As 2025 kicks off, several book to movie adaptations can be expected to move forward to completion, some with release dates already slated for the quarter century marker.
Mickey17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, arrived in theaters in early March. Netflix released it’s big-budget sci-fi film The Electric State, which is based on a graphic novel, March 14. The Life List arrived on the streamer at the end of March, and On Swift Horses starring Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter and Daisy Edgar-Jones hit theaters in April.
Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and Josh Boone’s Regretting You, which will likely follow in the footsteps of the Blake Lively-starring It Ends With Us and further pave a path for future Collen Hoover film adaptations like Verity and Reminders of Him.

Minka Kelly and Dan Reynolds are enjoying some laid-back quality time together!
The cute couple was seen holding hands while on a morning coffee run on Tuesday (May 6) in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles.
The sighting comes a few weeks after the debut of Minka‘s steamy new western TV show Ransom Canyon, which has been successful on the Netflix charts.
The series debuted with 7.2 million views and landed in the number 2 spot on the Netflix most-watch TV shows of the week list. In its third week, the show is still at number 3 and it added another 4.2 million views.
Here’s the show’s synopsis: “Welcome to Ransom Canyon, where love, loss, and loyalty collide beneath the crimson mesas of Texas Hill Country. With three ranching family dynasties locked in a contest for control of the land, their lives and legacies are threatened by outside forces intent on destroying their way of life.

Several new Stephen King adaptations are on the way here in 2025, one of which is a feature film adaptation of King’s The Long Walk from director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and writer Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). It’s coming to theaters in September, and Vanity Fair provides us with a first look today.
In The Long Walk, first published in 1979, “The country holds an annual walking contest in which 100 teens must journey, non-stop and under strict rules, until only one of them is still standing alive and receiving a prize. The story told of a 16-year old walker named Raymond Garraty and the teens, some good, some bad, some mysterious, in his orbit.”
Star Cooper Hoffman tells Vanity Fair, “The Long Walk is a metaphor for life, in my eyes. It’s a metaphor for any sort of hard thing you’re going through,...

Tom Hardy’s new action movie, Havoc, has already experienced quite the fall from grace on Netflix after spending only a few days atop streaming charts, but now it has more competition coming for its spot. The Equalizer 2, which stars Denzel Washington opposite Pedro Pascal, hit Netflix this weekend and has immediately jumped to #3 on the streamer’s top 10 movies chart, one spot behind Havoc. As the audience score on Rotten Tomatoes continues to drop for Havoc — currently at 37% at the time of writing — The Equalizer 2 will certainly overtake it and send it further down the rankings. Washington’s action thriller earned a 52% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest in the franchise. The first installment earned a 61% and the final outing earned a 76% on the aggregate site.

Taylor Sheridan might be single-handedly responsible for making the Western genre cool again. Ever since the 1970s, when Westerns went out of style, the genre has sort of limped along, with some standout entries managing to draw critical praise and awards wins without reinvigorating the genre as a whole. But Sheridan has seemingly made everyone a fan once again, beginning with his massively popular neo-western series "Yellowstone."
The man's TV empire has expanded rapidly ever since, with multiple "Yellowstone" spin-offs creating an entire franchise centered around the travails of the Dutton family. If you thought it was Kevin Costner and the modern setting that made "Yellowstone" a hit, spin-offs "1883" and "1923" have proved that's not the case. In the wake of all this, others have tried to join in on this Western renaissance, most conspicuously, Netflix, which has churned out hits such as Western series "American Primeval" and "Ransom Canyon,...

Tanner Buchanan, Garrett Wareing and Quvenzhané Wallis have been tapped to star in a supernatural horror thriller “Hide and Don’t Speak,” with “The Beast Within” helmer Alexander J. Farrell directing.

Since making its premiere on Netflix in April, Ransom Canyon has become a breakout sensation and a new fan-favorite romantic drama series that has everyone shipping. Between Staten and Quinn, Ellie and Yancy, and Lauren and Lucas, there's so much romance to root for, but there's also plenty more possibilities for love triangles and new combinations to bloom.
Throughout the first season, Lauren (Lizzy Greene) was already in a love triangle between her rich, star athlete boyfriend Reid Collins (Andrew Liner) and secret wrong-side-of-the-tracks beau Lucas Russell (Garrett Warening). However, the tornado episode proved that Lauren had chemistry with another eligible bachelor in town: Lucas' troubled brother Kit (Casey W. Johnson).
After binge-watching the first season, Ransom Canyon fans have been shipping Lauren and Kit, and it's completely understandable. There was something between them as they rode out the storm together and got to know each other better. Of course,...

