Back before gay comedian "Ant" became ANT!, he realized while looking for his next gig following his run on the WB series UNHAPPILY EVER AFTER, that it might be a good idea to look into the booming webcam craze. After doing some interviews with potential models, he found a young, engaging exhibitionist named Kip O'Neal, and they were off! Using the story of how Ant's venture into the world of 24/7 cyber-voyeurism fared as the main springboard, WEBCAM BOYS presents several more online models, most not affiliated with Ant, to give us a much closer look at the kind of guys who make money off of their wild exhibitionist streak. So close, in fact, that some webcam fans may learn a lot more than they ever wanted to know.
Virtually everyone here (except Ant, of course) has either been involved in or at the time this doc was shot, were still involved in the world of gay porn. Be forewarned: if you have a prejudicial view about how only screwed-up people wind up involved in porn and similar pursuits, WEBCAM BOYS will do nothing but reinforce that impression. The models are all very candid in their interviews, and there are several heartbreaking and harrowing tales of domestic abuse, emotional, physical and sexual, as well as alcohol and drug addiction.
But in this impromptu expose, you will also discover something that you may not have been expecting to find: that everyone here is very, very HUMAN. When people have had a lot of things in their lives that make them want to shut down, it's a credit to the doc's director, RADD, that the resilience, hope and even optimism that some of the guys have is made so evident.
So WEBCAM BOYS starts out as a film that you'd think would appeal mostly to those with a strictly prurient interest - and there is no shortage of moments where that requirement is satisfied. But as you watch, it becomes so much more...
