Paramount+ is going all-in on its critically acclaimed British crime drama “MobLand.”
Revealed to Variety exclusively, the company is launching an ambitious Emmy campaign that surprisingly places both Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan in the running for lead drama actor. The decision to push Brosnan as a co-lead — rather than a supporting contender as many had assumed — is one of several surprising moves in the streamer’s Emmy strategy.
Helen Mirren, meanwhile, will compete for supporting drama actress, avoiding a head-to-head clash with her own work in “1923,” Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama, where she is considered a possible contender for lead drama actress.
Created by Ronan Bennett, “MobLand” centers on Harry Da Souza (Hardy), a fixer for the powerful London-based Harrigan crime family, led by Conrad (Brosnan) and Maeve Harrigan (Mirren). As rival gangs threaten the family’s empire, Harry is tasked with maintaining control and preventing a full-scale war.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 4, Episode 9, “A Slippery Slope.”] Hacks delivered its biggest twist to date in the latest Season 4 installment, “A Slippery Slope,” as Deborah (Jean Smart) essentially blew up her dream by defying the powers behind her late-night show, Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn). After Winnie Landell (Helen Hunt) was fired when Deborah complained about her, Bob became more directly involved in the day-to-day operations of Deborah’s show. When he suggested that Deborah host Ethan Summers (Eric Balfour), an actor accused of abuse, who she and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) had previously agreed would not appear. Bob wanted it done to cross-promote the company’s film with Ethan, Shadow Soldier, and so Ava and Deborah took the opportunity to craft an interview that would put the actor on the spot with a joke. In the end, the joke was nixed, and Ava was really upset, which led her to vent to former...

Warning: The following story contains spoilers about the ninth episode of Season 4 of Hacks, "A Slippery Slope."
Not to be hyperbolic, but Thursday's episode of Hacks might be its most important one yet. "It is the most pivotal episode of the series so far," co-creator, co-showrunner, director, and star Paul W. Downs says on the latest episode of Awards Magnet.
In "A Slippery Slope," written by Downs and fellow creators and showrunners Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky, the repercussions of network head Bob Lipka (Tony Goldwyn) doing Deborah (Jean Smart) a "favor" the previous episode by firing Winnie (Helen Hunt) start to build when Bob asks Deborah to have scandal-ridden movie star Ethan Sommers (Eric Balfour) on her show. After Deborah acquiesces when she's asked to cut her joke about his secret Snapchat, a peeved Ava (Hannah Einbinder) spills all to her old On the Contrary boss Lewis (Aristotle Athari...

The Twister: Caught in the Storm (1996), directed by Jan de Bont, plunges viewers into the heart of tornado country with an adrenaline-charged mix of disaster spectacle and human drama. As a high-octane thriller, its logline is simple: a veteran storm-chaser (Bill Paxton) and a fearless meteorologist (Helen Hunt) race against spiraling twisters to deploy revolutionary data-gathering probes.
Set against the vast plains of the rural American Midwest during peak tornado season, the film stakes are personal and scientific—lives hang in the balance even as a breakthrough in weather prediction looms.
The director’s eye for scale captures both the sweeping grandeur of swirling skies and the intimate moments of fear etched on characters’ faces. Viewers are invited to witness raw nature in motion while tracking relationships frayed and reforged under extraordinary duress.

It's not hard to see why high schools have been a consistent part of film history when you really think about it. There are so many opportunities for rich storytelling around the high school experience. From coming-of-age tales and high school melodramas to teen comedies and everything in between, high school has always provided filmmakers with an endless source of engaging stories.
As such, the best High School movies don't necessarily need the most visually engaging school as a backdrop. The emotional journeys that emerge from the high school experience are more than enough for a good film. But it doesn't hurt to have a memorable backdrop for your high school movie, and Los Angeles has what might just be the most famous school in the entire world.

Tornadoes can be terrifying, but that doesn't stop people from watching a movie about them. In real life, there are courageous storm chasers who start their potentially dangerous journey with one mission: to look a storm in its eye, or rather, get up close and personal to study it or admire its scary beauty. While when this happens in real life, fear takes over those at home getting alerts and warnings from meteorologists to take cover, movies like Twistersare entertainingly whirling up the charts. According to Flix Patrol, the 2024 film is among the top movies to watch on Prime Video.
It hasn't left the top ten on the chart and is currently staying in the top three. Twisters is a sequel to Twister (1996), which starred Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton. The Glen Powell-led production follows a clashing group of storm chasers who investigate a tornado outbreak in Oklahoma.

