Timothée Chalamet has become a very big deal over the last decade or so. With two Academy Award nominations and an ever-expanding list of excellent movies under his belt, the actor has flaunted his talent in a vast array of roles that range from playing Bob Dylan in "A Complete Unknown" (2024) to starring as Paul Atreides in Denis Villeneuve's "Dune" movies and following Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp in portraying eccentric chocolatier Willy Wonka in "Wonka" (2023). That's a lot, especially from a young actor who seems destined to turn in great roles for many decades to come.
Any one of Chalamet's best movies is a great way for a movie fan to spend a couple of hours glued to their seat. However, few prolific actors can maintain a perfect win record throughout their career, and even one as wildly successful as Chalamet has a few less than beloved films in his CV.

It has been well over two years since “Magazine Dreams” made its world premiere at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival. Following its premiere, the movie received largely mixed reviews but most critics were quick to heap praise on the performance given by its star, Jonathan Majors. It was subsequently picked up by Searchlight Pictures, which originally slated it to be released on December 8, 2023 — likely targeting a potential awards campaign for Majors.
The actor was caught up, however, in a domestic assault scandal in March 2023 that tarnished his previously shining, fast-rising star profile. Searchlight later dropped “Magazine Dreams,” reportedly due to both Majors’ assault case and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Briarcliff Entertainment has since acquired the film’s distribution rights, though, and it is now on the verge of finally being released.

Let’s get this out of the way first: In December 2023, actor Jonathan Majors was found guilty on two of four charges in a domestic violence case involving ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari — assault in the third degree and harassment in the second degree — and sentenced to 52 weeks in a domestic violence intervention program. After Marvel Studios made the controversial decision to fire him, Searchlight Pictures announced it would no longer release writer-director Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams, in which Majors earned raves at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival.
Cut to 2025 and Majors has paid his debt to society, and the daredevils at Briarcliff Entertainment have picked up Magazine Dreams for U.S. distribution. Whatever your stance is on the actor, there is no denying that Majors' stunning turn as a rage-filled bodybuilder in Magazine Dreams is so transfixing that it’s only a stone’s throw away from iconic performances by Robert De Niro...

Whatever you think of Jonathan Majors, it's impossible to ignore his searing talent, from The Last Black Man in San Francisco and Lovecraft County to his upcoming film, Magazine Dreams, which features Majors as you've never seen him before. While the film debuted out of Sundance two years ago to rave reviews (and won the US Dramatic Special Jury Award for Creative Vision award), it is only now getting theatrical distribution, likely due to the events which led to Majors' being controversially dropped from the MCU, ultimately changing its trajectory in the process. Out March 21 from Briarcliff Entertainment, Magazine Dreams has Majors giving perhaps his most intense performance to date. Check out a clip from the film above.

Jonathan Majors’ violent bodybuilding drama “Magazine Dreams” has received its first trailer, after the actor was convicted of assaulting his ex-girlfriend and the film was temporarily shelved. It will now release in theaters on March 21 from Briarcliff Entertainment.
In the film, Majors plays amateur bodybuilder Killian Maddox, who aspires to make a name for himself within the violent world of bodybuilding. However, to the detriment of his physical and mental health, he continues to strive to become a star, as he continues to go against doctors’ orders and grapple with his peers.
While “Magazine Dreams” was met with buzz after its debut at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, sparking a bidding war that led the film to find a home at Searchlight Pictures for a reported mid-seven figures, the distributor dropped the film in January 2024 after Majors was accused of domestic violence against his ex-girlfriend Grace Jabbari.

2024 was a pretty good year for vampire films, what with the release of hits such as Abigail, Salem’s Lot, and the upcoming Nosferatu. It seems the fun will continue into 2025 thanks to Neon, who has just picked up the Dracula-inspired movie Brides, which stars a familiar face we’ve come to know and love in the horror genre: Maika Monroe.
Per Deadline, Monroe is set to lead Brides, which is said to be loosely inspired by Bram Stoker’s seminal 1887 novel. Written and directed by Chloe Okuno, filming is expected to get underway in March, and will be the second pairing of the two following Okuno’s vastly underrated 2022 psychological thriller, Watcher, which also featured Monroe in the lead. Based on the synopsis alone, this one sounds like it’s going to be a lot of fun when it hits theaters, as it flips Stoker’s narrative on its...

