Exclusive: Michael Bay has left WME, the agency where he has spent the bulk of his directing career. The exit has been in the works for a couple of weeks. Bay isn’t taking meetings at the moment, and in a memo he sent the agency, he left open the possibility of a return. But it seems unlikely from here.

Bay had been repped for years principally by Ari Emanuel, and this goes back to when his primary was John Fogelman, the latter of whom exited the agency a decade ago. Bay has had a number of point agents, but his main guy has been Rich Cook. Until Cook exited to be one of the founding partners of Range Media Partners. Cook continued to share Bay with WME at Range, but the Transformers director’s run with WME seemed to sour over the experience with his most recent film, the shot-in-the-pandemic actioner Ambulance.

Roku is about to make your mouth water. The device-maker is creating two new unscripted culinary shows, “Morimoto’s Sushi Master” and “The Cupcake Guys,” for the Roku Channel. In addition, the streamer’s upcoming Spanish-language cooking show “¡Que Delicioso!” has set a premiere date for November 25.

“Morimoto’s Sushi Master” stars Masaharu Morimoto, a Japanese chef and restaurateur best known for his appearances on the original Japanese cooking competition show “Iron Chef” and its American adaptation on the Food Network. Morimoto will serve as the head judge for the new six-episode series, which sees eight chefs competing in various challenges to master the art of sushi making. Actress Lyrica Okano from Hulu’s “Runaways” hosts the series, which features Santa Fe’s Coyote Café head chef Dakota Weiss and New York Times food columnist Kenji Lopez-Alt as additional judges.

Two new lifestyle series are being added to Roku Originals’ slate of programming, and its upcoming Spanish-language original series “¡Que Delicioso!” has officially announced its premiere date and hosts.

Thursday, Roku announced “Morimoto’s Sushi Master” and “The Cupcake Guys” will be the newest original series joining the Roku Originals family.

On “Morimoto’s Sushi Master,” eight contestants will battle it out against one another to see who comes out on top as the master sushi chef. Hosted by “Marvel’s Runaways” star Lyrica Okano, the six-episode unscripted series will feature “Iron Chef” star and restauranteur Masaharu Morimoto, who will also act as the lead judge. Chef Dakota Weiss, executive chef of Coyote Café and former co-owner of Sweetfin Poke, and Chef Kenji Lopez-Alt, the New York Times food columnist and author of bestselling cookbook “The Food Lab,” will also serve as judges.

“Morimoto’s Sushi Master” will be produced by Ample Entertainement.

Roku is cooking up a pair of new original non-scripted series.

The streamer has ordered sushi competition series Morimoto’s Sushi Master and The Cupcake Guys from Michael Strahan.

Morimoto’s Sushi Master, which is the first-ever cooking competition series focused on the art of sushi-making, is hosted by Lyrica Okano (Marvel’s Runaways). The six-part series will see eight competing sushi chefs work to impress Morimoto, along with judges Chef Dakota Weiss, Executive Chef of Santa Fe’s Coyote Café and former co-owner of Sweetfin Poke, and Chef Kenji Lopez-Alt.

It comes from The Invisible Pilot producer Ample Entertainment with Ari Mark, Phil Lott, Kathryn Vaughn, Liz Cook and Masuhira Morimoto as executive producers.

The El Rey Network, which is getting set to make a rare transition from cable TV to free streaming, has set a deal for crucial real estate on the Roku Channel.

Starting tomorrow, the Robert Rodriguez-founded network, will start streaming as a 24-7 linear offering on the Roku Channel, one of more than 190 on the free outlet. Launched in 2013 as a result of the agreement reached by Comcast and NBCUniversal with regulators yielding new commitments to diverse programming options, El Rey targeted young, English-speaking Latino viewers. It wound down its nearly decade-long run on traditional pay-tv at the end of 2020, having peaked at 40 million households. While other channels have gone dark on cable and returned as digital properties, El Rey is one of the first to attempt such a shift during the streaming era.

Filmmaker Robert Rodriguez has taken El Rey Network — once a linear cable TV channel — and revived the Latino-focused brand for the streaming era in partnership with Cinedigm.

Launched in 2013, El Rey Network at its peak reached over 40 million pay-tv households. The cable channel, stocked with a range of English-language scripted and unscripted programming catering to Latino audiences and beyond, shut down at the end of 2020.

In partnership with Cinedigm, El Rey Network will relaunch as a free-to-watch over-the-top streaming service available on platforms including connected TVs, digital set-top boxes, media-streaming devices and the web. In addition, Cinedigm will work with El Rey to ink deals with advertisers for custom content. Cinedigm also will exclusively distribute Rodriguez’s feature film “Red 11” and a companion docuseries, “Rebel Without A Crew: The Robert Rodriguez Film School,” to Ott platforms.

The date of the El Rey Network streaming channel launch has yet to be determined.

June 1, 2019 marks the official 10-year anniversary of the William Morris Agency-Endeavor merger. As part of Deadline’s coverage of the milestone, we reached out to John Ferriter, former Wma Evp/Worldwide Head of Non-Scripted TV, who was the only board member in either company who voted against the merger. June 1, 2019 marks the official 10-year anniversary of the William Morris Agency-Endeavor merger. It wasn’t a marriage of equals, with 14-year-old Endeavor, then valued at $100 million-plus, joining forces with a Hollywood royalty, the 111-year-old Wma valued at more than twice as much. But, in one of the most shocking Hollywood takeovers, it was Endeavor, with its 80 agents, that came up on top, taking advantage of the existing fractures within Wma leadership to take control of the bigger rival, which boasted more than 300 agents at the time.

“The Wma leadership was totally blindsided; they truly believed that they would be running the combined company,” one insider said. Indeed, Wma was supposed to control five of Wme’s nine board seats versus four for Endeavor, with Wma CEO Jim Wiatt leading Wme as chairman and Wma president Dave Wirtschafter as co-ceo alongside Endeavor toppers Ari Emanuel and Patrick Whitesell.

Given his relationship with Robert Rodriguez, it may be more surprising that he didn't appear in the first season. However, it has been officially announced that Danny Trejo will be appearing in Season 2 of From Dusk Till Dawn as a new villain known as The Regulator:

We’ve got an update on From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series that involves the casting of a certain That 70s Show star – one of my personal favorites – and points to many fun times for the show should it turn out to be as good as the feature it is based on. Wilmer Valderrama is taking a series regular position on the show, a product of the infant El Rey Network, but one that has a certain amount of badassery to it. I for one am excited for what it means for Valderrama’s career. He’s an actor who hasn’t had much exposure since the end of That 70s Show. He had a part on Awake, but given that series short lifespan it would be nice for him to work on something that lasts longer than a year.
