"Gates of Heaven" is the second episode of the fourth season of "Only Murders in the Building," a thrilling storytelling series that explores mystery, humor, and character development. The episode begins with Charles, covered in the ashes of his friend and stunt double, Sazz, in a state of shock and disbelief. Mabel and Oliver, the detectives, attempt to deduce the angle of the bullet and the possible location from which it was fired. The discovery of glass shards on the windowsill by Mabel suggests that the shot came from outside, setting the stage for the investigation. The trio's dynamic is tested as they grapple with the possibility that Charles was the intended target, adding a layer of urgency and danger to the proceedings. Charles's foray into Sazz's notes, filled with cryptic messages, adds to the intrigue. The exploration of the West Tower and its eccentric residents is a highlight, with Mabel and Oliver's encounter with Stink Eye Joe and the Sauce Family being both humorous and unsettling. The game of Oh Hell and the discovery of the ham ritual are a testament to the show's ability to blend dark humor with the macabre. The subplot involving Jan's surprise visit to Charles adds another layer to the narrative, revealing a softer side of her character and intensifying the suspense. The interaction between Jan, Charles, and the rest of the team is fraught with tension and raises more questions than it answers. "Gates of Heaven" is a thrilling episode of "Only Murders in the Building," featuring Mabel and Oliver infiltrating a mysterious Dudenoff apartment. The episode's climax involves the discovery of a ham radio, paint chips, and a pig in the tub, adding an emotional depth to the investigation. The use of the Luminol Spray to reveal Sazz's final message, "Tap In," ties back to Charles's acting career. The episode concludes with a shocking revelation that Sazz was looking into someone in the West Tower, shifting the focus from Sazz's murder to a potential murder plot against Charles. The episode showcases the strengths of the show, with its perfect blend of humor, suspense, and character-driven storytelling. The performances by the core trio and guest cast add depth and nuance to the story. "Gates of Heaven" is a testament to the show's ability to evolve and expand its universe while maintaining its original elements.
The feeling of watching Only Murders in The Building is almost inexplicable, a mixture of "what's next?" and "I want to live in this moment forever", surrounded by a feeling of being at home with old friends, Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez.
This episode manages to capture exactly that feeling, the script is extremely sharp and oscillates between drama and comedy with impeccable naturalness. The performances are fabulous and the special appearances are just the icing on the cake - and what a delicious cake it is!
Perhaps the distance from the movie arc was what made me happiest about this episode, but I feel apprehensive about what's to come, I'm afraid that this story will diminish the narrative instead of expanding it. In any case, I'll be here to find out as soon as it's released.

This was an extremely short episode plain and simple. That being said, it utilized every single second of that short running time. It's my belief that Jane Lynch is underappreciated as a serious actor. And her comedic chops are on impressive display in this episode. Also in 36 minutes we eulogize Sazz while introducing several new suspects, and finding multiple clues, while bringing back our favorite detective, and a surprise guest from Season 1. All 3 of our leads are on point in this episode, but really Steve Martin shines brightest of all with his scene talking to Jane Lynch. This may be the best single episode that didn't happen to be a season finale. The writing is deep and brings everything to a brilliant head leaving you wanting more. Writing this brilliant doesn't happen often, and should be rewarded.
I LOVED this episode. I prefer it when it's just the three of them, united & working together, rather than the huge ensemble cast of season three. For me the last season lacked the cosy, intimate feel that I love about this show. It felt manic, hectic & disjointed. It all came back together in this episode. Selena Gomez & Martin Short made me laugh. Steve Martin & Jane Lynch made me teary. Everyone's acting was absolutely superb & extremely moving in parts. Charles' ex was funny & terrifying in equal measure. In the next episodes of this season I hope they stick to this 'less is more' kind of format.
Following an incredible premiere with a chilling cliffhanger, OMITB has just released a more personal chapter that poignantly highlights the connection between Charles and Sazz. Though still brimming with the show's customary quirky wit, this episode wraps up with some of Steve Martin and Jane Lynch's most emotional work in front of the camera. Richard Kind was also a delight in his guest appearance, as was the unexpected return of a familiar face. "Gates of Heaven" is another stellar addition to season four that furthers the mystery and scores plenty of laughs, while also retaining its primary focus on Charles's loss.
