The Pick

George is forlorn after losing Susan. Now that she is out of the picture, he sees her as perfect. He acts like an idiot, moping around, giving up on life. Eventually, he goes to see a shrink, but the zipper on his coat gets caught. The scene is hilarious. Poor Jerry is in his car, next to a cab, when that gorgeous model sees him pick his nose. Following are some of the most incredible lines, especially concerning whether Moses picked his nose. Oh, and there is a meeting with Calvin Klein (yes the real one) where Kramer gets to strut his stuff. But in addition is picture taken of Elaine by Kramer which she puts on her Christmas card, sending it to numerous friends and relatives. But there is something she didn't notice. Great effort!

I've never picked my nose. It's gross but I wouldn't dump a girl because of that. Unless she's a dognutter.

Story and The Production Overview: A very fun enjoyable episode. Tons of shaningans going on to distract you.

Highlight: George being A C4... Jerry and Elaine's speech. I AM NOT AN ANIMAL!

Villian: George and Jerry's girl. She was too shallow and doesn't listen.

Girlfriend attractiveness level: 10 but she shallow.

What can be learned?: don't date shallow girls.

Verdict: an episode that I would pick.

"The Pick" blurs the lines between pop culture and high art, comedy and profound cultural commentary. Jerry's spoof on Shylock's famous speech from Act 3, Scene 1 of William Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice--"do we not bleed?" raises interesting questions about the portrayal of Jewishness in popular culture, especially as connected to the Jewish stereotype of a big nose. In fact, most of the subplots in the episode have some connection to the tension between Jewish identity and the experience of Anglo culture. What is comedic on the surface gains depth in literary context, making Shakespeare's text accessible to a broader audience and demonstrating how discourse about Jewishness and cultural stereotypes is alive and well in popular media. Although it's only about 10 seconds, I had to pause 3 or 4 times to get through George's ridiculous, hilarious speech to Susan about Louis and Mrs Pasteur. Alexander and Swedberg did well to get through it without "corpsing" (laughing), and it does cut away very quickly. Kramer's underwear modeling is also a scream, Richards' physical comedy skills stronger than ever. I haven't even mentioned the Christmas card subplot, Newman's scene-stealing 10 second guest spot, or the ruminations of George on Moses' hygiene in the ancient desert. This episode sustains a superb level of humor virtually throughout. Absurdly good, absurd... and also good.
