Bleecker Street has nabbed U.S. rights to “Bone Lake,” a darkly comedic survival thriller from director Mercedes Bryce Morgan.

The film, which premiered at Fantastic Fest in 2024, will land in theaters on Oct. 10. Mister Smith, a British distribution company, has come on board to represent the international rights, which will launch at Cannes Film Festival.

“Bone Lake” follows a couple whose romantic vacation at a secluded lakeside estate is upended when they’re forced to share the mansion with another mysterious couple. Their dream getaway spirals into a “nightmarish maze of sex, lies and manipulation, bringing terrifying secrets to light and triggering a bloody battle for survival,” according to the official logline. Marco Pigossi, Maddie Hasson, Alex Roe and Andra Nechita star in the film.

Timothée Chalamet has become a very big deal over the last decade or so. With two Academy Award nominations and an ever-expanding list of excellent movies under his belt, the actor has flaunted his talent in a vast array of roles that range from playing Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown" (2024) to starring as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies and following Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in portraying eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka in "Wonka" (2023). That's a lot, especially from a young actor who seems destined to turn in great roles for many decades to come.

Any one of Chalamet's best movies is a great way for a movie fan to spend a couple of hours glued to their seat. However, few prolific actors can maintain a perfect win record throughout their career, and even one as wildly successful as Chalamet has a few less than beloved films in his CV.

It has been well over two years since “Magazine Dreams” made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Following its premiere, the movie received largely mixed reviews but most critics were quick to heap praise on the performance given by its star, Jonathan Majors. It was subsequently picked up by Searchlight Pictures, which originally slated it to be released on December 8, 2023 — likely targeting a potential awards campaign for Majors.

The actor was caught up, however, in a domestic assault scandal in March 2023 that tarnished his previously shining, fast-rising star profile. Searchlight later dropped “Magazine Dreams,” reportedly due to both Majors’ assault case and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Briarcliff Entertainment has since acquired the film’s distribution rights, though, and it is now on the verge of finally being released.

Directed by James Mangold, and co-starring Ed Norton, Elle Fanning, and Scoot McNairy, the movie will release Christmas Day in the United States and has already generated significant Oscar buzz. It covers Dylan's career beginnings in 1961, up to his infamous 1965 gig at Newport Folk Festival where he controversially played for the first time with electric instruments. Bob Dylan has no qualms about Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of him in James Mangold’s upcoming A Complete Unknown.

“There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!),” Dylan wrote on social media on Wednesday. “Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”

Mangold’s film is set in the summer of 1961, when a 19-year-old Dylan arrived in New York City from Minnesota with little else than his guitar. The movie is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! In a new interview with Zane Lowe promoting his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown for the first time, the Oscar nominee said he related to certain outsider elements the legendary musician contained, as he’s been somewhat typecast for roles.

“I’ve had a life experience, I don’t want to say it’s weird, but I can relate to some of these things he went through,” he explained. “Bob wanted to be a rock & roll star — Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Elvis Presley — that was the sort of, depending on your point of view, the sort of rice crispy pop, rock & roll music that was saturated and marketed to kids in the late ’50s. Equally, I wanted to be a big movie actor.”

After helping leading Longlegs to box-office success this past summer, Maika Monroe is ready to star in another iconic horror thriller as she is set to star in 20th Century’s new take on the 1992 classic The Hand That Rocks the Cradle. Michelle Garza Cervera will direct the pic with Micah Bloomberg penning the script.

The original film starred Rebecca De Mornay and Annabella Sciorra and follows a woman, played by De Mornay, who after her sex offender husband gets caught in the act and kills himself, embarks on a mission of vengeance against one of her husband’s victims and the woman’s family. Monroe will step into the role made famous by De Mornay while the other role originally played by Sciorra is still open.

Award-winning studio Neon has announced They Follow, the long awaited sequel to the modern horror classic It Follows (2014), from visionary writer/director David Robert Mitchell and starring Maika Monroe. Bloody Disgusting has learned that Monroe will reprise her role of Jay Height, which earned her an Empire Award® nomination for It Follows.

