‘Severance’s’ Ólafur Darri Ólafsson on Cooking and Crime in ‘Reykjavik Fusion,’ Hörður Rúnarsson on Breaking Away From Scandi Noir
Image
Led by “Severance” star Ólafur Darri Ólafsson, “Reykjavic Fusion,” one of the highest-profile competition contenders at France’s Canneseries, is described by executive producer Erik Barmack of Wild Sheep Content as “‘Breaking Bad’ meets ‘The Bear.’”

When protagonist Jónas, a gifted chef imprisoned supposedly for tax fraud, gets out and opens a restaurant backed by a crime lord, his life becomes a daily exercise in damage control, as his life spirals into crime.

All Jonas wants is to develop his passion for haute cuisine, featuring “Icelandic ingredients cooked Asian style, with all kinds of secret twists,” as he explains to his fellow cons. But he’s soon a reluctant accomplice to murder and drowning with debt, jeopardizing his parole, life, and loved ones.

Chic, sleak, fast-paced, packed with action near unprecedented in Icelandic series such as car chases, “Rekjavik Fusion” plays out on a far larger canvas than nearly all Icelandic series.

Image
The 15th edition of the Beijing International Film Festival kicks off on Friday, and its competition lineup of 15 titles includes three homegrown Chinese movies.

Chinese actor-director Jiang Wen (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Let the Bullets Fly) will serve as the head of the main competition jury that will hand out the fest’s Tiantan Awards.

Here is THR‘s closer look at the three Chinese films in this year’s Beijing competition program.

Hao Ming and Li Peiran’s Better Me, Better You

Executive producer and actress Ma Li stars as Bai Liping in the drama Better Me, Better You, described as an ode to female resilience.

The star plays a caregiver from Northeastern China who leaves a life of domestic violence behind “to seek a better life in the city, only to face repeated setbacks.” In Beijing, she meets a lonely elderly woman called Tang Shuyin, portrayed by Zhao Shuzhen.

Chinese Filmmakers Vie for Glory at Beijing’s Tiantan Awards
Image
Three Chinese films are in competition at the 15th Beijing International Film Festival’s flagship Tiantan Awards, each bringing unique perspectives on human connection, justice, and survival to the screen.

“Better Me, Better You”: A Song to Female Resilience

Mahua FunAge’s breakthrough female-focused drama “Better Me, Better You,” directed by Hao Ming and Li Peiran, represents a new direction for the hitherto comedy-focused group. The film stars Ma Li, who also serves as producer, portraying Bai Liping, a caregiver from Northeast China fleeing domestic violence.

“What initially attracted me was the touching relationship between the two female characters in the story,” Ma tells Variety. “Bai Liping, the nanny, and Tang Shuyin, the retired teacher, have completely different identities and backgrounds and would normally have no intersection.”

The story follows Bai’s journey to Beijing where she encounters Tang Shuyin (played by Zhao Shuzhen), a lonely elderly woman. Their...

Canneseries Unveils Lineup, Including J.J. Abrams’ ‘Duster,’ ‘The Walking Dead: Dead City,’ ‘The Agency’
Image
J.J. Abrams’ Max period crime thriller “Duster,” AMC Networks’ “The Walking Dead: Dead City,” Season 2 and Paramount+ with Showtime’s “The Agency” will bow at this year’s Canneseries whose 2025 lineup belies naysayers who argued, without a parallel MipTV and the buyers it brought to Cannes, the French TV festival would fail to draw series or celebs of weight.

“Dead City” is a world premiere, “Duster” looks like one too – it’s slated to be made available on Max on May 15. Starring Michael Fassbender, “The Agency” bowed on Paramount+ on Nov. 29, but not in France where it’s hugely awaited as a U.S. makeover of milestone French spy thriller “The Bureau.”

Among stars expected to walk the Festival’s pink carpet are main jury president Norman Reedus, absolute star of “The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon.”

“Bridgerton’s” Nicola Coughlan, a Konbini Award recipient, will deliver a masterclass on April 28.

