As 2025 kicks off, several book to movie adaptations can be expected to move forward to completion, some with release dates already slated for the quarter century marker.

Mickey17, directed by Bong Joon Ho, arrived in theaters in early March. Netflix released it’s big-budget sci-fi film The Electric State, which is based on a graphic novel, March 14. The Life List arrived on the streamer at the end of March, and On Swift Horses starring Jacob Elordi, Will Poulter and Daisy Edgar-Jones hit theaters in April.

Edgar Wright’s The Running Man and Josh Boone’s Regretting You, which will likely follow in the footsteps of the Blake Lively-starring It Ends With Us and further pave a path for future Collen Hoover film adaptations like Verity and Reminders of Him.

“The Four Seasons,” Netflix’s new comedy series from Tina Fey, debuted as the streamer’s most-watched TV title of the week of April 28 to May 4, hitting 11.9 million views in its first four days of availability.

It was followed by “You” Season 5, which reached 10.9 million views in its first full week of availability after debuting at No. 1 with 10.1 million views in four days the week before. Several new Stephen King adaptations are on the way here in 2025, one of which is a feature film adaptation of King’s The Long Walk from director Francis Lawrence (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes) and writer Jt Mollner (Strange Darling). Mister Smith has bulked up its Cannes sales slate with supernatural horror Hide And Don’t Speak starring Tanner Buchanan, Garrett Wareing and Quvenzhané Wallis from Range, producers on the independent horror smash Longlegs and The Monkey.

Tanner Buchanan, Garrett Wareing and Quvenzhané Wallis have been tapped to star in a supernatural horror thriller “Hide and Don’t Speak,” with “The Beast Within” helmer Alexander J. Farrell directing.

Range Media, which produced “Longlegs” and “The Monkey,” is shepherding the feature with Mister Smith introducing to buyers in Cannes.

In “Hide and Don’t Speak,” six teenagers “play a terrifying viral Japanese game in which the players summon a vengeful spirit for a deadly round of hide-and-seek,” the synopsis reads.

Buchanan has appeared in “Cobra Kai” and “How to Date Billy Walsh.” Wareing appeared in “Perfect,” “God Is a Bullet” and Netflix’s “Ransom Canyon” and will soon be seen in “The Long Walk.” Wallis was the youngest Best Actress Oscar nominee ever for “Beasts of the Southern Wild.” She recently appeared in “Breathe” opposite Jennifer Hudson.

Unlike Season 4, Netflix opted to release all 10 episodes at once this go around, but viewership still notably declined between seasons, putting Season 5’s premiere week at around a 45% decrease in views compared to Season 4A, which managed about 92.1M hours viewed in the same time frame upon release (that translates to about 18.42M “views” — the new metric that Netflix began using in 2023).

Netflix has had varied success with its split release strategy, and it appears that Season 4 is where the viewership decline for You really began. When looking at “views,” Season 4 Part 1 and 2 were both up from Season 3’s premiere week viewership of 133M hours viewed (which is about 13.3M views), but Part 2 did...

As Season 1 of Ransom Canyon wrapped, fans of the new Netflix series were left with some loose threads that a new season would need to tie up. One of the characters that has the most to deal with is Yancy Grey (Jack Schumacher), who presents himself as one kind of person throughout the episodes, only to reveal that he had a big secret that he conveniently forgot to tell his new lover, Ellie (Marianly Tejada). I didn’t think I’d ever be into ranch dramas, and then Yellowstone rode in, courtesy of Taylor Sheridan. Moral ambiguity, land and conquest, family dynamics and power struggles, betrayal. For someone who’s a certified simp for Game of Thrones, I loved Yellowstone. But then Netflix dropped Ransom Canyon, and folks, I’m questioning all my life choices. I can’t pay my money for this now.

Where Yellowstone gave me GoT–level stuff, Ransom Canyon delivers Hallmark vibes in cowboy boots and not the good kind. It’s way too sanitized for a genre built on grit and grime. If this is Netflix’s answer to Yellowstone, in true Barbara Corcoran style, I’m out.

