NCIS: Origins Cast Guide: Every Major New And Returning Character
Image
"NCIS: Origins" is a change of pace for CBS' long-running procedural franchise. As demonstrated by shows like the canceled "NCIS: New Orleans" and the short-lived "NCIS: Hawaii," the saga previously set its spin-offs in the present day but changed up the locations, leaving the door open to some exciting crossovers. "Origins," on the other hand, travels back to the 1990s and focuses on the Naval Investigative Service (which was later restructured as the Naval Criminal Investigative Service) during a time when some familiar characters were still rising through the ranks -- and dealing with some serious personal drama outside of work.

The prequel aspect of the show allows "NCIS: Origins" to answer some long-lingering questions fans of the property have been asking for years, such as what actually happened to Leroy Jethro Gibbs' wife and daughter prior to "NCIS" and why he came up with some of his famous rules.

The Studios Just Lit a Fire Under Striking Actors: ‘We’re Not Going Anywhere’
Image
It’s been 97 days since members of the Screen Actors Guild went on strike against the Hollywood studios and streamers, demanding a better contract and asking the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers for protections against artificial intelligence as well as an increase in residual payments. As actors near the 100-day mark, they’re disappointed the studios walked away from the negotiating table last week and don’t seem wanting or willing to reach an agreement, allowing the entertainment industry to get back to its regularly scheduled programming.

15 Best Mockumentary TV Comedy Series, Ranked
Image
The best mockumentary TV comedy series owe much of their popularity to The Office and, since the mid-aughts, have been a staple. A mockumentary — or “mock documentary” — is exactly what it sounds like a TV show or movie that’s scripted but presented as if it’s a documentary. It’s a type of show that’s grown especially popular in the comedy genre. Something about the contrast between the fictional events and characters being depicted in a faux-documentary style heightens the comedic elements.

As mentioned, The Office (U.S.), which ran from 2005 to 2013, kick-started the mockumentary-style trend in television, mainstreaming the use of to-the-camera interviews and other fourth-wall-breaking gags. Although the type of show hit a saturation point for a time, the currently airing Abbott Elementary revived the TV mockumentary genre, proving that mockumentary TV comedy series are as enduring as traditional multi-camera sitcoms.

Actor Ely Henry On His Film ‘Self Reliance,’ Jake Johnson

Ely Henry, who co-stars in the film Self Reliance, spoke to uInterview exclusively at SXSW about the movie.

The film follows Tommy (The New Girl‘s Jake Johnson), who enters a game show to determine whether he lives or dies.

Henry’s not so sure he’d be able to survive a death game like the one in the film. “I would die,” he said with a laugh. “Oh, I mean, look I’d try to get people to hang out with me and you know, I have friends. I have friends. I’ve hung out with people but with constant companionship like that, I would die. I would die. Yeah.”

Late nights working on the film provided his most vivid memories of his time on set. “Yeah,” he recalled, “drinking a coffee at three in the morning ’cause we did a night shoot in Pomona, [California] stands out probably forever...

‘Players’ Explores the World of Esports With More Fascination Than Mockery: TV Review
Image
Chances are you’re either deeply familiar with the wide world of gamers and streamers, or you’re so completely unaware of how far it reaches that the very idea of “esports” is enough to make your head spin. As part of the latter camp, but with a sister very much entrenched in the former, I approached “Players” — the new Paramount+ comedy about a professional gaming team wrestling for relevance — with equal parts caution and curiosity. Could this scripted show delving into what makes gaming so huge make me finally understand why? Or would it rely on niche enough jargon and humor that it’d fly right over my head?

After watching the better part of its 10-episode season, the answer is…well, a bit of both. But in framing the series like a classic sports docuseries in the vein of a “Last Dance,” co-creators Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda...

Paramount+’s ‘Players’: TV Review
Image
Click here to read the full article.

When you think of the two-season run of Dan Perrault and Tony Yacenda’s American Vandal, you probably think of drawn dicks and the Turd Burglar.

