Mother alleges AI chatbot based on Game of Thrones character drove son to take his own life
Earlier this week, Megan Garcia filed a lawsuit in the U.S. District Court in Orlando, Florida against Character.AI, a company that provides artificially intelligent chatbots for people to talk with. Garcia alleges that her 14-year-old son, Sewell Setzer III, became obsessed with a chatbot modeled on the character of Daenerys Targaryen from Game of Thrones, spending hours in his room every day talking to it. The conversations were sometimes romantic or sexual.
On February 28, Setzer committed suicide by shooting himself in the head. This was their final conversation with the chatbot, provided in a screenshot as part of the lawsuit:
