Although the series ran for 8 years, within the story universe, the series only takes place in summer season 1959, and summer season 1960.

Harry Secombe was originally considered for the part of Ted Bovis.

The bulk of the location scenes of Hi-de-Hi! were filmed at a real holiday camp run by Warners (not related to Warner Bros.) in the town of Dovercourt near Harwich, Essex, excluding the studio-based interior sets of the Entertainment staff chalets, offices, and milk bar. In a likely parallel to the eventual fate of the fictional Maplins Holiday Camp, the real Warners Holiday Camp would later be demolished and replaced by housing.

Bert Green is the oft-mentioned - but never seen - resident cordon bleu chef at the camp. Miss Cathcart, Peggy's boss, is also unseen despite regular mentions.

Barry Howard ("Barry Stuart-Hargreaves") became increasingly unhappy with his character as the series progressed and began drinking heavily. By 1986, these problems (and some 'inappropriate' behaviour on-set) led to him being written out and replaced by Ben Aris playing a former lover of "Yvonne Stuart-Hargreaves".
