Shot to death by his wife, Gail Collins Pappalardi, on the fifth floor of his apartment on Manhattan's East Side and died at the scene. Prosecutors said the motive was Papalardi's long-running affair with 27-year-old Valerie Merians. Collins was charged with second-degree murder, which was later reduced to negligent homicide. She was convicted and received four years in prison.