Like the 1970s, the '90s were a great decade for disaster films. In addition to films like "Deep Impact," "Armageddon," "Independence Day," "Dante's Peak," and "Volcano," there was, of course, "Twister." The Jan de Bont film followed a storm-chasing couple on the verge of divorce, chasing one of the worst outbreaks of tornados in the history of Oklahoma. Though the film is now almost three decades old, it holds up!
There are lots of reasons why the movie works so well. One major factor was de Bont's insistence on practical effects. "We dropped those combines hanging from helicopters onto the road as the car was driving, which, of course, makes for the best reaction you can get from the actors, because it's goddamned real," he told Vulture. "They really fall from the sky, and it is not like a little fall."
Another major aspect of the film's success was its cast.

Set in the 32nd century as a spin-off from Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be a series departure from the usual Star Trek canon that follows the adventures of a Federation starship and its captain and crew rather than the faculty and young cadets of Earth’s Starfleet Academy. With Helen Hunt cast as the Academy's captain and chancellor, it will be the third time a Star Trek series is led by a female captain, following Kate Mulgrew's Captain Kathyrn Janeway of Star Trek: Voyager and Sonequa Martin-Green’s Captain Michael Burnham of Star Trek: Discovery.

[Warning: The below contains Major spoilers for Hacks Season 4, Episode 4, “I Love LA.”] Hacks‘ latest episode, “I Love LA,” led Deborah (Jean Smart) and her right-hand man Damien (Mark Indelicato) to the club for an eventful night out in celebration of her late-night show’s premiere. While Deborah waited for the evening broadcast of her first episode taping, she attended dinner to enjoy it alongside colleagues like Winnie (Helen Hunt) and musical guest Randy Newman, but after she was stood up, she turned to Damien for company. The young man was quite obviously nervous sharing the table with his boss, but as the conversation progressed, he revealed his own hardships about acclimating to Los Angeles and suggested that if Deborah accompanied him to the club would do wonders for his social life. And so, Deborah joined Damien at the club and had such a good time that she stayed long after he’d left. Her fun was abruptly ended,...

In the installment, Deborah gears up to put on her first episode of the late-night show she and head writer Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder) have been crafting since the beginning of this season, but it seemed anxiety got the best of her during rehearsal, forcing Deborah offstage only seconds after she stepped onto it. In order to reassure the network of her health, Winnie (Helen Hunt) set up a doctor’s appointment for Deborah. When Deborah entered the waiting room for her doctor’s visit, she happened to sit next to sketch comedy legend Carol Burnett. The ladies have a moving conversation about nerves,...

The 2025 Academy Awards will live on as an exciting night for first-time nominees. The ceremony saw a handful of veteran actors getting nominated for the first time in their careers, including Demi Moore ("The Substance"), Guy Pearce ("The Brutalist"), and Isabella Rossellini ("Conclave"), and one actor got a big, shocking boost when first-time nominee Mikey Madison won Best Actress for "Anora." But for every new Oscar nominee that comes along each year, there's still a surprising number of talented performers who have yet to be honored by the Academy with even a single nomination.
Despite being recognized by the Golden Globes, BAFTAs (basically the British Oscars), Screen Actors Guild (SAG), and other distinguished institutions, certain artists just can't seem to get on the Academy's radar. A few famous names received honorary Oscars, despite never getting nominated, while the Academy has completely iced out others with some pretty controversial Oscar snubs.

“Hacks” has never been shy about the fact Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) is a tough boss. Over the past three seasons, Deborah has slapped, screamed at, ignored, belittled and even sued her key creative partner Ava (Hannah Einbinder). That long list doesn’t even cover the time she spit her gum into Ava’s hand. But thanks to taking over their late night show, that all changes in Season 4.
“It’s exciting for Ava, because she now gets to have Hr,” series co-creator, showrunner and executive producer Lucia Aniello told TheWrap.

