He is of Dutch (Afrikaner) descent, along with smaller amounts (to varying degrees) of German, Swiss-German, Danish, and French, ancestry.

In an interview with Charlie Rose, Vosloo noted he looked similar to actor Billy Zane. According to Vosloo, when people came asking him if he was "the guy in Titanic", he replied "of course, of course!" as a joke.

His last name is pronounced Fos-Loo.

Became a naturalized United States citizen in 1988.

Won The Dalro Award as Best Actor for both Boetie Gaan Border Toe! (1984) and Circles in a Forest (1989). He was nominated as Best Actor for a Dalro Award for the film version of More Is 'n Lang Dag.