Or, if you’re more obsessed with the realities of the television industry, maybe you remember American Vandal as one of the earliest signs of Netflix’s shift to an “ownership is everything” ethos; the show was canceled after two wildly acclaimed seasons because it was a CBS Television Studios production and not a Netflix original.

When I reflect on American Vandal, it’s mostly on the commitment to the exaggerated bit. Both seasons were one-joke mockumentary gags that somehow ended up being less funny and more successful because of Perrault and Yacenda’s astonishingly sincere approach to the stories they were telling and not simply to extended and escalating gags.

After a strangely long absence — they...

‘Players’ Review: The ‘American Vandal’ Team Delivers an Instant Classic Fictional Sports Doc
Image
“Create a satisfying and involving emotional arc for a character named Creamcheese” feels like something out of a dare. Whether it’s on the back of a jersey, listed on screen, or spoken by any number of characters within a sprawling fictional Esports saga, seeing or hearing that collection of vowels should be a dealbreaker.

And yet, the central figure of the new Paramount+ series “Players” is boisterous enough, vulnerable enough, and pathologically fixated on his own image that Creamcheese feels right at home in the echelon of athletes compelling enough for their own documentary series (even if he doesn’t actually exist).

“Players” is the latest offering from creators Tony Yacenda and Dan Perrault, a duo that made two equally earnest and absurd seasons of “American Vandal.” Taking the true crime boom to the halls of a high school, it was a show that used over-the-top premises as a...

Netflix is a Joke Comedy Specials Announced, Get Premiere Dates (TV News Roundup)

Fresh off the first-ever Netflix is a Joke comedy festival, the streamer confirmed which performances will be available to view in the coming weeks, including tributes to late comedians such as Bob Saget and Robin Williams and the yet-to-be-announced date for Gabriel “Fluffy” Iglesias’s groundbreaking set at Dodger Stadium.

Featuring a wide range of events and stars, the festival also made headlines for some of its comedians’ jokes, such as Pete Davidson’s digs at Kanye West. But the biggest news of the fest was when Dave Chappelle was tackled on stage during his set at the Hollywood Bowl, with the attacker being charged with four misdemeanor counts. For its part, Netflix responded by saying, “We care deeply about the safety of creators and we strongly defend the right of stand-up comedians to perform on stage without fear of violence.” Chappelle’s four sold-out shows are not included in...

Connecting Canceled at NBC
Otmara Marrero
Viewers will soon lose their, well, connection to Connecting.

NBC has pulled the pandemic-produced comedy from its Thursday schedule with immediate effect, confirming that the series has been canceled.

No more episodes will air on NBC, but the final four are set to air on NBCUniversal's streaming service, Peacock in the future.

The good news here is that Peacock has a free offering, but it will all come down to whether Peacock makes these episodes available free.

The series was filmed remotely during the coronavirus pandemic, and followed a group of friends who were forced by quarantine restrictions to only spend time together via video chat.

The series opener took place on March 29, 2020, at the very beginning of the lockdown.

The cast included Otmara Marrero (StartUp), Parvesh Cheena (Outsourced), Ely Henry (Suburgatory) and Keith Powell (30 Rock).

Blindspot’s Martin Gero served as co-creator and executive producer.

Connecting Season 1 is...

Connecting has lost its connection… and they can’t even blame it on a faulty wi-fi. NBC has pulled the pandemic comedy from its Thursday night time slot, the network confirmed on Monday, effectively cancelling it after one season. That makes it the least-watched new series premiere on broadcast thus far this fall. It was boosted in its second week by the Trump Town Hall on NBC as its lead-in but fell again after that.

“Connecting” was an ensemble comedy about a group of friends trying to stay close (and sane) through video chats during the Covid-19 pandemic. It starred Otmara Marrero, Preacher Lawson, Shakina Nayfack, Parvesh Cheena, Ely Henry, Jill Knox and Keith Powell.

