Marcelino, a widower shepherd living in the Aragonese Pyrenees saw his three young daughters, Cándida, Visi, and Nieves, go to Madrid to find better lives; they've all gotten married, had sons, and forgotten their father. One day, Marcelino receives a letter from Cándida, who invites him to come for a long visit. What she really wants is some help from her father, as she's not able to take care of her 10 daughters and her upcoming child. Marcelino goes to Madrid, but once there, he only finds an unknown, frantic, hostile world and three unhappy daughters.

Agustín Valverde is an old widower peasant who has always lived in the village of Calacervia, near Zaragoza. One day, he decides on a whim to go settle down in Madrid. When he arrives in the capital he is caught in the vortex of the Gran Vía's busy traffic. With great difficulty he manages to reach the apartment of Agustin hijo, his son, who has become a renowned doctor. His 40-year-old son lives a luxurious life there with his wife Luciana and their daughter Sara. But things are far from ideal: the three are annoyed by his uninvited presence, and he is troubled by the lack of moral values that seems to govern his relatives: frivolity, duplicity, and conceit reign supreme among them.

Antonio Martínez is an old-fashioned cab driver who rides around Madrid, boasting about his children: Juan, who shares his job as a cab driver; Luisa, a ladies' hairdresser, Antoñito, who is studying to be a lawyer, and Paloma, who is going to be a housewife.