In the first movie, Monroe’s Jay Height is a young woman followed by an unknown supernatural force after a sexual encounter. In 2024, the threat is now Everywhere.

Exclusive: After bringing Searchlight Pictures its strongest limited opening since 2019 Oscar winner Jojo Rabbit with the acclaimed musical comedy Theater Camp, Topic Studios has announced an expansion of its creative ranks with the appointment of Jasmine Daghighian to the newly created role of Vice President of Film.

Daghighian comes to Topic from 500 Blows, the production company of Frankie Shaw and Zach Strauss fka Our Lady Productions, and in her new position will help build out the studio’s slate on the film side, shepherding projects from development through completion. She’ll be based out of the company’s NYC headquarters, reporting to Executive Vice President, Film and Documentary, Ryan Heller.

TLC is one of the greatest girl groups in history. The Atlanta-based trio, made up of Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins, Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes, and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas, rose to stardom during the 1990s after releasing their platinum debut single, "Ain't 2 Proud 2 Beg," which received a 1993 Grammy nomination for best R&b song. Following an intense bidding war to land the stunning bodybuilding drama Magazine Dreams, Searchlight has officially set a December 8 theatrical release for the Jonathan Majors-led film. Written and directed by Elijah Bynum as the follow-up to his 2017 directorial debut film Hot Summer Nights, it stars Majors as a troubled bodybuilder with aspirations of stardom who struggles with human connection in his climb toward greatness.

Searchlight Pictures has set a year-end release date for the Jonathan Majors-starring bodybuilder drama Magazine Dreams.

Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s feature will hit theaters on Dec. 8, 2023, at the height of the awards season when Majors would be in the running for a best actor nomination. Magazine Dreams earned strong reviews when it bowed at Sundance, after which Searchlight picked up the feature.

Majors plays Killian Maddox, a man determined to make it in the world of bodybuilding even as he faces a number of struggles, from dealing with feelings of alienation to anger issues, and looking after his ailing grandfather.

Bynum wrote and directed the feature. He previously made Hot Summer Nights, starring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, which was released by A24 after a South by Southwest debut.

Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige and Mike O’Hearn also star in Magazine Dreams, which is produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy and Jeffrey Soros.

Searchlight Pictures is dreaming of Jonathan Majors. The studio has acquired the actor’s body-building feature Magazine Dreams, which earned strong reviews last month at Sundance.

Majors plays Killian Maddox, a man determined to make it in the world of body building even as he faces a number of struggles, from dealing with feelings of alienation, anger issues and looking after his ailing grandfather.

Elijah Bynum wrote and directed the feature. He previously made Hot Summer Nights, starring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, which was released by A24 after a South by Southwest debut.

“We are very proud to bring Elijah’s powerful film to the world,” said Searchlight presidents Matthew Greenfield and David Greenbaum. “Jonathan’s tour-de-force performance, both physically and emotionally, affected us in profound ways.”

Elijah Bynum didn’t want to look the man in the eye. No one at the gym did. He was massive, a bodybuilder who inspired fear because of his size.

“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.

It was relatively early in the pandemic. Bynum had been thinking a lot about isolation, and wanted to craft a character forgotten by society. When he saw how people avoided this bodybuilder, something clicked: “You have an individual who is both feared and invisible — because of everyone around him. And I thought it was a really peculiar way for someone to move through the world.”

Review: Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams offers star Jonathan Majors his meatiest role to date. Undergoing a massive transformation that saw him change his body into that of a professional-level bodybuilder, his Killian Maddox is reminiscent of the roles Robert De Niro famously played by Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy both famously inspired Todd Phillips’ Joker (we recently did a Face Off comparing Joker to Taxi Driver), and Bynum’s inspirations seem similar. Yet, as often as we’ve seen this type of role played by white actors, it’s relatively rare for a black actor to dig his teeth into material like this. His race shakes up the formula, making the character a distinct creation for Bynum and Majors.

