"The Condemned" was one of four episodes of the 1960s "Mission: Impossible" that were remade during the 1988-89 television season. (A strike by the Writer's Guild in Hollywood initially precluded new scripts from being written for the series "reboot," so the producers of the new series initially decided to re-use 13 scripts from the original version.) Ultimately, four scripts were recycled; besides this one, they were "The Killer," "The System," and "The Legacy." This episode had originally been broadcast January 28, 1968.

Errores
Barney says that he is now a widower, and that his late wife was Grant's mother. But if Grant's mother was either of the two women Barney romanced during the original series, Grant would be from seven to ten years younger than he is. However, it is possible Barney wasn't married to Grant's mother before his birth, or that Barney wasn't strictly faithful while away from home. It's also not stated when Grant was born, so he could be younger than Phil Morris.

Voice on Disc: Good morning, Jim. Three months ago, an Englishman named George Stanton was murdered in his home in Istanbul, where he was living in exile, apparently on the proceeds of his investments. A corrupt Turkish police officer, Lieutenant Yusef Hamidou, was rewarded with promotion to Captain and control of Istanbul's major prison for his prompt arrest of the alleged murderer. It was a particularly brutal crime. Stanton was shot in the face with a sawed-off shotgun. The Turkish courts have sentenced the alleged killer to death, but we believe he's innocent and that Hamidou himself was somehow involved with the crime. The condemned man is scheduled to be hanged at dawn three days from today in this prison. Your mission, Jim, should you choose to accept it, is to obtain the release of the condemned man and to bring the corrupt Captain Hamidou to justice. There is one more thing you must be told, Jim. The alleged killer is a past member of your team and an old friend. As always, should you or any of your IM Force be caught or killed, the Secretary will disavow any knowledge of your actions. This disc will self-destruct in five seconds. Good luck, Jim.

It's nice to see Barney...but...

"The Condemned" is a nice episode of "Mission: Impossible" (1988)....but it's also a retread of an episode first aired in 1968. Several of the early episodes of this series reboot featured old scripts...hoping fans wouldn't notice. Well, because of that, this one loses a point or two for lack of originality.

The show begins with Barney Collier (Greg Morris) is prison in Turkey (it's odd that they used a real country name here). It seems he's been set up and will be executed or remain in prison the rest of his life because he's accused of murder. Naturally Barney didn't do it, so the IM Force needs to help him escape, find out who was behind all this an make sure they're punished and figure out why...why set up Barney??

The episode is fine and enjoyable...just nothing new. So, while it's very nice to see old Barney it's just a sad retread.
