Mark Duplass on exploring the ‘dark underbelly of the hero complex’ in Hulu’s ‘Good American Family’
Image
"I was able to look more closely at what hero complexes are and what people's desires to help people are really all about," says Mark Duplass of his role as Michael Barnett in the Hulu limited series Good American Family. "Why did Michael and [wife] Kristine feel like they needed to adopt this girl? Was it really because they wanted to help her or were there other things involved?"

Good American Family tells the story of Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism, whose adoption takes a dark turn when her new family begins to question her true identity. Duplass and Ellen Pompeo play her adoptive parents, the Barnetts, and newcomer Imogen Faith Reid stars as Natalia.

Duplass admits he was initially hesitant about the series. "I read some headlines," he tells Gold Derby. "I had seen a little bit of the documentary. When this came about,...

‘Good American Family’ Scores Third Biggest Finale Audience To Date For A Hulu Original
Image
Good American Family ended its run with a sizable audience on Disney+ and Hulu.

The finale drove 6.3M globally in its first six days of streaming, making it the biggest finale of the year across the two streamers, per Disney.

In fact, Disney also says its the third most-viewed finale ever for a Hulu Original, though the company didn’t give details on the top two finales for comparison.

Good American Family, which dramatizes the headline-capturing adoption of Natalia Grace, did appear to be generating quite a bit of buzz for Disney, consistently ranking in the top five on the Hulu Top 15 Today list every day since launch. That success carried over into social platforms as well, where the series scored the most TikTok engagements, shares, and new followers of all scripted Hulu Originals in 2025.

Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias,...

‘Good American Family’ Achieves Hulu’s No. 3 Most-Watched Finale Ever With 6.3 Million Views in Six Days
Image
The finale of “Good American Family,” the Hulu limited series based on the adoption of Natalia Grace, reached 6.3 million views in its first six days of streaming.

That makes the episode Hulu’s third-most-watched finale of all time, as well as the biggest finale of 2025 thus far across both Hulu and Disney+, according to Disney. These comparisons are based on data gathered across all season finales, not first seasons or final seasons alone, with views being calculated by dividing total time streamed by an episode’s runtime.

“Good American Family” stars Ellen Pompeo, Mark Duplass and Imogen Faith Reid as the Barnett family. Per the logline, the series follows “a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not...

‘Good American Family’ Star Imogen Faith Reid On Natalia Grace’s “Relatable” Fight For Control Over Her Own Life In Hulu Series: “She Just Wants To Be Seen And Heard”
Image
Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family.

There isn’t necessarily closure to be found in finale of Hulu’s Good American Family.

With Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) acquitted on child abuse charges, Natalia Grace is left with few paths for retribution, especially since the court still considers her a legal adult. In the final moments of the limited series, Imogen Faith Reid’s Natalia still tries to appeal to her former adoptive father in hopes that he might one day understand the pain he caused her via his complicity.

By that point, it’s easy to understand why Natalia is so distrustful of others. She seems to be pushing everyone away, even those who tried to help her. But, what might come across as Natalia isolating herself is actually her, finally, taking control of her own life after so many years...

Ellen Pompeo, Imogen Faith Reid, Mark Duplass and Showrunners Explain Their Natalia Grace Ending
Image
[This story contains spoilers from the Good American Family season finale.]

Now that Good American Family has released its final episode, viewers have seen the full intent of the Hulu’s narrative project about Natalia Grace.

The eight-episode limited series, which is inspired by Grace’s viral real-life story, was first told from the perspectives of Kristine and Michael Barnett, the Indiana husband-and-wife who adopted Ukrainian-born Grace in 2010, and who are played by Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass. Halfway through, the series flipped to being told from the point of view of Grace, played by Imogen Faith Reid, and later introduced Grace’s next adoptive parent Cynthia Mans, played by Christina Hendricks.

The differing perspectives, which proved to be contradictory, had been promised by creator Katie Robbins. “We start the story in Kristine and Michael Barnett’s version of events and that slowly starts to shift over time, and we’re led to question if our...