Throwback: Rajkummar Rao On His Total Immersion in 2017’s Trapped
Image
In this throwback interview, Subhash K Jha revisits the film and re-shares his conversation with Rajkummar Rao about the drama Trapped, which released in 2017.

What would you do if you were trapped in a highrise for days without food, water, or company? Eat a bird, although you are vegetarian? Check. Drink your own urine to quench your thirst? Check. Talk to a rat, for company’s sake? Check.

The talented Rajkummar Rao, no stranger to internalized performances, immerses himself in Vikram Motwane’s Trapped with such arresting authenticity that after a while, we cease to watch the skill that underlines the outstanding performance.

All we see is the suffering of the trapped soul, his desperation to get out of that apartment where Shourya is locked away, far from civilization, though not even a road away from the bustle. Unlike other great survival dramas like Robert Zemeckis’ Castaway or Ang Lee...

The news comes amid her NAACP Award nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Documentary for Luther: Never Too Much, her doc on the life and career of the iconic R&b singer Luther Vandross.

Highlighting the life and career of one of the most influential Black entertainers of the early 20th century, Nobody explores Williams’ extraordinary rise from Bahamian immigrant to central figure in America’s vaudeville circuit. His passion and talents were undeniable as he sang, danced, and pantomimed in clubs, cabarets, and theaters across the country. Williams became the first Black American to take a lead role on the Broadway stage and the best-selling Black recording artist before 1920. The show – which chronicles Finnbogadóttir’s journey from 1948, when she finished secondary school, up until her presidential election in 1980 – lands in Berlin off the back of a strong national run on pubcaster RÚV, where it premiered on Jan. 1.

Written and directed by brothers Sam and David Cutler-Kreutz, who Vimeo just recently added to their list of Breakout Creators of 2024, “A Lien” highlights the often traumatizing experience surrounding the path toward permanent residence in the United States, and the unseemly tactics the Immigration and Customs Enforcement uses in order to round up more detainees.

‘Black Warrant’ Netflix Review: Zahan Kapoor-Led Prison Drama Is Inconsistently Interesting
Image
Vikramaditya Motwane is one of the rare artists working in the Hindi film industry who doesn’t stick to one genre, both as a storyteller and a producer. His directorial debut was a coming-of-age film, Udaan. Then he switched gears to romance with Lootera, which happens to be one of my favorite love stories of all time. After that he locked his protagonist in a room in a high-rise apartment for Trapped. A few years later, while the superhero/vigilante genre was leaning towards CGI-heavy spectacle, Motwane took the grounded approach to talk about the water scarcity in Mumbai through Bhavesh Joshi Superhero. Simultaneously, he collaborated with Anurag Kashyap and set the bar for made-for-ott crime dramas with Sacred Games. He followed that up with an all-out action film, which doubled as a meta commentary on the parasocial relationship between stars and fans, titled Ak vs Ak. In 2023, he released Jubilee,...

It may sound weird to list the exit of a beloved character as being a highlight, but we're here to commend the way that Chicago Fire executed. Wallace Boden (Eamonn Walker) has been part of the show since day one, so it was...

Horror for the Holidays: 1980s Slashers ‘The Dorm That Dripped Blood’ and ‘Trapped Alive’
Image
As fall turns into winter, and a chill enters the air, horror fans begin to feast on their favorite holiday horrors. Black Christmas, Gremlins, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are all seasonal staples, and more contemporary offerings, such as Krampus and Better Watch Out, have become new classics. Yet for additional helpings of festive frights, perhaps the following double-feature could be considered; both The Dorm That Dripped Blood and Trapped Alive even hail from the decade where Christmas Horror, as a subgenre, began to take shape and resemble its more modern form.

The Dorm That Dripped Blood also goes by Pranks, The Third Night, and Death Dorm. The later title is what appears on the source print for Synapse Films’ uncut restoration, however, the longer name is what sticks best, even for those who have never seen this 1982 obscurity. And for a lot of folks who have watched the film,...