Bob Dylan has no qualms about Timothée Chalamet’s portrayal of him in James Mangold’s upcoming A Complete Unknown.
“There’s a movie about me opening soon called A Complete Unknown (what a title!),” Dylan wrote on social media on Wednesday. “Timothee Chalamet is starring in the lead role. Timmy’s a brilliant actor so I’m sure he’s going to be completely believable as me. Or a younger me. Or some other me.”
Mangold’s film is set in the summer of 1961, when a 19-year-old Dylan arrived in New York City from Minnesota with little else than his guitar. The movie is based on the 2015 book Dylan Goes Electric! Newport, Seeger, Dylan, and the Night That Split the Sixties by Elijah Wald, which explores the controversy surrounding Dylan’s switch to electrically amplified instrumentation.
Dylan wrote on Wednesday that the book is “a fantastic retelling of events...

While reflecting on his career, Timothée Chalamet said there were certain doors that were closed to him in the industry based on his looks.
In a new interview with Zane Lowe promoting his Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown for the first time, the Oscar nominee said he related to certain outsider elements the legendary musician contained, as he’s been somewhat typecast for roles.
“I’ve had a life experience, I don’t want to say it’s weird, but I can relate to some of these things he went through,” he explained. “Bob wanted to be a rock & roll star — Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Elvis Presley — that was the sort of, depending on your point of view, the sort of rice crispy pop, rock & roll music that was saturated and marketed to kids in the late ’50s. Equally, I wanted to be a big movie actor.”

Timothée Chalamet once had an agent tell him he needed to gain weight, the actor recalled this week. Though weird at the time, memories of the experience helped Chalamet prepare to play Bob Dylan in James Mangold’s upcoming A Complete Unknown.

Though he may not have become the face of any dystopian teen dramas that peppered the 2010s, Chalamet’s career turned out to be just fine. Now, as he prepares for the release of A Complete Unknown next month, the actor says his experience felt...

Written and directed by Osgood Perkins, the film has garnered rave reviews from critics and fans since its release on July 12.
Longlegs follows the chilling story of an FBI agent, portrayed by Monroe, tasked with tracking down an occultist serial killer responsible for multiple family murders across America.
These heinous acts occur without the killer’s physical presence at the crime scenes.

The film is being hyped as one of the scariest in years, but Monroe joked that it wasn't scary, and they had a lot of fun on set. With a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, Longlegs is expected to be a sleeper hit, making its theatrical debut on July 12, 2024.
The upcoming film Longlegs by director Osgood Perkins is already garnering a lot of buzz, thanks in part to the seemingly gruesome appearance of star Nicolas Cage, which has been kept under wraps thus far. To further increase the hype, Neon has released a new video which shows Cages co-star, Maika Monroe, reacting to his character for the first time in a chilling bit of promotional material.

Although Hollywood’s emphasis on continuing long-standing franchises and increasing streaming content has led to less emphasis on developing new movie stars, Timothée Chalamet has established himself as one of the true icons of his generation. Although Chalamet proved that he was interested in challenging material from acclaimed filmmakers with Lady Bird and his Oscar-nominated work in Call Me By Your Name, the overwhelming critical and commercial success of Wonka and the Dune films has landed Chalamet a major deal to develop upcoming projects. While it will be exciting to see which route his career takes next, Chalamet got one of his earliest starring roles in the underrated A24 neo-noir thriller Hot Summer Nights.

On December 16, actor Timothée Chalamet and producer Ryan Friedkin went to a basketball game between the Los Angeles Clippers and the New York Knicks at Crypto.com Arena.
Chalamet donned a backward blue ball cap, baggy pants, and a sweater with bookshelves, while Friedkin wore a casual blue long-sleeve and jeans.
Chalamet and Friedkin met when they worked on the Neo-noir coming-of-age crime drama Hot Summer Nights in 2017. Chalamet starred in the movie as an awkward teenage boy who becomes entangled in the world of drug trade.
Chalamet’s Wonka hit theaters on December 15 and has a favorable start and benefits from the holiday season’s momentum. While December releases typically don’t achieve massive opening weekends, they often exhibit longevity in theaters and maintain traction well into the new year.
Wonka has received an “A-” CinemaScore from audiences, and critics have granted the film an 83% “fresh” rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

