The finale drove 6.3M globally in its first six days of streaming, making it the biggest finale of the year across the two streamers, per Disney.

In fact, Disney also says its the third most-viewed finale ever for a Hulu Original, though the company didn’t give details on the top two finales for comparison.

Good American Family, which dramatizes the headline-capturing adoption of Natalia Grace, did appear to be generating quite a bit of buzz for Disney, consistently ranking in the top five on the Hulu Top 15 Today list every day since launch. That success carried over into social platforms as well, where the series scored the most TikTok engagements, shares, and new followers of all scripted Hulu Originals in 2025.

The finale of “Good American Family,” the Hulu limited series based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, reached 6.3 million views in its first six days of streaming.

That makes the episode Hulu’s third-most-watched finale of all time, as well as the biggest finale of 2025 thus far across both Hulu and Disney+, according to Disney. These comparisons are based on data gathered across all season finales, not first seasons or final seasons alone, with views being calculated by dividing total time streamed by an episode’s runtime.

There isn’t necessarily closure to be found in finale of Hulu’s Good American Family.

With Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) acquitted on child abuse charges, Natalia Grace is left with few paths for retribution, especially since the court still considers her a legal adult. In the final moments of the limited series, Imogen Faith Reid’s Natalia still tries to appeal to her former adoptive father in hopes that he might one day understand the pain he caused her via his complicity.

By that point, it’s easy to understand why Natalia is so distrustful of others. She seems to be pushing everyone away, even those who tried to help her. But, what might come across as Natalia isolating herself is actually her, finally, taking control of her own life after so many years...

Now that Good American Family has released its final episode, viewers have seen the full intent of the Hulu’s narrative project about Natalia Grace.

The eight-episode limited series, which is inspired by Grace’s viral real-life story, was first told from the perspectives of Kristine and Michael Barnett, the Indiana husband-and-wife who adopted Ukrainian-born Grace in 2010, and who are played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass. Halfway through, the series flipped to being told from the point of view of Grace, played by Imogen Faith Reid, and later introduced Grace’s next adoptive parent Cynthia Mans, played by Christina Hendricks.

The full season of Good American Family is now streaming on Hulu, and we're still left reeling at the injustice Natalia Grace faces in court. The finale does end on a bit of a justice-filled note, if you can call it that. Or at least as close to justice as you can get in those circumstances. Though anyone who knows the real-life story knows that's not where Natalia's tale ends. So is there a possibility for a season 2?

At the time of this writing, Hulu has not renewed or cancelled the drama so we don't know if there will be a Good American Family season 2. The writers did tell a very specific story, and a specific part of the true story in the first season. With that being said, the creative team themselves may want to leave it there and not necessarily continue telling more.

In the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family, the last threads of Kristine Barnett’s (Ellen Pompeo) accusations against Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) firmly fall apart.

Mountains of evidence, including damning Facebook messages between Kristine and her husband Michael (Mark Duplass), and several expert witnesses testifying that Natalia was a child when she was abandoned by the couple turn just about everyone against Kristine — including her own biological children — after she managed for years to convince her friends and family (and the courts) that Natalia was an adult masquerading as a child, abusing Kristine and her children, and exploiting the family for money.

Frustratingly, and thanks to a frighteningly flawed judicial system, Natalia doesn’t win her case. Nobody is able to present most of this evidence in court, or even refer to her as a child.

With Good American Family last week ending on a more hopeful note, and not seeing Michael and Kristine very much, the couple is back in episode 7 this week. The penultimate episode of Good American Family on Hulu, episode 7, really got into things where there were many revelations. Natalia didn't have representation when the. Barnetts went to court to change her legal age, and in speaking with multiple specialists they all say that they told Kristine and Michael that Natalia was a child and not an adult. Oof.

There's also the fact that something was up with that rude judge and he didn't even give Natalia the chance to speak at her change of guardianship hearing where Michael shows up and doesn't even look at her. He knows he and Kristine can be in serious trouble legally if Natalia's age gets changed. And he decides to work with her even though in the past, their marriage has basically fallen apart, and in the present they are divorced.

Back when the mysterious scandal surrounding Natalia Grace Barnett made headlines, Imogen Faith-Reid — the actor who would one day play her — wasn’t aware of it. What does a casting director do? It’s one of the most important roles on any film or TV production, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the job. At IndieWire and Disney’s Pass the Remote panel on April 1 — a giddy TV FYC event that put top casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield, Josh Einsohn, Wendy O’Brien, Danielle Aufiero, Seth Yanklewitz, and Julie Ashton in front of a packed theater at Vidiots in Los Angeles — Yanklewitz said some people even think he and his peers are inherently “mean.”

“There are so many misconceptions,” said Yanklewitz about the business of casting. With a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe nomination to her name, Ellen Pompeo's iconic run as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy has brought with it superstardom, with legions of doting followers supporting her every career move. However, her latest venture, Hulu's brand-new fictionalized version of the Natalia Grace story, Good American Family, has done little to spark excitement from her fanbase.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Good American Family has suffered a poor start to life, earning a less-than-impressive 55% from critics, and a much worse 28% audience score. These early responses, with the show only four episodes in to date, hint at a struggle to maintain viewership for the show, with a strong ensemble cast including Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid doing little to fend off the negative opinions.

For Pompeo, sadly, poor Rotten Tomatoes reception is nothing new in a career hit by misfires.

We start to get hints that perhaps Kristine has a savior complex, and she especially uses it on Michael. Back when they were young, he was clearly struggling with depression, almost jumping off a bridge into traffic before she saved him. And that's actually what leads to the two getting married.

While appearing on The Jennifer Hudson Show on Wednesday, the Good American Family star quipped that she got “so much mileage” with both of her kids when she joined the star-studded cast of Swift’s music video for her song “Bad Blood.”

“Taylor is such a good girl. I didn’t know her and she invited me to be in the video and I thought, ‘Oh, that will be fun.’ And I went and did the video. Honestly, it was the easiest thing. It was like an hour or two,” she told Hudson.

By the third episode of Hulu’s Good American Family, audiences may very well be wondering how anyone can dispute that Natalia Grace terrorized her adopted family, the Barnetts, in the three years she lived with them.

But, as co-showrunner Sarah Sutherland warns, no one should jump to conclusions just yet.

“This episode is basically setting bread crumbs that will then get paid off in the end,” she tells Deadline.

The 55-year-old actress joined co-stars Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid at a special screening of their new series Good American Family on Wednesday (March 26) held at BAFTA in London, England.

For the screening, Ellen looked cool in a tan furry coat paired with tan pants.

The new show tells the story of Natalia Grace, played by Imogen, a girl with a rare form of dwarfism who was adopted by a Midwestern couple and later accused of being an adult women.

Ellen and Mark play Kristine and Michael Barnett, the adoptive parents.