A Good American Family season 2 does have more story to tell, but that's not what we need
Image
The full season of Good American Family is now streaming on Hulu, and we're still left reeling at the injustice Natalia Grace faces in court. The finale does end on a bit of a justice-filled note, if you can call it that. Or at least as close to justice as you can get in those circumstances. Though anyone who knows the real-life story knows that's not where Natalia's tale ends. So is there a possibility for a season 2?

At the time of this writing, Hulu has not renewed or cancelled the drama so we don't know if there will be a Good American Family season 2. The writers did tell a very specific story, and a specific part of the true story in the first season. With that being said, the creative team themselves may want to leave it there and not necessarily continue telling more.

In speaking with TV Insider,...

A ‘roller coaster’ of perspectives: ‘Good American Family’ creator on the show’s unique structure and breakout star Imogen Faith Reid
Image
Good American Family, Hulu's gripping limited series about Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born orphan who becomes the center of controversy after being adopted — and later abandoned — by her American family, aired its final episode on April 30.

The ripped-from-the-headlines drama stars Ellen Pompeo and Mark Duplass as Natalia's adoptive parents, Kristine and Michael Barnett, alongside newcomer Imogen Faith Reid as Natalia, with supporting performances from Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.

"Hulu came to me with the idea of doing a narrative version of this story back in 2020," creator Katie Robbins (who also served as showrunner alongside Sarah Sutherland) tells Gold Derby. "I'd heard vaguely of the story, and it was a little bit in the public consciousness, but not as deeply rooted as it is now. I went on a deep dive expedition reading as much as I could get my hands on — articles, watching interviews — and I was...

Good American Family episode 8 review: Kristine manipulates like no other (Finale)
Image
As we saw in the pervious episode, episode 7 of Good American Family last week, the court ruling to change Natalia's age did not go in her favor. And once again in Good American Family episode 8, "Blood on Her Hands," the court system let Natalia down once again. Here's a review of the season finale episode on Hulu. Spoilers Below.

Good American Family - “Blood on Her Hands” - With the world watching, Natalia and the Barnetts face off in the court of law and the court of public opinion. (Disney/Ser Baffo) Ellen Pompeo, Diandra Lyle

In the past couple of episodes it's been alluded that Kristine is not telling the truth, but it shows the most in the finale. Every witness that could testify on her and Michael's behalf, she comes up with an excuse why they can't use them. We see as they speak to Natalia and the...

‘Good American Family’ Bosses Break Down Finale Twist That Tanked Natalia’s Trial: ‘It’s the Scariest Thing About the Show’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Good American Family” Episode 8.

“Good American Family” ended its eight-episode run with a harsh verdict in Natalia Grace’s trial, but the young girl still found some poetic justice by the end of Hulu’s limited series.

Episode 8, titled “Blood on Her Hands,” followed as Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid) and her new family braced for the trial against Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) in an effort to get justice for he and Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) abandoning her, as well as correcting her age so she would once again be recognized as a child by the courts. Though damning evidence against the Barnetts seemed to signal a win for Natalia, a legal technicality stopped her lawyers from using any evidence or testimony that referred to her as a child — giving Michael an easy win in court.

“That’s the scariest thing about the show. Even with...

'Good American Family' Season 2? Renewal Status Revealed for Hulu TV Show
Image
Good American Family is coming to an end on Wednesday (April 30).

The show stars Ellen Pompeo, Mark Dupluss, and Imogen Faith Reid.

Here’s a plot summary: “Told from multiple points of view, as a means to explore issues of perspective, bias, and trauma, this compelling drama is inspired by the disturbing stories surrounding a Midwestern couple who adopts a girl with a rare form of dwarfism. But as they begin to raise her alongside their three biological children, mystery emerges around her age and background, and they slowly start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. As they defend their family from the daughter they’ve grown to believe is a threat, she fights her own battle to confront her past and what her future holds, in a showdown that ultimately plays out in the tabloids and the courtroom.”

