Monday Am Update: Warner Bros/Legendary’s A Minecraft Movie is no sheep at the box office. Who the hell saw this coming? The opening in the U.S. and Canada of $163 million beats that of Barbie ($162M). Yes, tracking pegged this at $65M, and then toward the end of last week we heard projections of $75M-$80M. What went on here? How did tracking miss? A last-minute push by Warner Bros I’m told, in response to the social media heat.

For Jack Black — it’s his biggest opening at the North American box office ahead of Illumination/Nintendo/Universal’s Super Mario Bros Movie ($146.3M). For Jason Momoa, it’s second after Batman v. Superman, but his best as a lead character ahead of Justice League ($94M).

For Warners, Minecraft is third biggest opening of all time after 2011’s Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169M...