10 Best Villainess Manhwa of All Time, Ranked
Image
While manhwa are usually associated with action-packed power fantasies like Solo Leveling and Omniscient reader, the medium has plenty more to offer, with villainess manhwa being one of the most underrated genres. The villainess trope has quickly skyrocketed in popularity since its inception, almost becoming synonymous with the otome isekai genre, and it isn't hard to see why.

Antagonists are often considered to be the most compelling characters in a story, regardless of the medium in which they appear. As such, centering a story around the antagonist instead of the typical lead offers a nice change of pace while opening up new avenues of storytelling. This trend has taken root in the form of the "trashy Mc trope" in shonen manhwa, and the "villainess trope" in the case of shojo manhwa, and though such stories are a dime a dozen, a handful of villainess manhwa do stand out for their subversive stories and exceptional writing.

The project follows hot on the designer heels of David Beckham’s Fisher Stevens-directed Netflix docseries “Beckham,” which launched last year to critical acclaim and landed five Emmy nominations, winning outstanding documentary or nonfiction series. It also comes from David’s own Studio 99 production house (which was behind “Beckham”), which produces alongside Dorothy St. Pictures. The show is...

‘Fauda’ Banner Yes Studios to Grow International Slate, Kicking Off With Icelandic Series ‘Haze’ From ‘Trapped’ Co-Writer (Exclusive)
Image
Spearheading a new strategy to grow an international slate, Israel-based Yes Studios has picked up “Haze,” an Icelandic crime series produced and created by Sigurjón Kjartansson.

The eight-part drama stars Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, whose acting credits include “Succession” and “Game of Thrones.”

Produced by Kjartansson’s banner S800, “Haze” has already been commissioned by Icelandic broadcaster Ruv. Filming will begin this Summer for an expected delivery in 2026.

Yes Studios has boarded international distribution rights for the series and also holds rights for the scripted format. The company will formally launch the series to buyers at next week’s Content London where it’s expected to kick off pre-sales.

Kjartansson previously co-wrote and executive produced some of Iceland’s biggest titles, “Trapped” and “Katla,” both helmed by Baltasar Kormákur. For “Haze,” he has assembled a topnotch creative team, including producer Erlinger Jack Gudmundsson, writers Gagga Jonsdottir (“Trapped”) and David Mar Stefansson...

Manisha Koirala, Vikramaditya Motwane Talk Convergence of Streaming and Theatrical at International Film Festival of India
Image
Celebrated actor Manisha Koirala and filmmaker Vikramaditya Motwane discussed the evolving landscape between theatrical and streaming platforms during a session at the International Film Festival of India (Iffi) in Goa, where Koirala also revealed plans to write a comedy book about 1990s and 2000s actresses adapting to Gen Z culture.

“For me as an actor, be it for the big screen or web series, it’s the same amount of work that is needed, sincerity needed. The preparation, mind frame, everything is the same,” said Koirala, who recently starred in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s hit Netflix series “Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar.”

Motwane, who directed Prime Video’s “Jubilee” and Netflix’s “Sacred Games,” noted that streaming offers more creative flexibility. “The wonderful part of streaming is that you’re not stuck to saying with theatrical that okay, you have to make a movie two to two and a half hours.

‘Luther: Never Too Much’ Director Dawn Porter Wants to Re-Introduce a Musical Genius to the Masses
Image
“What? There’s no Luther doc?,” asked award-winning documentarian Dawn Porter upon meeting with Sony Music to discuss which artists from their catalog deserved their own film. Anyone familiar with R&b icon Luther Vandross would be just as surprised, as his music remains prevalent two decades after his death, yet his personal life is forever shrouded by unanswered questions about his personal life. “He’s the most famous singer a lot of people don’t know,” said the director to IndieWire ahead of a screening of her new film “Luther: Never Too Much” at the Virginia Film Festival 2024 where it won the Audience Award for Documentary.