From Dorothy’s home getting caught in a wild wind storm in 1939’s “The Wizard of Oz” to Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton running toward danger in 1996’s “Twister,” the tornado has long permeated American screen culture. With “A Brief History of Chasing Storms,” filmmaker Curtis Miller adds to this tradition with a comprehensive study of the iconic phenomenon.
Premiering at Swiss documentary festival Visions du Réel, Miller’s film explores the mythology around the tornado in a road movie that crisscrosses the region of the American Midwest known as the “Tornado Alley.” Through visiting several towns in the region and speaking with its tornado-enthusiast inhabitants, the filmmaker traces the history of the country in parallel with that of the weather condition. Speaking with Variety ahead of the world premiere, Miller recalls always having had an interest in tornadoes, thanks to growing up in a region of Indiana often affected by the storms.

The fourth season of Hacks is hard to watch. For one, the two main characters are at each other’s throats for most of it. The conflict is so excessive and prolonged that it becomes grating—not to mention not all that funny. It may be interesting, but what happened to that famed sardonic humor?
However, this critically acclaimed and award-winning series proves that the season isn’t just about the laughs. No, Hacks is about the journey that brings these women back together. Our own 9 to 5, under the hot Vegas heat, neon lights, and biting after-midnight humor, that’s all its own.
The new season follows legendary comedian and QVC queen Deborah Vance (Watchmen’s Jean Smart) and her longtime writer Ava Daniels (Julia’s Hannah Einbinder) at the top of their professions. The catch? They had to blackmail and betray each other to get there.

The reigning queens of comedy are finally back with a new season full of biting one-liners, unexpected twists, and a feud so good Ryan Murphy could turn it into a limited series. Of course, we're talking about Hacks, the Max original comedy series that's the incumbent winner of the Emmy Award for Outstanding Comedy Series. It's time to get ready for the Hacks season 4 premiere on Thursday April 10, which arrives with two episodes to kick off the season.
When we last left Deborah (Jean Smart) and Ava (Hannah Einbinder) in the season 3 finale, Ava was expertly maneuvering her checkmate on Deborah in order to score the head writer position on her new late night show. Deborah had otherwise promised Ava the job then walked back on the offer, but Ava held a particular piece of scandalous blackmail over her head to put her boss in a position where she couldn't say no again.

It’s only been a few days since Taylor Tomlinson ended her run as the only woman in late-night TV to host her own show solo. And it wasn’t because After Midnight, the show she had hosted on CBS, wasn’t successful: It had just been renewed for a third season earlier this month. But Tomlinson had been open all along about needing to be convinced to do the show, which she recently said would never be her “thing thing.” So when she decided she didn’t want to go to an office three days a week anymore — and CBS, presumably, didn’t throw enough money at her to make that more appealing than doing stand-up on the road — Tomlinson quit After Midnight, and CBS announced that it wouldn’t replace her. Instead, it would end After Midnight and stop trying to program the 12:30 a.m. time slot entirely.

With a legacy spanning decases, it's still inconceivable that anyone could dislike "The Princess Bride." Released in 1987, the fantasy romantic comedy was written by William Goldman (already a two-time Academy Award-winner for his work on "All the President's Men" and "Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid"), directed by Rob Reiner (then best known for directing "Stand By Me" the year prior), and featured a miraculously stacked cast. Though it did just okay at the box office, the film has since become a cult classic that -- in large part through the continued success of this cast -- retroactively vindicates those who were early champions of its brilliance.
Whether senior actor or child star, veteran of the screen or relative newcomer, everyone with a role in the core ensemble of "The Princess Bride" brings something wildly unexpected to their individual role no matter how small. Incidentally, the vast majority of these...

The most exciting part of movie-going for many is right before it starts, when you settle into your AMC Theaters recliner to watch Nicole Kidman remind us why we love the movies. Nevermind the popcorn, previews, or candy: Nicole Kidman makes movies better.
Of course, the actress has had a long and storied career prior to becoming the face of AMC Theaters. The Australian actress made her film debut at only 16-years-old, before her profile slowly began to rise in the late '80s and early '90s with films like "Dead Calm," "Days of Thunder," and "Billy Bathgate." By the end of the last decade of the millennium, Kidman had become an A-list celebrity, making tabloid headlines for her marriage with Tom Cruise, and even racking up Oscar nominations as an established and profitable movie star.

