I still remember the commercials for the original Splatterhouse game for I believe the Turbo Graphix 16. It looked so cool because it was a horror based game, and I loved horror then as much as I do now. I was so sad that it did not come to any of the systems I owned at the time. However, this one came to the Sega Genesis and I did own that! I saw it for rent in Blockbuster and immediately picked it up for rental! In retrospect I am very happy that I did rent this game before buying as it is very short. It is also very difficult as the last couple of monsters you must face are a pain and a half and are tough as nails...even on normal difficulty (difficult and extreme being the other two settings).
The story has you as Rick going to a mansion to rescue your girlfriend. Rick gains superhuman abilities by wearing a mask, and it is this mask that is needed to tear through the strange creatures lurking on the mansion grounds and in the mansion itself. From the introduction, it seems Rick got away after the first game, but he kind of left his girlfriend behind. The masks torments him, telling him that it is his only chance. So Rick returns to find his beloved and dons the mask again to smash through the strange monsters, many of which look like insane experiments.
The game play is your standard move to the right and punch and kick your way through enemies. Not many stages diverge from this standard game play found in many other games of this time. You usually progress through a very short level, then face some weird boss and then repeat. There is a couple of elevator levels that are a bit different, but for the most part you are proceeding right and punching and kicking the enemies out of your way. Occasionally, you find a weapon that adds some more splat to your kills, but for the most part it is kicks and punches that get you through the ordeals ahead.
So, it is an okay game at times. I would have rather it been a longer game that was a bit easier rather than the extremely hard, but very short game it is. More weapons would have also made it cooler, but for the time it was about as hardcore as you could get. Not many games featured a masked hero that smashes enemies with his fists and takes a shotgun and blows them in two. It needed more stuff like that as the game just feels like it needs a lot of more of everything. It almost plays like an arcade game it is so on the short side.