Was Kristine Barnett’s Abuse of Natalia the Breaking Point? Good American Family Exposes a Shocking Truth
Image
Good American Family dives deep into one of the most controversial adoption cases, the story of Natalia Grace. Based on real events, the show follows Kristine and Michael Barnett, an Indiana couple who adopted Natalia, a Ukrainian girl with a rare form of dwarfism, only to later claim she was an adult masquerading as a child.

Their accusations spiraled into media frenzy, legal battles, and public outrage. And Episode 7 of the Hulu series reveals a shocking confession after Michael admits that not only was Natalia indeed a child, but that Kristine had abused her. The revelation turns the story upside down, leading to serious criminal charges against the couple.

Good American Family Episode 7 reveals Kristine Barnett’s alleged abuse of Natalia Grace

‘Good American Family’ Creators on Finding Justice for Natalia Grace Through TV & What It’d Take to Make Season 2
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for all eight episodes of Good American Family.] Good American Family, by its very existence, is another part of the media-frenzied saga of Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid in the series). The fact of its meta relevance loomed large for the co-showrunners of the miniseries, Katie Robbins and Sarah Sutherland, from the series’ very inception. However, Robbins, who created the miniseries for Hulu, and Sutherland both embraced the opportunity to employ some of the stylistic elements of their former collaboration, The Affair, to truly showcase the finer details of what happened and put audiences into the shoes of everyone involved, however contradictory those perspectives truly were. The show’s structure — switching from the perspectives of adoptive parents Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass) to that of Natalia halfway through — has a dizzying effect on its audience, and in the finale, we’re left wanting so much more … at least, in the ...

‘Good American Family’: Mark Duplass on Michael’s Meltdown & Victimhood as Natalia Grace Truth Comes Through
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Good American Family‘s finale, “Blood on Her Hands.”] Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) finally gets her day in court against the Barnetts in the finale of Good American Family, but it does not go anywhere near to plan. The attorneys for Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael (Mark Duplass) successfully avoid having Natalia’s age re-litigated at trial thanks to a past procedural error on the part of the state. So, despite the prosecution boasting a slew of witnesses who are ready and willing to attest to Natalia’s childhood — and the fact that the Barnetts knew of it when they abandoned and abused her — no one is allowed to speak to it. Michael is found not guilty, and the legal system has once again failed Natalia Grace. Before his exoneration, Michael does have a moment of reckoning in which he seems to realize what he’s done. Though Kristine...

Ellen Pompeo Dissects How Kristine Barnett Sinks To The “Lowest Point Of Victimhood” In ‘Good American Family’ Finale & Ponders Her Next Role Beyond Meredith Grey
Image
Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family.

In the finale of Hulu’s Good American Family, the last threads of Kristine Barnett’s (Ellen Pompeo) accusations against Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) firmly fall apart.

Mountains of evidence, including damning Facebook messages between Kristine and her husband Michael (Mark Duplass), and several expert witnesses testifying that Natalia was a child when she was abandoned by the couple turn just about everyone against Kristine — including her own biological children — after she managed for years to convince her friends and family (and the courts) that Natalia was an adult masquerading as a child, abusing Kristine and her children, and exploiting the family for money.

Frustratingly, and thanks to a frighteningly flawed judicial system, Natalia doesn’t win her case. Nobody is able to present most of this evidence in court, or even refer to her as a child.

Good American Family episode 7 is a successful penultimate episode heading into the finale (Review)
Image
With Good American Family last week ending on a more hopeful note, and not seeing Michael and Kristine very much, the couple is back in episode 7 this week. Now we get the point of view of the Barnetts and Natalia against one another, which is interesting. And Natalia comes face to face (kind of) with Michael. Here's our review of the episode on Hulu. Spoilers Below.

Good American Family - (Disney/Ser Baffo)Imogen Faith Reid Natalia's age change

So it's revealed that after that night in the garage and the officer suggested to Kristine and Michael that they could change Natalia's age, they did actually take her to a psychiatric hospital to stay in after all the doctor's visits and trying to get the changes made in court. And then I'm assuming they left her there a while longer while finding the apartment because just like everything else in her short life,...

