Was the inaugural speaker at the USC Annenberg Distinguished Lecture Series on Latin American Art and Culture.
The father of her daughter is Argentine musician Rodrigo Garcia Prieto.

I was always obsessed with the thought that there was nothing special about me. I don't have a great voice. I'm not a great pianist. I play the accordion, which is kind of weird. I spent most of my time locked inside my home writing songs. I needed someone from the outside world to validate my efforts. When a label signed me and bankrolled my first album, I just couldn't believe it.
I think the industry knows more what to do with a sexy girl than a geeky-looking girl.
I grew up speaking two languages, listening to music from two very different countries. This gave me a very wide view of the world. ... It also influences the way that I make music because I don't consider myself to be either from here or from there. I'm not afraid to combine styles. I have no problem singing ranchera or hip-hop, and I can understand the subtleties of both styles. For me, there's no conflict.