Imagine spending over a billion bucks on cowboy hats, family feuds, and ranch drama—and still wondering if it was worth it. That’s the wild ride Paramount ventured on with Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe. From John Dutton’s steely stare to Beth’s savage one-liners, the show became a TV phenomenon.
Soon, with spinoffs like 1883, 1923, and Tulsa King, Taylor Sheridan turned the Wild West into a money-hungry empire. But after all the dust settled (and over a billion dollars were spent), did this cowboy kingdom actually make Paramount rich—or just broke it further? Let’s check the numbers to see if Yellowstone was a gold mine or a ghost town.
Paramount’s extraordinary expense report on Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone isn’t just a show—it’s a full-blown Western empire and a TV phenomenon with spinoffs that could rival the Marvel phase.

This is a lot of numbers coming at you, but the point is Ransom Canyon didn't fall off after its first week on Netflix. In fact, more people tuned in, and that's obviously a great...

Minka Kelly and boyfriend Dan Reynolds shared a cute moment on the streets of L.A. this week.
The 44-year-old Ransom Canyon actress squatted down and pulled Dan‘s arm to stop him from jaywalking while stepping out for breakfast on Monday morning (April 28) in Los Angeles.
Dan, 37, went back on the curb with Minka and gave her a big hug while laughing about the moment and waiting for the light to change.
Minka has opened up about how Dan helped her learn music for the new Netflix show Ransom Canyon.
“He helped me a lot,” she said on Today with Jenna & Friends. “Because at home he’d help me translate — I can’t read music — so he would show me how it’s done.”

We’re now five days removed from the final season of You making its debut on Netflix, and viewership information for the series has finally been made available. Netflix has announced that the fifth and final season of You has scored 10.1 million viewers in its first few days on the platform. This comes despite Season 5 being the lowest-rated season of the show to date, earning scores of 82% from critics and 56% from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes. You has now garnered over 500 million views through its five seasons, and the recent release of Season 5 has even propelled Season 1 back into the Netflix top 10 for the first time in more than two years. The series stars Penn Badgley and was created for TV by Greg Berlanti and Sera Gamble.

Joe Goldberg has returned to haunt the Netflix Top 10 one last time.
You was back at No. 1 among English TV from April 21 to 27, with its fifth and final season tallying 10.1M views during its debut week.
Unlike Season 4, Netflix opted to release all 10 episodes at once this go around, but viewership still notably declined between seasons, putting Season 5’s premiere week at around a 45% decrease in views compared to Season 4A, which managed about 92.1M hours viewed in the same time frame upon release (that translates to about 18.42M “views” — the new metric that Netflix began using in 2023).
Netflix has had varied success with its split release strategy, and it appears that Season 4 is where the viewership decline for You really began. When looking at “views,” Season 4 Part 1 and 2 were both up from Season 3’s premiere week viewership of 133M hours viewed (which is about 13.3M views), but Part 2 did...

Pope Francis died on April 21, one day before Conclave came to Amazon Prime Video (and a few weeks after it left Peacock). But there was another pope-themed film available for streaming subscribers — and it took off on Netflix.
The Two Popes, a 2019 Oscar-winning film about the relationship between Francis (Jonathan Pryce) and his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI (Anthony Hopkins), returned to Netflix’s top 10. Its viewership increased by more than 30x the prior week, Netflix said, when Pope Francis was ailing but still alive.
From April 21-27, The Two Popes reached the Netflix top 10 in 27 countries, racking up 3.2 million global views.
That view tally was good enough for eighth place last week among all English-language movies on Netflix. Tom Hardy’s Havoc topped the list with 29.8 million views in just its first three days of availability, nearly tripling TV’s top performer, the premiere of You season five (10.1 million views...

As Season 1 of Ransom Canyon wrapped, fans of the new Netflix series were left with some loose threads that a new season would need to tie up. One of the characters that has the most to deal with is Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher), who presents himself as one kind of person throughout the episodes, only to reveal that he had a big secret that he conveniently forgot to tell his new lover, Ellie (Marianly Tejada). In a recent interview, Schumacher talked about his character's path in a potential Season 2.

