Al Sharpton

His ancestors were owned by relatives of the late Senator Strom Thurmond.
Of Native American descent specifically Cherokee.
Vieques, Puerto Rico: Sharpton was protesting against US Defense Department bombing target practice on the island of Vieques at the Roosevelt Roads Naval Air Station. Sharpton was jailed for 90 days on trespassing charges while protesting and was held in a Puerto Rican jail for two days before being moved to the Metropolitan Federal Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York City, NY on May 25, 2001, and given Federal Bureau of Prisons ID# 21458-069. He was released on August 17, 2001. Due in part to the protests of Sharpton and others (including Jesse Jackson, Edward James Olmos, Robert F. Kennedy Jr.), President Bill Clinton executed an agreement with the then Governor of Puerto Rico (Rosello) to close Roosevelt Roads in 2003).
Introduced Michael Jackson at James Brown's funeral, telling the crowd: "I don't care what the media says tonight, James Brown wanted Michael Jackson with him here today. He said ... 'I love Michael.' He said, 'Tell him don't worry about coming home. They always scandalize those that have the talent." (30 December 2006).
He is the basis for the character "Reverend Bacon" in the novel and film La hoguera de las vanidades (1990).

I knew from the age of four that I wanted to preach. I didn't even consider it strange that grown people were listening to this kid preaching until I was around thirteen. I have never believed in limitations.