The State of the Race

Can only one episode win a performer an Emmy for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or a Movie? That’s one of the main questions for the category this year, and one could argue both sides. With only four episodes, “Adolescence” is running the Limited Series conversation much in the same way fellow British Netflix series “Baby Reindeer” did last year.

Dulé Hill Talks ‘Good American Family’ Interrogation Scenes & Miscarriage of Justice for Natalia Grace
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Good American Family Episode 7, “If You Tell a Story Well Enough.”] The agony of injustice continues on Good American Family‘s latest episode. This time, we get a flashback to the moment when Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) finds out she’s been re-aged by the courts. She’s already locked away in an institution and is suddenly switched from the children’s wing to the adult ward; so she goes from telling innocent ghost stories with her friend to being threatened with shackles for misbehavior. The saddest part? She lost her Hercules bunny, the one thing that was ever hers from the Barnetts. The memory is part of the on-camera statement she’s decided to provide for Detective Drysdale (Dulé Hill), and it gives him an idea: Since Natalia wasn’t present for the re-aging hearing, she didn’t get due process, and they can petition for reconsideration. When to watch the conclusion of the Natalia Grace story in Good American Family on Hulu (Finale)
Image
The penultimate episode of Good American Family on Hulu, episode 7, really got into things where there were many revelations. Natalia didn't have representation when the. Barnetts went to court to change her legal age, and in speaking with multiple specialists they all say that they told Kristine and Michael that Natalia was a child and not an adult. Oof.

There's also the fact that something was up with that rude judge and he didn't even give Natalia the chance to speak at her change of guardianship hearing where Michael shows up and doesn't even look at her. He knows he and Kristine can be in serious trouble legally if Natalia's age gets changed. And he decides to work with her even though in the past, their marriage has basically fallen apart, and in the present they are divorced.

Why Natalia Grace Had Bloody Socks In Hulu's Good American Family, Explained
Image
Fans have been scratching their heads over this recurring image of bloody socks on the feet of Imogen Faith Reid's Natalia Grace in Good American Family.

Reid plays one of the main characters in the new Hulu thriller, which follows a family that turns its back on a young girl with dwarfism whom they adopt after suspicions begin to arise that she may not be exactly who she says she is.

The new streaming series marks a break-out for Reid, whose character is given much of the focus for its eight-episode run.

Good American Family episode 6 gets an A for an emotional, but hopeful, episode (Review)
Image
Last week's episode of Good American Family on Hulu was a difficult one to watch, seeing Natalia struggle all alone living by herself now. And even when she tries to make things right, somehow they get worse. Well, that continues in episode 6 this week. However, there's a bit more hope when we reach the end. Here's our review of the episode. Spoilers Below.

The last time we saw Natalia, she was having trouble with the day-to-day including getting the shower on, preparing food, and taking care of herself in general. And now that she's in the new home with so many stairs, something difficult in her condition, things are even worse. Plus she needs to walk to school, and it's not an easy trek.

The most difficult part is the blisters and injuries she gets from walking so much, which causes her feet to bleed. Then there's the fact that...

‘Good American Family’: Christina Hendricks Reflects on Playing the Complex Savior for Natalia Grace
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Good American Family Episode 6, “Not Today Satan.”] Good American Family was filmed before the real-life Natalia Grace had such an abrupt departure from the life of Cynthia Mans, which was captured in The Curious Case of Natalia Grace: The Final Chapter. However, the show still presciently — albeit, subtly — raises a question about the true intention of the woman who appears to be a hero for the suffering child: Was she truly an angel who swooped in and saved the day for this girl out of the goodness of her heart, or did she have an ulterior financial motive for helping Natalia? Episode 6 begins with Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid) struggling in the Ged class Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) is forcing her to take so she can become financially independent of the Barnetts. In part, she falls behind because the assignment is for Natalia to write about herself, and Kristine has threatened her...