With Tudum now updated, it’s time to take a closer look at the top five most-viewed movies and shows on Netflix. The two lists have several surprises from last week, showing us what has been popular with viewers. They've clearly not been listening to the critics when they made their choices from the many new additions from Netflix each week.

The movie list includes a couple of films where the 'never mind the critics' element applies. That's a great approach. Watching what you like, not what you're told to like, is a good plan. That is balanced out by two strong family viewing movies that likely had an added attraction over Easter. And for a twist and touch of variety, there’s also a disturbing documentary film in there.

Critics also come into play on the shows. Although in this instance, they may be right, as one new series could struggle.

Netflix just had a streaming success with the new Western series Ransom Canyon, just a few months after the big Western success of American Primeval. You can expect another Western to enter into the Netflix Top 10 later this week when Murder at Yellowstone City is added to the streaming service. The film hit festivals and some theaters in 2022 but remains underrated; its Netflix debut will undoubtedly change that. It's a classical Western with a twist, incorporating an Agatha Christie-type mystery among a great ensemble cast.

The success of Yellowstone is undeniable — the Paramount+ series repeatedly brings in big viewing numbers, and it's no wonder that other platforms are trying to replicate the format. Netflix's latest attempt at the neo-western genre is Ransom Canyon. For a new and unknown series, the title resonated pretty well with Netflix subscribers, and with just one week it shot up all the way to #2 among the most-watched shows on the platform — it only failed to outperform the new season of Black Mirror.

Ransom Canyon is set in Texas and chronicles the feud between three families that own ranches and are fighting to control the land. After its first weekend of release on Netflix, new Western romantic drama series Ransom Canyon has already made quite the mark and could be lassoing up a successful run. On April 22, less than a week after the series made its premiere on April 17, Netflix shared its latest batch of viewership numbers, and there was some exciting news for the romantic drama, but less exciting news for Pulse.

Ransom Canyon debuted at No. 2 on Netflix's weekly top 10 most watched English shows ranking with 7.2 million views, which translates to 56.6 million hours viewed. The freshman drama came in behind Black Mirror, which easily took No. 1 with 10.6 million views, rising from 7 million views the previous week. Nothing on Netflix is beating Adolescence's numbers, though.

Still, the romantic drama series made a strong debut, an ever so slightly stronger one than medical drama series Pulse, which arrived earlier this month with 6.5 million viewers in...

Season 7 of the techno-paranoia series Black Mirror managed 10.6M views in its first full week on the platform from April 14 to 20, which is up from its debut week’s 7.1M to put it in first place among English-language TV. Though, both weeks of viewership have been down compared to Season 6. Similarly, that season didn’t top the charts until its first full week on the streamer either, but it amassed 11.6M views when it did.

Second place went to Ransom Canyon, which debuted on the charts with 7.2M views, while Adolescence fell to third place with another 6M views during this interval. The limited series is now sitting at 130M views since it premiered, so it is inching close to overtaking Stranger Things 4 on the all-time most popular list, but it still has a ways to go.

After binge-watching all 10 episodes and taking in that shocking season 1 ending, all we want to know as fans is whether Netflix will renew the show for season 2. There hasn't even been a full week since Ransom Canyon made its premiere on Netflix on April 17, but we're already lassoing up a positive update about the fate of the new fan-favorite Western romantic drama series.

In an interview with TV Insider, Ransom Canyon showrunner April Blair revealed that the writers' room has already opened for season 2, though she was quick to clarify that Netflix hasn't yet given the series an official green light. It's still a positive sign to hear that Netflix has sanctioned for the writers' to get back together to plot stories for a potential second season. Here's what Blair said:

Netflix’s new western and family drama, Ransom Canyon, has already captured hearts.

The drama was adapted from the first book in Jodi Thomas’s Ransom Canyon book series, and it provided Netflix with a wealth of material. Still, her series reads more like an anthology.

It introduced new characters in each book, and a few characters like Lucas, Lauren, Reid, and Yancy reappeared in several.