‘Connecting…’ Makes Socially Distanced Storytelling Bearable with Sitcom Beats: TV Review
Image
An understandable if tricky to navigate instinct during these many months of quarantine is the instinct to create meaningful art out of These Times. Even as the entire world goes on pause, creativity marches stubbornly on, hoping to make sense out of senseless things. But with no end in sight, it’s just about impossible for any art about the pandemic made during the pandemic to shed much light on what’s happening besides the fact that everyone feels like they’re losing their minds. That’s held true for TV shows about life in isolation that lean heavily on social distancing and Zoom. Something like Freeform’s “Love in the Time of Corona” or HBO’s “Coastal Elites,” while well-intentioned, failed to capture much about this era beyond the fact that it’s surreal. On the face of it, “Connecting…”, NBC’s new show about socially distanced friends shot in quarantine,...

‘Emily In Paris,’ ‘The Walking Dead,’ ‘Monsterland’ Set for PaleyFest Fall TV Previews
Image
The Paley Center for Media’s annual fall television event has moved beyond “previews.” This year, the robust slate will include some sneak peeks at upcoming series, such as Hulu’s “Monsterland” and Netflix’s “Emily in Paris,” but it is also celebrating shows that already launched — and weeks earlier — such as Netflix’s “Away,” Fox’s “Filthy Rich” and HBO’s “We Are Who We Are.”

Still dubbed the 14th annual PaleyFest Fall TV Previews, the festival is going virtual this year, in accordance with ongoing health and safety concerns amid the coronavirus pandemic. All panels will be viewable on official sponsor Verizon’s Yahoo Entertainment Channel. Citi returns as the official card of the festival and its members can preview panels first, as of today, Sept. 29 at 10 a.m. Et. The panels will then be live for the public starting on Friday, Oct. 2 at 8 p.m. Et, with...

‘Superstore’ & ‘Connecting’ Move Back A Week In Latest NBC Schedule Shuffle
Image
Superstore and pandemic comedy Connecting are moving back a week as NBC continues to shuffle its fall schedule.

Superstore will return on Thursday October 29, having previously been dated for Thursday October 22 at 8pm, while Connecting, which was originally set for Thursday October 1 at 8:30pm will move to Thursday October 1.

This comes 24 hours after NBC moved up the premiere of season five of This Is Us with the family drama launching with a two-hour premiere on October 27.

The sixth season of Superstore will see the exit of star America Ferrera. However, the actress will guest star in the first two episodes of the season after the Covid-19 production shutdown meant that only one half of her two part finale aired. In addition to appearing in the season opener, as she says goodbye to her colleagues, she will also return for the second episode.

Superstore stars Ben Feldman, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn,...

‘Smallfoot’ DVD Review
Features the voices of: Channing Tatum, James Corden, Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, Gina Rodriguez, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry, Jimmy Tatro, Patricia Heaton, Justin Roiland, Jack Quaid, Sarah Baker, Kelly Holden Bashar | Written by Karey Kirkpatrick, Clare Sera | Directed by Karey Kirkpatrick, Jason Reisig

[Note: With the film out now on DVD and Blu-ray, here's a reposting of our review of children's animated movie Smallfoot from the films cinematic release]

In Smallfoot Migo (Channing Tatum), a big-hearted Yeti, learns that the myths he’s be raised believing are false when he discovers a mysterious “smallfoot”, actually a human TV host (James Corden) desperately in need of a comeback.

Warner Bros.’ Smallfoot is as charming, inconsequential and uplifting as you may imagine any animated musical is today. It broods charm and charisma to an almost sickly extent, albeit perfectly adequate for its target audience. Filled with charming and satisfying musical numbers that are undeniably effective. Creating a warm and engaging atmosphere to the proceedings that unfold, yet the film itself,...

Smallfoot Review
Even though it’s only October, it’s officially the start of the festive cinema season that makes long winter evenings more manageable. Smallfoot – a word play on the legend of Bigfoot, the abominable snowman or yeti – is one such family contender, ready for half-term viewing.

This animated musical tale from co-directors Karey Kirkpatrick and Jason Reisig sets the snowy scene in a yeti world high above the clouds, but not too far from our own, with some younger residents possessing the same hopes, dreams and ambitions. The human or ‘Smallfoot’ is the great mystery for the yetis to uncover, as well as a taboo subject.

