Awarded the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival amid much mouth-frothing from the American press over its alleged communist credentials, Henri-Georges Clouzot’s 1953 classic The Wages of Fear now seems much less like a potboiler spin on Salt of the Earth and a lot more like the spiritual godfather to every testosterone-fueled thrill ride since. Time has inevitably eradicated the contemporary circumstance that fed its political reception and modern audiences will surely recognize that the howls of anti-Americanism said more about the accuser than the accused. If anything, The Wages of Fear now registers as the callous post-World War II flipside to Casablanca, in which people have been scattered not only into pockets of nobility, but also outposts of pusillanimity.

If Diabolique was Clouzot’s bid to out-Hitchcock Hitchcock, then The Wages of Fear is a little bit like a Howard Hawks thriller, only without the mitigating presence of women.

‘Elevated horror’ gets a bad reputation – but the era is easier to identify now it’s definitively ended with such films as The Monkey.

Hot off the critical success of his Silence-Of-The-Lambs-ish serial killer thriller, Longlegs, you could be surprised to find the next film Osgood Perkins’ name appears next to on a marquee is very, very silly.

The Monkey, which arrived in UK cinemas last week, shares a name and a simian mascot with the Stephen King source text. It even shares a certain amount of the author’s nihilistic wink-wink sense of humour. But where even King’s goofiest tales usually possess some amount of sinister melodrama, Perkins mines the “toy monkey that makes random people explode in gnarly ways” premise for damn-near every laugh it’s worth.

People love horror movies. As much as they fail to accept it when a discussion about cinema’s horrific impact comes up, one can’t think about movies without the horror genre involved in some way. If cinema is like a stimulus, horror movies must be the greatest catalyst to get a reaction out of a viewer. Are you looking for a good old-fashioned scare-fest while sitting on your couch? Twists have a long, storied history in horror. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari, Diabolique, Carnival of Souls, and Psycho remain among the most notable early horror films with twists and turns you won’t see coming. That tradition continued through the mid- to late-20th century with films like Se7en and The Sixth Sense. After the turn of the millennium, filmmakers leaned further into the unexpected to construct their visions of terror, thus delivering other essentials such as The Village, The Others, and The Mist.

Nothing is more terrifying than sitting in anticipation in the dark waiting for that unexpected jump scare mastered over the decades by directors who have defined the horror genre since the 1920s with spooky monsters, ghoulish demons and scream queens.

The Conjuring Universe has grossed $2 billion, and dollar for dollar, it’s the most successful cinematic universe that doesn’t involve superheroes. Surprisingly, the highest grossing chapter in the James Wan and Peter Safran-produced horror franchise is 2018’s The Nun ($366 million), and now, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It director Michael Chaves is back with its follow-up, The Nun II.

The Taissa Farmiga-led film is Chaves’ second go-round in the Conjuring franchise, as the official count does not include his feature directorial debut, The Curse of La Llorona (2019), despite New Line and Wan’s involvement, as well as a character and footage from 2014’s Annabelle. (The point of contention for Chaves is that franchise co-producer Peter Safran did not shepherd La Llorona with Wan.)

By the late-50s, Paramount Studios was desperate, though not nearly as much as their rapidly-aging contract director, Alfred Hitchcock. The Brit had hit a rough streak. Years prior he had been bested by his French counterpart, Henri-Georges Clouseau, missing out on the bidding rights for a French suspense novel that would become the classic thriller Diabolique. For a time in the late-50s, it was the upstart Clouseau who was arguably the master of the horror genre, not Hitchcock.

1960s was a time of extreme stress and introspection for a director experiencing rejection for the first time in decades. He believed he found his salvation in the 1959 Robert Bloch novel Psycho. Isabelle Adjani is re-teaming with “The King’s Favorite” director Josée Dayan on the six-part mystery thriller “Belphégor.”

The acclaimed actress stars as the enigmatic 16th-century noblewoman and courtier Diane de Poitiers in “The King’s Favorite,” which premiered at the Unifrance Rendez-Vous on Monday.

The €7.6 million (7.5 million), four-part series, produced by Dayan’s Passion Films and sold internationally by France TV Distribution, examines de Poitiers’ complicated relationship with the young French king, Henry II (played by Hugo Becker), that lasted more than two decades. The large ensemble cast also includes Samuel Labarthe, Virginie Ledoyen and Gérard Depardieu.

Adjani next stars in an action-comedy helmed by Mélanie Laurent, which is set to go into production next week, Adjani told Variety.

Adjani is also set to star in a TV thriller alongside Benjamin Biolay likewise to be directed by Dayan later this year and described as in the style of Henri-Georges Clouzot’s “Diabolique.

Amazon Prime Video is ringing in the month of July with a smorgasbord of new titles, from “House of Gucci” (previously available to purchase or rent on Amazon Prime Video) to classic films like “Clueless,” “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” and “Yentl.” Apart from the Lady Gaga-starring crime drama, which becomes available to stream on July 2, most other titles will join the platform on July 1.

The streamer is also debuting a handful of Amazon originals this month. The comic book series adaptation “Paper Girls” will hit the streamer at the very end of the month. “Warriors on the Field,” a documentary about Indigenous players in the Australian Football League, premieres July 8. Indie drama “Don’t Make Me Go” and coming-of-age series “Forever Summer: Hamptons” debut July 15, followed by the Billy Porter-directed “Anything’s Possible” and the boxing feature “Prizefighter” on July 22.

A whole bunch of classic movies are about to get the reboot treatment, both as TV shows and movies. It's been announced that Morgan Creek Productions, which was first founded in 1988, is rebranding as Morgan Creek Entertainment Group. Their new strategy will be to look at their massive library of titles and work on reboots across all forms of media. Some of the bigger titles they are looking at rebooting are Young Guns, Major League and, most notably, Jim Carrey's classic comedy Ace Ventura. Today we're officially back to weekly "Best Shot" posts with François Truffaut's biotragedy The Story Of Adele H (1975). For nearly thirty years French beauty Isabelle Adjani held the record for the Youngest Best Actress Nominee of all time; she was 20 when Adele H made her an international star. To add to Adjani's Oscar Curio factor, she still holds another record: she's the only actor or actress ever nominated twice for French language performances. Nomination #2 came for another biotragedy Camille Claudel (1988). [Marion Cotillard surely hopes to tie that particular Best Actress record later this year in Rust and Bone (2012).]

Adjani all but vanished from screens round about the time she and Daniel Day-Lewis procreated and split. The sensational Queen Margot (1994) and the reviled Diabolique (1996) with Sharon Stone were her last big draws so I assume many readers are unfamiliar and that this Best Shot subject would be a fresh choice. It has never been safe to predict what Isabelle Adjani was going to do, or why. In 1974, François Truffaut was planning to make The Story of Adele H, about a daughter of Victor Hugo who falls in love with a young army officer and goes mad in her efforts to get him to return the love. He wanted someone new for the lead role, and was intrigued by Adjani in a recent hit comedy called La Gifle. Adjani was 19 and ravishing; but she was under contract as a stage actress to La Comédie-Française.

Truffaut pursued her. The theatre company declined to release her. The matter went to law. Adjani stayed quiet – but in the end she had her way. She would do Adele H. Truffaut...