The Sundance Film Festival-hosted world premiere Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams may have gotten off to a bumpy start as traffic delays and festival congestion in Park City caused the film to start 45 minutes late. But after the credits rolled and the lights came up, its star Jonathan Majors faced the Eccles Theatre audience and received an electric standing ovation.

In what many are calling a brutal and fully committed performance, Majors stars as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder who sacrifices health, both mental and physical, to pursue a dream of superstardom while he struggles to maintain control of a volatile temper.

The official fest synopsis calls the film “a provocative film that respects the dignity of its protagonist as it pulls no punches in portraying the most physically and emotionally painful moments of his darkening odyssey.” Those who caught the screening were quick to describe it as Taxi Driver.

When an independent filmmaker wants to hypnotize an audience, show off his chops, and make a grand statement, a surefire way to do it — at least if he has the talent ­— is to create his own version of a “Pulp Fiction”-meets-“Boogie Nights” violence-hanging-in-the-air climax set to a succulent needle drop. It’s been three years since cinephiles have made their otherwise annual pilgrimage to the Eccles Theater, but the Sundance Film Festival is back! Following up his acclaimed turn as the first African-American naval pilot Jesse Brown in J.D. Dillard’s “Devotion” with two blockbuster roles (“Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania” and “Creed III”) and a potential indie breakout that’s premiering at the festival, Jonathan Majors is having a moment.

While Timothée Chalamet hasn't been around for too long, he has certainly made an impact on the film world. 2017 was a breakout year for the 23-year-old American actor, as he starred in Lady Bird, Hostiles, and Call Me By Your Name. His role in Call Me By Your Name also earned him an Oscar nomination, making him the third-youngest actor to have ever been nominated for the coveted award. The directors will be profiled in the first print edition of the new year, timed to an event in their honor at the Palm Springs Int’l Film Festival in early January.

The lineup represents a diverse mix of up-and-coming directors whose films — all first or second narrative features — distinguished themselves earlier this year on the festival circuit or else are set to premiere in 2023.

October is here, which means a bevy of new titles available to watch on HBO and HBO Max. First and foremost, however, we have the highly anticipated “The White Lotus” Season 2, which debuts on Oct. 30 on HBO and will be streaming on HBO Max at the same time. New location, new characters (save for Jennifer Coolidge from Season 1), same music.

Also new this month is the docuseries follow-up “The Vow: Part Two,” further exploring the inner sanctum of Nxivm, which debuts on Oct. 17 on HBO and is streaming on HBO Max the same night. There’s also “Avenue 5” Season 2 on Oct. 10 and the new Chip and Joanna Gaines series “Fixer Upper: The Castle” on Oct. 14 (that one will also debut on Magnolia Network and discovery+ at the same time).

Other noteworthy additions this month include library titles like “Nightcrawler,” “The Witch,” “Terms of Endearment” and the underseen comedy gem “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.

The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.

Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

The female-driven crime drama Cadejo Blanco has unveiled a clip in advance of its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Industry Selects section. Cadejo Blanco is reminiscent of Maria Full of Grace and Miss Bala, addressing timely issues of lack of opportunities for women, youth violence, and indiscriminate crime in Guatemala. Writer/director Justin Lerner spent years in Guatemala interviewing young people with gang affiliations, collecting their life stories. For authenticity, he cast his interview subjects to play themselves in the film, and then spent a year doing acting workshops with them. He encouraged each actor to revise the script as they saw necessary, even during shooting, a process that allowed the non-professional cast to ensure their stories were being properly represented on screen.

Exclusive: Inbar Lavi and Jack Kesy have signed on to star in Vronika, a psychological thriller from writer/director Geert Heetebrij.

Heetebrij’s debut feature centers on strong-willed Roni (Lavi) and her ambitious husband Stephen (Kesy), a stay-at-home crypto-currency day trader who manifests a twin version of his wife named Vronika (also played by Lavi), to assist him in winning trades.

Vronika is being exec produced by Sid Jansma, Jr. and Kelly James Clark with Wolverine Films in cooperation with producers Eric Machiela, Zach Runge, and Ross Vande Waa of Grla. Pic is currently in production, filming in locations throughout West Michigan.