Has there ever been a rise and fall quite as swift and dramatic as that of Jonathan Majors? 2023 started off as a killer year for Majors. After years as an up-and-comer, he had three films set to debut within the first three months of the year. His two big studio films, Ant-Man & the Wasp: Quantumania and Creed III, seemed poised to make him a real-deal movie star, while his indie film, Magazine Dreams, was going to serve as an acting showcase.
Indeed, when the film debuted last January at Sundance, many believed his tortured, Travis Bickle-like role would win him an Oscar nomination (I was one of them in my review). His character, Killian Maddox, a wanna-be bodybuilder with serious anger issues, was a distinct creation for him and director Elijah Bynum. The movie quickly sold to Fox Searchlight, and a December 2023 release date was set. Everyone assumed...

TLC is one of the greatest girl groups in history. Following their initial success, TLC sent nine of their singles to the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 chart - four of which went No. 1: "Creep," "Waterfalls," "No Scrubs," and "Unpretty."

Following an intense bidding war to land the stunning bodybuilding drama Magazine Dreams, Searchlight has officially set a December 8 theatrical release for the Jonathan Majors-led film. Written and directed by Elijah Bynum as the follow-up to his 2017 directorial debut film Hot Summer Nights, it stars Majors as a troubled bodybuilder with aspirations of stardom who struggles with human connection in his climb toward greatness.

Searchlight Pictures has set a year-end release date for the Jonathan Majors-starring bodybuilder drama Magazine Dreams.
Writer-director Elijah Bynum’s feature will hit theaters on Dec. 8, 2023, at the height of the awards season when Majors would be in the running for a best actor nomination. Magazine Dreams earned strong reviews when it bowed at Sundance, after which Searchlight picked up the feature.
Majors plays Killian Maddox, a man determined to make it in the world of bodybuilding even as he faces a number of struggles, from dealing with feelings of alienation to anger issues, and looking after his ailing grandfather.
Bynum wrote and directed the feature. He previously made Hot Summer Nights, starring Timothée Chalamet and Maika Monroe, which was released by A24 after a South by Southwest debut.
Haley Bennett, Taylour Paige and Mike O’Hearn also star in Magazine Dreams, which is produced by Jennifer Fox, Dan Gilroy and Jeffrey Soros.

Elijah Bynum didn’t want to look the man in the eye. No one at the gym did. He was massive, a bodybuilder who inspired fear because of his size.
“No one wanted to be caught in his path, I think because he made us uncomfortable,” says Bynum of the feeling of his fellow gym patrons.
It was relatively early in the pandemic. Bynum had been thinking a lot about isolation, and wanted to craft a character forgotten by society. When he saw how people avoided this bodybuilder, something clicked: “You have an individual who is both feared and invisible — because of everyone around him. And I thought it was a really peculiar way for someone to move through the world.”

Obsession can drive a man insane. No doubt about that. This riveting character study explores the intensity that comes with obsession, and how striving for perfection can ruin someone. Magazine Dreams is the second feature film written and directed by up-and-coming filmmaker Elijah Bynum, following his 2017 film Hot Summer Nights (which came out of SXSW). After screening during the first weekend at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, this has become one of the most talked about films at the entire fest. Everyone has something to say. It's being discussed so much not because it's the best film at the fest, but because it's one of those films that everyone must talk about - whether it's the lead performance from Jonathan Majors, the uncomfortable story it tells, or the brutality and intensity of what happens, or whether or not it's actually a good film, and how could it be better. Plot: An amateur bodybuilder (Jonathan Majors) struggles with severe psychological issues while dreaming of stardom.
Review: Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams offers star Jonathan Majors his meatiest role to date. Undergoing a massive transformation that saw him change his body into that of a professional-level bodybuilder, his Killian Maddox is reminiscent of the roles Robert De Niro famously played by Martin Scorsese. Taxi Driver and The King of Comedy both famously inspired Todd Phillips’ Joker (we recently did a Face Off comparing Joker to Taxi Driver), and Bynum’s inspirations seem similar. Yet, as often as we’ve seen this type of role played by white actors, it’s relatively rare for a black actor to dig his teeth into material like this. His race shakes up the formula, making the character a distinct creation for Bynum and Majors.