I didn’t think I’d ever be into ranch dramas, and then Yellowstone rode in, courtesy of Taylor Sheridan. Moral ambiguity, land and conquest, family dynamics and power struggles, betrayal. For someone who’s a certified simp for Game of Thrones, I loved Yellowstone. But then Netflix dropped Ransom Canyon, and folks, I’m questioning all my life choices. I can’t pay my money for this now.
Where Yellowstone gave me GoT–level stuff, Ransom Canyon delivers Hallmark vibes in cowboy boots and not the good kind. It’s way too sanitized for a genre built on grit and grime. If this is Netflix’s answer to Yellowstone, in true Barbara Corcoran style, I’m out.

Netflix’s new Western series has been drawing comparisons to Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone, and despite being poorly received by critics, the show has still been a huge hit for the streamer. Jack Quaid Companion Streaming Success Rotten Tomatoes(Photo Credit –Prime Video/YouTube)
Jack Quaid isn’t just riding the wave of The Boys anymore, he’s stepping firmly into the spotlight of Hollywood’s next generation. With The Boys gearing up to wrap its satirical superhero saga in season 5, Quaid’s time as Hughie Campbell may be winding down, but the actor’s trajectory is clearly on the rise. He’s been building momentum steadily, and the past few years have made it obvious that this guy’s not fading into the background anytime soon.

If you’ve two-stepped your way through all 10 episodes of Ransom Canyon’s first season, you’ve already had the pleasure of meeting Lucas Russell. Now, get to know the man behind the boy next door.
“Playing Lucas, I got to become the cowboy that I’ve always dreamed of being,” actor Garrett Wareing tells TVLine. The full-circle role also brought him back to Texas, having grown up in College Station before moving to Los Angeles to pursue an acting career. “Funny enough, this dream brought me right back to my roots, which I think is pretty cool,” he says.

Westerns might have fallen out of favor decades ago, but they never truly died altogether. Even after the genre became reliably unpopular in the 1970s, we still had a trickle of truly great Westerns from 1992's "Unforgiven" to 2010's "True Grit." Heck, there's even been some great Western movies to come out of the last decade. Still, it remains true that the genre's glory days are long behind it.
But in recent years, as Hollywood has discovered that conservatives also watch things and dads everywhere have finally learned how to use streaming services, there's been hints of a modest Western revival. By far the most influential factor at play here is Taylor Sheridan's "Yellowstone" and its various spin-offs, which have proved that Westerns, both neo and traditional, not only maintain a certain appeal, but can be the basis for...

Creating an interesting TV soap that generates millions of viewers is an art in itself. It requires a great evolving plot (often based on a book or a series of books), an unusual location, and something that can carry it. Such a concept was a great success for Yellowstone, and Virgin River did well, too.
Now, following this concept, starting April 17, 2025, Netflix began showing Ransom Canyon, another such series. The 10-episode series is created, written, and executive produced by April Blair and features a big-name cast starring Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly, James Brolin, and many others.
The first two episodes were directed by Amanda Marsalis. While the initial critics' opinions are mixed, the audiences don’t seem to be bothered much so far, as it is topping or is close to the top of viewers' lists in many countries.

As much as we instantly think about Yellowstone when we take a look at the fresh neo-western series Ransom Canyon, we can't deny that the show managed to find its own rhythm and identity in Season 1. For one, the Netflix series has a much less cynical approach to love — even though its romantic storylines have their share of twists. In a new interview, series star Jack Schumacher (Top Gun: Maverick), who plays cowboy Yancy Grey, talked about his character's secret, which is revealed by the end of the season.
The storyline of Yancy in Ransom Canyon is pretty compelling because he wasn't exactly looking for the love of his life. Initially, he comes to Texas Hill Country wanting to make money fast and then move on to the next town. He just didn't count on meeting Ellie Estevez (Marianly Tejada) and falling head over heels for her. It all looks...

Note: The following contains “Ransom Canyon” spoilers for the finale on Netflix
There’s no shortage of conflicts in Netflix’s new contemporary Western series “Ransom Canyon,” but there is one mystery at the heart of everything that spans across the season: who killed Randall?
It wasn’t murder, technically. At the start of the series, we learn that Staten’s (Josh Duhamel) son Randall left his dad in anger after his birthday party, and wound up flipping his car on the road, killing him. The news is devastating to the town, especially after losing Randall’s mother recently too.
Though the police say otherwise, Staten is convinced that there was another car on the road that night, one that either forced his son off the road or collided with teenager, causing the accident. And, in the end, Staten is right.
After discovering a piece of a truck buried near the accident site,...