Though Porter had not come into said Sony meeting with an idea of who she specifically wanted to make a film about, the director of acclaimed projects like “Trapped,” “John Lewis: Good Trouble,” and “Deadlocked: How America Shaped the Supreme Court” — which all...

Image
It appears that Charlize Theron is not ready to settle down with someone unless it’s Guillermo from Jimmy Kimmel Live!. Apart from the comedic skit she pulled off earlier this year, she has only mentioned being married in one another instance in her life. She and her then-boyfriend Stuart Townsend used to call each other husband and wife in the late 2000s when their relationship was at its peak.

The two actors met each other on sets of Trapped and beat all the odds to stay in a long relationship for ten years. However, the couple’s busy film schedule caught up to them and they eventually parted ways. The relationship devastated her, making her reconsider her stance on settling down.

Do You Remember These 30+ USA Network Original Horror Movies Released from 1989-2004?
Image
Before USA Network became series-focused, the cable channel delivered a steady stream of weekly original movies. Many of which were produced by McA (now NBCUniversal). And during this era — between the late 1980s and early 2000s — USA offered a variety of genres; action and suspense were the most common, but horror also came up from time to time.

Especially around Halloween.

USA Network is no longer in the business of airing these “World Premiere Movies,” horror or otherwise, and there haven’t been great strides to bring all of them to streaming or modern home video. However, the horror entries certainly have their merits as well as fans.

See if you can remember these original movies from USA Network’s horror history.

Maia Mitchell's 10 Best Movies And TV Shows
Image
Maia Mitchell was born and raised in Australia, though some fans might not realize it, since so many of her most popular projects have been produced in America and have her donning a different accent. Her big break was through Australian television in shows aimed at kids and families, and that trend allowed her to break through to a worldwide audience on the Disney Channel.

Mitchell has spent a lot of her professional acting career in the United States, but in 2022 she returned to Australia when the nation was experiencing a flooding crisis. Since then, shes been an advocate for combating climate change, something she speaks on in between acting jobs. On the way, shes got a few thrillers and horror projects, including the adaptation of the video game Until Dawn, but these projects are her best so far.

Webtoon's Hot New Villainess Manhwa Is Perfect for K-Drama Fans
Image
Trapped in a Soap Opera is the latest hit manhwa to get officially localized on Webtoon for English-language readers, and as expected, it channels K-drama appeal into a gorgeously drawn webcomic. The story follows Jia Han, craving an easy life, as she indulges her passion for cheesy Korean soap operas, a problem relatable for any reader. However, the premise of being suddenly sucked into a K-drama is certainly more outlandish, putting a modern spin on the popular otome isekai craze sweeping manhwa readers in Trapped in a Soap Opera.

The first seven free chapters of Trapped in a Soap Opera dropped on Webtoon on September 3, 2024, with new chapters every Wednesday. The story is written by Apricot.K and drawn by Ganno. It boasts radiant colors, remarkable depth, detailed backgrounds, and gorgeous characters vying for the spotlight while having strongly varied traits and backstories. It makes for an exciting read, as...

Disney Leads with R-Rated Fox Franchises as ‘Alien’ and ‘Deadpool’ Sequels Rule the Box Office
Image
An unexpectedly strong August continues with the usual (Disney films lead the way) and the unusual (both are R-rated). They’re also a testament to M&a strategy: Both are franchises that Disney acquired from 20th Century-Fox.

Nearly a half century after the Ridley Scott original, “Alien: Romulus” opened at #1 with $41.5 million, and “Deadpool & Wolverine” is #2 with $29 million. Both characters were assets Disney acquired in its $71.8 billion 2019 takeover of the Hollywood legacy studio, Fox.

That synergy extends to “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” the sixth-biggest film of this summer. Throw in “The First Omen” and a reissue of “The Phantom Menace,” and Fox content has provided $825 million of Disney’s $1.467 billion industry-leading gross so far this year.

With three films in the top 10 (#8 is “Inside Out” from Pixar with its $642 million to date) and the distributor represents nearly 54 percent of the weekend’s gross. Its return to dominance...

