- In 2003, in Sweetly, the teenager Summer goes to a teenage party on an isolated farm. She has just lost her three best friends that had been murdered and is not feeling well. The police arrive to stop the party since there is a serial-killer on the loose, but Summer is alone in the bathroom at the barn and is killed by the murderer. Twenty years later, her parents still grieve her loss, and they go to the place with her sister Lucy where there is a memorial. Lucy sees a flash in the barn and finds a strange device with the date 16 April 2003, the day before Summer died. Soon she is brought back to 2003, and she learns that the device is a time machine. She befriends the nerd Quinn at the high-school and asks him to help her to repair the machine and return to 2023. Soon she also befriends Summer and questions whether she should advise her sister or not, since she will affect the future and she will not be born if Summer survives.—Claudio Carvalho, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
- On April 18, 2003, in the small town of Sweetly, Minnesota, high school senior Summer Field (Antonia Gentry) attends the senior class celebration Spring Fling in a relatively sad mood, as her close friends Emmy (Megan Best), Brian (Kataem O'Connor), and Val (Sydney Sabiston) were recently murdered by a serial killer dubbed the Sweetly Slasher. As Summer enter the Spring Fling venue, her lifelong friend Quinn (Griffin Gluck) tries to give her an envelope, but Summer brushes him off, and does the same when her recent ex-boyfriend Ethan (Samuel Braun) asks her to dance after he spills a drink on her (Ethan was pushing from behind by another person, and that is why he spilled the drink) While Summer is in a back bathroom (cleaning up her top), the police are shutting down the party and everyone is rushing out the front. A masked figure lunges at her with a knife, so she escapes out back towards a barn, where he takes her down.
Twenty-one years later, high school student and amateur inventor Lucy Field (Madison Bailey) feels largely invisible, as the town and her parents (father Gil (Michael Shanks) and mother Kendra (Rachael Crawford)) are fixated on the date of Summer's death, the town having been torn apart by the murders. Downtown has been left decrepit, people continue to talk about the unsolved murders, and Lucy accompanies her parents to the small shrine to the victims in front of the barn. On Apr 16th, 2003, the Sweetly Slasher went on a 3-day killing spree, killing 4 people including Summer (the first 2 victims were killed at a mall). The identity of the Slasher is still unknown after 20 years.
Lucy has applied for the 2024 NASA internship program and has been accepted for the same. Her science teacher Mr Fleming, also used to teach Summer. Under a floorboard in Summer's room, Lucy finds some threatening letters written by someone initialed "E", whom she believes is Ethan.
Noticing a light flash from a nearby hay barn, Lucy finds a time machine and accidentally travels back to the year 2003, two days before her sister Summer was murdered by the Slasher. Lucy realizes that she has traveled to the past when she runs to her school and finds Summer alive. Summer had just broken up with Ethan after dating him for 2 years and he was very disgruntled.
Disoriented by how not rundown Sweetly is, she goes to the high school to consult with her mentor, science teacher Mr. Fleming. Quinn overhears her asking about time travel, and insists it is too irresponsible to undertake. Quinn says that time travel can create paradoxes and ripple effects that can be devastating.
Shortly afterwards, when Quinn is swept up by a wave of students (led by Ethan) to be this year's victim of the senior prank (in which a chosen student is thrown in the nearby river), Lucy intervenes. She stops the group and sweeps Ethan onto his back. Quinn is initially resentful, but she soon confides in him that she accidentally came from the future via the time machine. Knowing he is good at physics; Lucy enlists his help in refueling it. Quinn is adamant that Lucy should not try to change the past, even if she knows that something bad is going to happen. The fuel they need is nuclear and Lucy's father works at a nuclear plant and has access. Lucy sees Summer flirting lightly with Quinn to get his help with her homework. Lucy also observes that Emmy and Summer have had a falling out.
When Quinn has to head out to his mall job, Lucy asks for a lift to her house, surprising him, as he did not realize the connection between Lucy and Summer. She is invited in under the guise of helping Summer with her chemistry homework. The house and her parents are very different-it is messy, her parents are easygoing, and Summer and her mother cook together daily. Later, the Slasher murders Val and Brian at the mall, but Lucy's attempt to intervene results in the murder of a security guard who had not originally died.
Summer eventually discovers the truth from Lucy and works with Lucy and Quinn to save Emmy from the Slasher. Lucy tells Summer about the threatening letters from Ethan indicating that he might be the Slasher. Since Emmy was successfully saved, Lucy now wants to save Summer as well. Lucy figures out that the letter was not from Ethan, but from Emmy, who is in love with Summer. Lucy tells Summer that gay marriage is legal in the future. Lucy reveals to Summer that she is the next on the Slasher list. Even though, after talking to her parents Lucy had realized that she was only conceived by her parents after Summer was killed.
At the same time, Lucy discovers that Quinn is in love with Summer, the letter that he had tried to give her being a confession of this. While Lucy and Quinn steal fuel for the time machine (with Lucy taking her dad's ID card, and at the facility they find that the Slasher had also taken a unit of the fuel), Summer attends the dance where she publicly confesses her love for Emmy. The Slasher attacks Summer in the barn, but Lucy and Quinn save her life.
The Slasher is revealed to be a future Quinn from an alternate time-line, having been driven insane by the rejection and bullying that he had endured. He had traveled back in time, seeking revenge on Summer and her friends, inadvertently creating Lucy as a result of the hole that Summer's death had left in their parents' lives. Lucy transports herself and the future Quinn back to 2024 where she electrocutes and stabs him to death.
Discovering that she does not exist in this new, better time-line, Lucy decides to return to 2003 to live her life in the past with Summer and Quinn (using the unused fuel stolen by the Slasher which he had inside his jacket), landing an internship with NASA similar to the one that she got in her original time-line. In her personal statement, Lucy displays a more optimistic outlook on life than she did originally.