Young Sheldon may have wrapped up its final season last year, but the hit CBS series has found new life on the world’s biggest streaming service. The first six seasons of The Big Bang Theory prequel series had been streaming on Netflix, but the final season joined the rest in the middle of April. This led to Young Sheldon experiencing a swift run on the Netflix charts, where it currently resides at #4 at the time of writing. The show earned a score of 84% from general audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, and it stars Iain Armitage as young Sheldon Cooper, Zoe Perry as Mary Cooper, Lance Barber as George Cooper Sr., Montana Jordan as Georgia Cooper, Raegan Revord as Missy Cooper, Wallace Shawn as Dr. John Sturgis, and even Jim Parsons as older Sheldon Cooper.

With Tudum now updated, it’s time to take a closer look at the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The two lists have several surprises from last week, showing us what has been popular with viewers. They've clearly not been listening to the critics when they made their choices from the many new additions from Netflix each week.
The movie list includes a couple of films where the 'never mind the critics' element applies. That's a great approach. Watching what you like, not what you're told to like, is a good plan. That is balanced out by two strong family viewing movies that likely had an added attraction over Easter. And for a twist and touch of variety, there’s also a disturbing documentary film in there.
Critics also come into play on the shows. Although in this instance, they may be right, as one new series could struggle.

Netflix just had a streaming success with the new Western series Ransom Canyon, just a few months after the big Western success of American Primeval. You can expect another Western to enter into the Netflix Top 10 later this week when Murder at Yellowstone City is added to the streaming service. The film hit festivals and some theaters in 2022 but remains underrated; its Netflix debut will undoubtedly change that. It's a classical Western with a twist, incorporating an Agatha Christie-type mystery among a great ensemble cast.

The success of Yellowstone is undeniable — the Paramount+ series repeatedly brings in big viewing numbers, and it's no wonder that other platforms are trying to replicate the format. Netflix's latest attempt at the neo-western genre is Ransom Canyon. For a new and unknown series, the title resonated pretty well with Netflix subscribers, and with just one week it shot up all the way to #2 among the most-watched shows on the platform — it only failed to outperform the new season of Black Mirror.
Ransom Canyon is set in Texas and chronicles the feud between three families that own ranches and are fighting to control the land. Yes, it's a pretty similar situation to what the Duttons deal with in Yellowstone, but the story managed to rope viewers in: the series accumulated 7.2 million views in less than seven days, which is more than Adolescence did this week (6M) and more than...

After its first weekend of release on Netflix, new Western romantic drama series Ransom Canyon has already made quite the mark and could be lassoing up a successful run. On April 22, less than a week after the series made its premiere on April 17, Netflix shared its latest batch of viewership numbers, and there was some exciting news for the romantic drama, but less exciting news for Pulse.
Ransom Canyon debuted at No. 2 on Netflix's weekly top 10 most watched English shows ranking with 7.2 million views, which translates to 56.6 million hours viewed. The freshman drama came in behind Black Mirror, which easily took No. 1 with 10.6 million views, rising from 7 million views the previous week. Nothing on Netflix is beating Adolescence's numbers, though.
Still, the romantic drama series made a strong debut, an ever so slightly stronger one than medical drama series Pulse, which arrived earlier this month with 6.5 million viewers in...

The Netflix weekly TV charts got an overhaul last week.
Season 7 of the techno-paranoia series Black Mirror managed 10.6M views in its first full week on the platform from April 14 to 20, which is up from its debut week’s 7.1M to put it in first place among English-language TV. Though, both weeks of viewership have been down compared to Season 6. Similarly, that season didn’t top the charts until its first full week on the streamer either, but it amassed 11.6M views when it did.
Second place went to Ransom Canyon, which debuted on the charts with 7.2M views, while Adolescence fell to third place with another 6M views during this interval. The limited series is now sitting at 130M views since it premiered, so it is inching close to overtaking Stranger Things 4 on the all-time most popular list, but it still has a ways to go.

It’s been a challenging year to be a fan of the FBI franchise.
At the beginning of 2025, all three entries looked good for renewal, but reports emerged that one of the spinoffs, FBI: International or FBI: Most Wanted, may not make it onto the schedule.
If that was bad, I can only imagine your pain when CBS canceled both spinoffs earlier this year.