Netflix has unveiled a deep slate of originals out of Argentina including an animated adaptation of iconic comic strip Mafalda from Oscar-winning director Juan José Campanella. Another adaptation is El Eternauta, based on the graphic novel of the same name. There will also be a local version of dating series Love is Blind and a three-part doc about Argentine soccer star Ángel Di María.

The streamer’s Made In Argentina slate was presented at an event in Buenos Aires and comprised a whopping 19 projects. The standout titles included Mafalda, which has iconic status in Argentina where it ran as a comic strip in various newspapers. Created by cartoonist Quino, it follows the titular little girl and her family and friends.

Campanella, who helmed the Oscar-winning The Secret In Their Eyes (Best Foreign Language Film), will be director, screenwriter and showrunner. Mundoloco CGI, the animation studio he co-founded, is producing the series.

Netflix Unveils 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ Lineup: Beloved Comic Strip Character Mafalda Gets Series Treatment, Ricardo Darín Touts Drama ‘The Eternaut’
Image
Buenos Aires – Mafalda, the beloved and wily six-year-old drawn into acclaim by celebrated Argentine artist Quino, will bring her socially-conscious hijinks to the screen. News of the adaptation, which will be ushered in by Oscar-winner Juan José Campanella, was announced Monday evening as Netflix unveiled their 2024 ‘Made in Argentina’ slate to a spirited crowd of industry and media professionals.

Campanella will direct, produce and showrun the project, while Gastón Gorali co-pens and acts as general producer of the Netflix Original series and Sergio Fernández boards as production director. Netflix and Campanella and Gorali’s Mundoloco CGI, the studio behind “Metegol,” the largest Latin American animated production to date, produce.

“Mafalda and her friends not only made me laugh a lot, but from time to time, they sent me to the dictionary. And each new word I learned came with the reward of a new laugh,” Campanella revealed in a July statement.

‘The Tourist’s’ Ólafur Darri, ‘See’s’ Hera Hilmar to Star in ‘Reykjavik Fusion,’ from Act 4, Wild Sheep Content, Arte (Exclusive)
Image
Internationally celebrated Icelandic actors Ólafur Darri Ólafsson and Hera Hilmar are set to star in “Reykjavik Fusion,” an Iceland-set crime thriller series that is rapidly racking up pre-sales in multiple territories.

The series’ deals underscore an increasingly attractive financing model, at least for selectively produced foreign-language shows, based on tying down partners and pre-sales among local broadcasters in Europe rather than waiting for a U.S. deal with a streamer for the U.S.

“It’s a dynamic ecosystem in Europe right now, full of potential partners,” said Erik Barmack, whose Wild Sheep Content co-produces and handles the international distribution of “Reykjavik Fusion.”

A familiar hirsute face and huge body for international audiences, Ólafur Darri is known for “The Tourist,” “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” and “True Detective.” He has also played the lead in Icelandic export hits “Trapped” and “The Minister.”

Hilmar starred in Peter Jackson’s “Mortal Engines...

Egill Ólafsson, Kôki, and Palmi Kormákur in Touch (2024)
Action Maestro Baltasar Kormákur Returned Home and Leaned on His Family to Make the Sprawling Romantic Drama ‘Touch’
Egill Ólafsson, Kôki, and Palmi Kormákur in Touch (2024)
Icelandic actor/director Baltasar Kormákur is a member of a growing cadre of international filmmakers who make films at home as well as Hollywood. Kormákur is best known for studio action adventures such as “Contraband” (2012), his remake of his 2000 breakout “101 Reykjavik.” Producer/star Mark Wahlberg took a shine to the rugged director, and went on to make another film with him, the $80-million actioner “2 Guns” (2013), co-starring Denzel Washington.

Accustomed to weathering harsh conditions while directing such films as the International Oscar-shortlisted survival film “The Deep” (2013), Kormákur used many tricks in his filmmaking arsenal for Jake Gyllenhaal starrer “Everest” (2015), blending a subzero soundstage with vertiginous ladders, real snow, location footage in the Dolomites, and CGI extensions.