The advent of home video completely reshaped the movie business as we know it. Before VHS became prominent in the '80s, once a movie left theaters, the only way to capitalize on it later was occasional airings on TV, and there weren't even as many channels back then. The market was reinvented once again when DVDs were introduced in the mid-'90s, which made watching movies at home all the more convenient. "Be kind, rewind" was a thing of the past.
It may seem trite now, but DVD (aka Digital Video Disc) was revolutionary at the time. From easier access to better picture quality, and even special features, it was a game changer. But what was the first movie available for folks who picked up a DVD player? The most commonly accepted answer to that question is the '90s disaster movie classic "Twister.

André Holland is a busy man. His recent TV series The Big Cigar and Terminator Zero were great, and his new film The Actor is a personal favorite, a film noir masterpiece. He is also starring in this year's The Dutchman, Once Again... (Statues Never Die), and Love, Brooklyn, along with the film The Revisionist, which stars Holland alongside Dustin Hoffman, Alison Brie, and Tom Sturridge. Like The Actor, The Revisionist deals with the blurring of lines between art and life, truth and fiction, identity and performance; Holland plays the titular actor in The Actor and a writer in The Revisionist. Though, as Holland told MovieWeb in a recent interview, the two films are different in many ways.
"It's completely different, and it's still very much [happening]," said Holland (who is also currently attending Harvard Divinity School). "We just finished maybe six weeks ago, something like that, or maybe two months.

There's no one in our modern film landscape like Sydney Sweeney. In a culture where looks tend to dominate your level of success, Sweeney has devoured stereotypes -- because let's face it, she's stunning -- and ultimately has made a name for herself with the quality of her work both on and offscreen. Though she did her first TV and film stints way back in 2009, her career didn't truly start to pick up until nearly a decade later in 2018. Since then, she has completely taken the industry by storm as a performer and, even more recently, as a dedicated producer.
Sweeney doesn't have a ton of noteworthy credits to her name at this point in her career, but there's no denying she's already done some extremely memorable top-notch work, and there's even more in the pipeline with her upcoming turn as boxer Christy Martin in an upcoming biopic. From dramas to rom-coms,...

The idea behind "Freaky Friday" is a fantastically fun film formula, following a mother and daughter who switch bodies one Friday, forcing them to find new respect and empathy for one another through the experience. The most successful interpretation of the story was the 2003 Mark Waters movie, starring Lindsay Lohan as teenager Anna Coleman and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mother Tess, a widowed psychiatrist planning her wedding to new beau Ryan (Mark Harmon). It's a funny film with great performances from both Curtis and Lohan, who embrace the campier side of things and let the comedy run a bit wild.
It's a tremendous amount of fun watching Curtis and Lohan pretend to be one another, and now we're going to get a chance to see them do it all over again. Just as "Freaky Friday" examined the challenges of being a teenager and a middle-aged mom, the upcoming sequel...

Together, they navigate both the comedy industry and their own personal struggles with plenty of ups and downs along the way. Hack season 4 will also feature Paul W. Downs, Carl Clemons-Hopkin, Helen Hunt, Tony Goldwyn, and Kaitlin Olson.
Now, Max has unveiled a new trailer confirming that Hacks season 4 will debut on April 10 at 9 pm Et. After various productions in Los Angeles were temporarily stalled following the wildfire, the comedy show will return with a season that promises more sharp wit, drama, and chaos as Deborah and Ava struggle to get along while trying to get their late-night show off the ground.

Hacks is back — and earlier than ever before. Season 4 of the Emmy-winning comedy will premiere with two episodes on April 10 at 9 p.m. Et/Pt, Max announced Tuesday, along with a trailer.
The rest of the 10-episode season will roll out with a single episode on Thursdays for four weeks, then Episodes 7 and 8 on May 15, Episode 9 on May 22, and the season finale on May 29 — right before the May 31 Emmy eligibility deadline. That's a tweak from previous seasons when the show would debut in May and air double episodes every week.
Season 4 will pick up in the aftermath of Ava (Hannah Einbinder) blackmailing Deborah (Jean Smart) to get the head writer job at the latter's new late-night show in the Season 3 finale. "Tensions rise as Deborah and Ava endeavor to get their late night show off the ground and make history doing it," reads the logline.