There are multiple reasons Netflix’s drama series Ransom Canyon — starring Josh Duhamel, Minka Kelly and James Brolin in the story of three rival ranching families in Texas Hill Country — is about to have its moment in the sun.
For starters, the streaming show that launched April 17 is aiming to tap into a wave of viewer demand for soapy Westerns following the massive success of Paramount+’s Yellowstone. But more importantly, as the first Netflix production to power its base camp and catering almost entirely by the sun, Ransom Canyon is helping to expand the ways in which Hollywood projects can reduce their carbon footprints.
Based on author Jodi Thomas’ book series that debuted in 2015, the show from creator April Blair (All American) filmed much of its 10-episode first season at ranches scattered across 150 miles throughout New Mexico. Filming on location made the shoot an ideal fit for solar power,...

After binge-watching all 10 episodes and taking in that shocking season 1 ending, all we want to know as fans is whether Netflix will renew the show for season 2. There hasn't even been a full week since Ransom Canyon made its premiere on Netflix on April 17, but we're already lassoing up a positive update about the fate of the new fan-favorite Western romantic drama series.

Netflix’s new western and family drama, Ransom Canyon, has already captured hearts.
The drama was adapted from the first book in Jodi Thomas’s Ransom Canyon book series, and it provided Netflix with a wealth of material. Still, her series reads more like an anthology.
It introduced new characters in each book, and a few characters like Lucas, Lauren, Reid, and Yancy reappeared in several.

Despite Netflix adapting the first book, like many other book-to-screen adaptations, it changed a lot.
It still had the angsty romance from the novels, but showrunner and creator April Blair added characters and evolved their storylines. She also raised the stakes by adding family drama, a mystery, and feuding ranches over land.

When Suits LA premiered on NBC earlier this year, there were many questions about why no franchise alums were involved from the get-go.
But thanks to fans’ calls, Gabriel Macht has appeared in several episodes, bringing the iconic lawyer Harvey Specter to Los Angeles.
Suits LA Season 1 Episode 9 delved further into Harvey’s life than ever before, offering some interesting updates about where things went for him after Suits Season 9.
(Pana Pantazidis/USA Network)
My favorite aspect of Harvey being on Suits LA is that he’s the same Harvey we know and love, complete with his signature wit.
He’s helped show shades of Ted that I didn’t think were possible. Ted hasn’t been given the best material as the show’s lead, and there are concerns about how viable the show is as a spinoff.

For the second time in this television viewing season, I’ve found myself mourning the loss of an incredibly powerful, inspiring, rare love story.
It’s not often that love stories grab me that much, even though I’ve come to appreciate romance more over the years (or at least be more forthcoming with myself and others about how much I enjoy a constantly denigrated genre), but I digress.
Right now, I’m reeling from the loss of one of my favorite television couples: 9-1-1’s Bathena.
(Disney/Chris Willard)
There’s nothing I love more than older characters getting a second chance at love. Too often, television and film restrict love to young people, as if somehow, as we get older, we lose out on finding real love again.
When you think about that, it’s incredibly bleak, but it’s also just patently untrue.

April shared with TV Insider about the possibility of future seasons, “We’ve already started the writers’ room, even though the show hasn’t been picked up to series yet for Season 2.”
And she confirmed, if there is a season 2, there’s be a time jump: “We would need to because I don’t want to do anything in New York. Quinn needs to go away and save her ranch, and we need to see what the implications are for that punch that Davis goads Staten into doing and what that plot...

It will be the lovers’ quarrel of the century during the Elsbeth Season 2 Finale. I’m talking a blood bath for the ages between a husband and wife, ready to throw it all away to take each other down.
There will be riots in the streets, TVs thrown through windows, and an outcry from the public asking why God has abandoned us. Okay, maybe it won’t be that bad, but it’ll be dramatic, nonetheless.
In case you haven’t heard, Carrie Preston’s husband, Michael Emerson, recently joined the cast of Elsbeth as a recurring character. Who doesn’t love to work with their significant other? Everyone, that’s who.
(Michael Parmelee/CBS)
Emerson came on board for those not in the know as the titular character’s newest nemesis, rival, and ultimate enemy.
To be fair, Michael Emerson has Vf or Villain Face. The CBS series will...
