a Death-Dealer, while the other vampires seen in this film were largely inexperienced fighters and, instead, were spending their time running and hiding.
They want to harvest her genetic material in order to create a vaccine that will make them immune to the effects of silver.
Lane uses fentanyl when he tries to (unsuccessfully) put Selene back to sleep after her escape from the cryochamber. He uses propofol to maintain Eve's anesthesia when they have to suddenly transport her. Both fentanyl and propofol are real drugs. Fentanyl is an opioid used as an analgesia (pain reliever) and anesthesia. Propofol is a short-acting hypnotic used to induce and maintain general anesthesia.
David explains to Selene that the surviving Lycans have been hiding underground, rarely showing themselves above ground, so something must be riling them. At first, Selene thinks it might be Michael, but it readily becomes apparent that they're after Eve. Three possible explanations that have been offered by viewers include (1) the Lycans could sense something different about her, or (2) they were ordered to find and capture her by the ruling Lycans. (3) they were starving and feral and simply attacked anyone who approached.
Because Subject 2 (Selene's daughter) wasn't of use to them until she hit puberty. At one point, Eve explains to Selene that she heard "them" talking outside her door, saying that, since she was no longer a child, the wait was over. She would be dead soon and her own mother would never know she existed. In another scene, Lane tells Quint that subject 2's estrogen levels had to get higher and her menses had to hold steady before her DNA could be harvested for cloning. The assumption is that they needed to hold on to Selene for her DNA until such time as her daughter would become usable. Keeping both Selene and Michael in cold storage would assure them the opportunity of creating another hybrid should Subject 2 prove unsatisfactory.
Although pregnancy was not mentioned at the end of Evolution, Selene and Michael did have an intimate love scene in that movie. According to the opening scenes in Awakening, six more months passed since the events in Evolution, giving Selene and Michael enough time to conceive a child. Bonus material on the DVD confirms that Selene was already pregnant when she was captured. Whether or not Selene carried the child to term and delivered her while in cryosleep is not addressed. The more likely scenario is that Eve was removed from Selene's body while still a fetus, maybe even an embryo, and raised in a test tube, not an impossibility in a laboratory that specializes in genetic engineering.
In the Underworld universe, when one vampire drinks blood from another vampire, the first vampire also gains the second vampire's memories. Selene wanted to gain Eve's memories to determine whether or not she was telling the truth about her origin as well as to see what she might know about Michael.
Eve was attacked by the Lycans in the van while David and Selene were making their getaway. When it became apparent that Eve wasn't healing, David took her to his coven to seek help from their "doctor", Olivia (Catlin Adams). David's father Thomas (Charles Dance), also the coven leader, orders Olivia give her blood, so Olivia cuts herself and allows Eve to drink, after which she begins to heal. Some reasons that viewers have offered to explain why Selene didn't do it first: (1) there was no time between the attack and their arrival at the coven, (2) Selene figured that, since her daughter was already in the Corvinus bloodline, drinking more of her (Selene's) blood would have no effect on Eve after a Lycan attack .