It takes Migo (voiced by Channing Tatum) to break with tradition and start the ball rolling, after encountering a plane crash and a human falling through the cloud bank. What follows wakes the explorer in the yeti and his contemporaries to discover the truth about mankind,...

Review: ‘Smallfoot’ Offers a Politicized Look at the Importance of Truth
It might be hyperbolic to call Smallfoot the most dangerous film of the year, but it wouldn’t necessarily be wrong. Yes, there’s a wholesome message at the back of what Karey Kirkpatrick (who co-directed with Jason Reisig and co-wrote with Clare Sera from a previous script that itself was based on Sergio Pablos’ book Yeti Tracks) has put onscreen, but it’s not difficult to misconstrue its meaning if you’re motivated to do so. Ask him and he’ll say it’s a story about not lying to those you love to “protect” them from external oppression because that itself is oppression. And it’s also about a community of bigfoots finding common ground with a community of smallfoots despite long-standing historical acrimony. Is this starting to sound familiar?

On its surface Smallfoot stars a genial yeti named Migo (Channing Tatum) who believes his life is perfect.

Phil Lord
‘Smallfoot’ Review: Channing Tatum Is a Yeti Good Time, But This Animated Musical Tries Too Hard
Phil Lord
Phil Lord and Chris Miller may be executive producers on “Smallfoot,” but the movie feels like a pale imitation of their unique comedic energy. The double entendre-laden humor and catchy tunes that made “The Lego Movie” a hit are woefully missing from “Smallfoot,” a musical that tries too hard to educate kids and not hard enough to entertain them.

The premise of “Smallfoot” is inventive enough — what if Bigfoot not only existed, but lived among a whole clan of other bigfeet in a highly advanced society on a mountaintop above the clouds? Such is the adorable village where we meet Migo (Channing Tatum), a simple gong-ringer’s son who wants nothing more than to grow up and continue his father’s (Danny DeVito) legacy. What, you may ask, is a gong-ringer? It’s not good to ask too many questions in this village, but…the gong-ringer rings the gong every...

“Smallfoot” stars Channing Tatum as the yeti, Migo, and James Corden as the smallfoot, Percy. Also starring are Zendaya, Common, LeBron James, Danny DeVito, Gina Rodriguez, Yara Shahidi, Ely Henry, and Jimmy Tatro.

Smallfoot Star Zendaya Wants You to Know That Loving Yourself Is a Process - and a Long One
Image Source: Getty / Christopher Polk

When you think of Zendaya, the first thing that probably comes to mind is her confidence. Whether she's strutting down the red carpet in a stunning gown or calling bullsh*t on negative societal norms, the 22-year-old just looks like she has it together. Despite how effortless she makes it all seem, Zendaya is adamant that that kind of ease in one's self doesn't come easy.

"The evolution of loving yourself and becoming comfortable within yourself takes time and it's a process," Zendaya told Popsugar. "It does not happen overnight. You have to work at it. And nobody has it. Even the people that you think have it, don't necessarily have it."

Zendaya, who voices Meechee for the new animated film Smallfoot and contributed to the soundtrack, has always been seen as self-assured and unafraid of speaking her mind since she came into the public eye.

Kevin Hart-Tiffany Haddish’s ‘Night School’ to Score High Marks in Box Office Debut
Tiffany Haddish
Tiffany Haddish and Kevin Hart’s upcoming comedy is studying up for an A+ opening.

Haddish and Hart’s “Night School” is heading for a debut around $25 million in the Sept. 28-30 weekend, early tracking showed Thursday. Warner Bros.’ animated “Smallfoot” is eyeing similar numbers in its opening that same weekend.

Universal’s “Night School” is the first lead role for Haddish since she broke out in “Girls Trip” last year. She plays a no-nonsense teacher heading adult instruction at a high school with Hart as a particularly hapless student, told at one point that he is “clinically dumb.”

Tracking for “Night School” ranges from $21 million to $34 million. The film is directed by Malcolm D. Lee, who directed Haddish in “Girls Trip,” which opened to $31.2 million on July 21-23, 2017, its way to $115 million domestically. Hart produces via his Hartbeat Productions banner and Will Packer is producing for his Will Packer Productions.