The Sundance Film Festival-hosted world premiere Elijah Bynum’s Magazine Dreams may have gotten off to a bumpy start as traffic delays and festival congestion in Park City caused the film to start 45 minutes late. But after the credits rolled and the lights came up, its star Jonathan Majors faced the Eccles Theatre audience and received an electric standing ovation.
In what many are calling a brutal and fully committed performance, Majors stars as Killian Maddox, an amateur bodybuilder who sacrifices health, both mental and physical, to pursue a dream of superstardom while he struggles to maintain control of a volatile temper.
The official fest synopsis calls the film “a provocative film that respects the dignity of its protagonist as it pulls no punches in portraying the most physically and emotionally painful moments of his darkening odyssey.” Those who caught the screening were quick to describe it as Taxi Driver.

When an independent filmmaker wants to hypnotize an audience, show off his chops, and make a grand statement, a surefire way to do it — at least if he has the talent — is to create his own version of a “Pulp Fiction”-meets-“Boogie Nights” violence-hanging-in-the-air climax set to a succulent needle drop. In “Magazine Dreams,” the writer-director Elijah Bynum (“Hot Summer Nights”), in his second feature, creates a splendid example of one of those scenes. It’s when his antihero, a bodybuilder named Killian Maddox (Jonathan Majors), has started to fall apart — though you could say that he’s been falling apart from almost the first scene.
Nursing a rage that’s epic and unhinged, Killian, as the “Sopranos” theme song put it, has got himself a gun. It’s a major one: a machine gun that could strafe an elephant. But he’s got it turned on a poor quivering middle-aged man,...

It’s been three years since cinephiles have made their otherwise annual pilgrimage to the Eccles Theater, but the Sundance Film Festival is back! Anyone who doesn’t want to brave Park City temperatures from January 19 – 29, though, can fest online. While a few high-profile releases are being shown exclusively to in-person attendees—Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool” and Nicole Holofcener’s “You Hurt My Feelings,” for example—this year’s virtual lineup still features lots of star power and even an Oscar contender for Best International Feature. Single film online tickets can be purchased here.

While Timothée Chalamet hasn't been around for too long, he has certainly made an impact on the film world. 2017 was a breakout year for the 23-year-old American actor, as he starred in Lady Bird, Hostiles, and Call Me By Your Name. His role in Call Me By Your Name also earned him an Oscar nomination, making him the third-youngest actor to have ever been nominated for the coveted award. Chalamet has certainly shown that, despite his age, he is a force to be reckoned with in the acting world and his stock is certain to rise to astronomical heights.

With his new movie Bones and All, Timothée Chalamet adds another critically acclaimed movie to his impressive filmography. Even at a young age, the actor has found a talent for picking interesting and complex movies from filmmakers like Christopher Nolan, Greta Gerwig, and Denis Villeneuve.

Things are going pretty, pretty well for HBO and HBO Max at the moment thanks to the smashing success of Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon. With its list of new releases for October 2022 though, HBO Max appears ready to up the ante even more.
The headlining title on HBO Max this month is undoubtedly The White Lotus season 2 on Oct. 30. Mike White’s freshly-Emmy-winning comedy looked to be a one-off after season 1. But cooler heads prevailed and the series is now returning in an anthology format. What will season 2 look like? Guess we’ll find out when the show checks in to Sicily later this month.
Aside from The White Lotus, HBO also has a few other TV shows of note this month. The torturously titled Pennyworth: The Origin of Batman’s Butler debuts its third season on Oct. 6. That will be followed by Avenue 5 season 2 on Oct.

The female-driven crime drama Cadejo Blanco has unveiled a clip in advance of its screening at the Toronto International Film Festival’s Industry Selects section. Cadejo Blanco is reminiscent of Maria Full of Grace and Miss Bala, addressing timely issues of lack of opportunities for women, youth violence, and indiscriminate crime in Guatemala. Writer/director Justin Lerner spent years in Guatemala interviewing young people with gang affiliations, collecting their life stories. For authenticity, he cast his interview subjects to play themselves in the film, and then spent a year doing acting workshops with them. He encouraged each actor to revise the script as they saw necessary, even during shooting, a process that allowed the non-professional cast to ensure their stories were being properly represented on screen.