But like many Hollywood imports, he returned to his own country to start a production company and live a double life. He makes some projects in Hollywood (2022’s “Beast” starring Idris Elba), and...

Mother, Couch Review | Surrealist & Star-Studded Dramedy with No Answers
Image
Mother, Couch is an absurdist dramedy that asks more questions than it answers. You have to be curious and adventurous for this film, unlike most viewers. The film evokes the theater of the absurd and is unique enough to appeal to arthouse cinephiles. Strong lead performances from a stacked cast ultimately don't amount to much as the story takes a fever dream turn, leaving some audiences bewildered.

Three estranged half-siblings face a family crisis when their horrible mother refuses to leave a bankrupt furniture store. Mother, Couch sports an all-star cast in a surrealist dramedy that leaves many questions purposely unanswered. Strong lead performances by Ewan McGregor and a venomous Ellen Burstyn don't amount to much in the end. The film evokes the theater of the absurd, with a head-scratching response when the narrative goes bonkers. What begins as relatively straightforward takes a fever dream turn that pushes weird off a cliff.

I Cant Believe The Friday The 13th Prequel Show Robbed Us Of Charlize Theron As Jason Voorhees' Mom
Image
Charlize Theron was considered for A24's Friday the 13th series as Pamela Voorhees, but the project was put on hold. Bryan Fuller was dismissed from the project due to behind-the-scenes complications, causing the development to halt. A24 is still committed to making the show, but it's uncertain if the original Fuller scripts will be used.

A24's curbed Friday the 13th series would have given us Charlize Theron as the mother of Jason Voorhees. Development on the highly anticipated prequel series titled Crystal Lake was reportedly stopped in May 2024, which is a major loss for fans of classic Jason Voorhees films and the horror genre at large. Although the original Friday the 13th movie from 1980 essentially acts as the prequel to the franchise, I'm sold on just about anything that involves A24 and horror, so having the project come to an indefinite halt is certainly not inspiring to hear.

‘Touch’ Trailer: Baltasar Kormákur’s Epic Romance Spans Half a Century Looking for a Lost Love
Image
Baltasar Kormákur is back directing — but this time it’s not a survival drama, it’s a romance.

The “Adrift” and “Everest” filmmaker directs Focus Features’ “Touch,” based on the bestselling novel by Ólafur Jóhann Ólafsson. The film tells a romantic and thrilling story that spans several decades and continents, with one widower trying to find his first love who disappeared 50 years ago.

Director Kormákur co-wrote the screenplay with novelist Ólafsson. The original Icelandic novel was published by Ecco/Harper Collins in the U.S. in August 2022. The film was shot in Iceland and Japan.

The ensemble cast is led by Egill Ólafsson, Kōki, Pálmi Kormákur, Masahiro Motoki, Yoko Narahashi, Meg Kubota, and Tatsuya Tagawa, with Charles Nishikawa, Sigurður Ingvarsson, Benedikt Erlingsson, Kieran Buckeridge, Ruth Sheen, María Ellingsen, and Masatoshi Nakamura also starring.

Bruce Springsteen Treats Columbus, Ohio to Epic 30-Song Set Full of Surprises
Image
There have already been several high points on Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band’s 2024 tour, and Sunday night’s show in Columbus, Ohio, provided another one.

The Boss and co. turned in an epic three-hour, 30-song set that saw “Youngstown,” “Streets of Fire,” and “I’m Goin’ Down” all performed live for the first time since at least 2017. The choice to kick off the show with “Youngstown” was especially appropriate as it was written about Youngstown, Ohio, located just two-and-half hours away from Columbus. Meanwhile, “Streets of Fire” has only been performed by Springsteen 23 times since 1978, and not since 2017.

The setlist also included “Racing in the Street,” which was played thanks to a sign request. Springsteen and the E Street Band wrapped the show with an epic nine-song run that included (in order): “The Rising,” “Badlands,” “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run,” “Rosalita,...
