Will Arnett was originally cast as the voice of K.I.T.T., and recorded his role for the pilot episode. NBC fired him 2 weeks before the pilot aired, after Ford Motor Co. informed NBC that Arnett was the voice of GMC truck commercials. Val Kilmer was cast at the last minute.
This is the second Knight Rider spin-off to have one of Michael Knight's children as a character. In this series it's Mike Traceur, while in El equipo fantástico (1997) it was Jenny.
Although KITT is supposed to be a Shelby GT500KR Mustang, the Mustang used for the driving scenes was really a V6 model with an automatic transmission modified to appear as a Shelby GT500KR Mustang. There are times where you can see the automatic gear shifter in certain shots. It was established in the movie premiere that KITT had a manual transmission.
An 80's series K.I.T.T. can be briefly seen, partially covered by a tarp, in a shot of a workshop where the new K.I.T.T. is said to have been developed.
The KR in the full name of the model of the car "Ford Mustang Shelby Cobra GT 500 KR" stands for "King of the Road". Coincidentally, it's also the initials for the TV show.