‘Good American Family’ Star Imogen Faith-Reid Unpacks That Perspective-Shifting Episode
Image
Back when the mysterious scandal surrounding Natalia Grace Barnett made headlines, Imogen Faith-Reid — the actor who would one day play her — wasn’t aware of it. As gripping as the case was, it didn’t exactly make U.K. headlines, and Faith-Reid only came to learn of the story when she landed a starring role in Hulu’s “Good American Family.”

“I saw that it was an open casting, and saw that it was going to be filmed in America, and I genuinely was like, ‘Well, I’m not going to get that, but what can I do?,'” the actor recalled in an interview with IndieWire. “After three or four recalls, I got the job and it just felt so surreal. I was in a restaurant, I look at my phone, see the contract, and I genuinely just freaked out. It was such a surreal moment.”

In the series,...

Good American Family episode 5 finally gets to Natalia's Pov, and it will hurt your heart (Review)
Image
In the previous episode of Good American Family last week, episode 4, the final moments saw Kristine and Michael officially changing Natalia's age and sending her away to live by herself. And that's where today's new episode picks up, and it's heartbreaking. After waiting halfway through the season, we finally get to Natalia's point of view. Here's a review of episode 5 on Hulu. Spoilers Below.

Good American Family - “Almost Like a Prayer” - Imogen Faith Reid Natalia's life on her own

The episode first starts with Natalia speaking to an investigator, and she tells him that she did hide knives, repeats the mantra we keep hearing in the episode of she's 22 but looks young for her age, and more. At first, we're left wondering if this is really how she feels and the Barnetts are right about her, or is it perhaps a defense mechanism. Worse, it's fear.

‘Good American Family’ Star Imogen Faith Reid on ‘Heartbreaking’ Episode 5: Natalia Grace ‘Was Terrified of Kristine, and Michael Was Brainwashed’
Image
Spoiler Alert: This post contains spoilers for “Too Hurty Without It,” Episode 5 of “Good American Family,” now streaming on Hulu.

Living in England, “Good American Family” actress Imogen Faith Reid had never heard of Natalia Grace. “There was one story,” she says, about scouring the British media before her audition. It wasn’t until she got the part that Reid discovered Natalia’s story and all that had happened.

The Hulu series is a dramatization of the real-life events of Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael Barnett (Mark Duplass), the couple who adopted Natalia, a Ukrainian orphan with a rare and severe form of dwarfism. Each episode unfolds in flashback form, exploring what happened after the adoption. After exploring the Barnetts’ perspective, and recounting the events that led to them eventually being accused of neglect, in this week’s “Good American Family,” the series shifts to Natalia’s point of view.

‘Good American Family’ Star Unpacks the Painful Duty of Showing Natalia Grace’s Truth in Episode 5
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers for “Good American Family” Episode 5.

“Good American Family” put the spotlight on Kristine and Michael Barnett for the first half of its run on Hulu. With Episode 5, viewers get a painful look into their adoptive daughter Natalia Grace’s perspective.

Titled “Too Hurty Without It,” the episode picks up with Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Read) after Kristine (Ellen Pompeo) and Michael (Mark Duplass) dropped her off at the apartment they rented for her after legally changing her age to 22. But rather than staying on the point of view of the parents, the show stays with Natalia — an 8-year-old girl with dwarfism left to her own devices.

The harrowing installment follows Natalia struggling to keep up with her cleanliness — including washing her hair with dish soap in the sink because she can’t work the faucet for the shower — and relying on perishables, all the while...

‘Good American Family’: Imogen Faith Reid on That Devastating Switch to Natalia Grace’s Perspective
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers for Good American Family Episode 5, “Too Hurty Without It.”] The first four episodes of Good American Family are intentionally designed to keep viewers on the Barnetts’ side and fully sympathetic to Kristine’s (Ellen Pompeo) suspicion that Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) is a dangerous adult woman masquerading as a child to infiltrate and harm their family. Even the cinematography and musical mixes have horror bends at key moments. Seeing Natalia get dropped off at an apartment away from the boys at the end of Episode 4 brings a rush of relief. The fact that Kristine and Michael (Mark Duplass) continue to financially provide for her seems like an exceedingly altruistic move on their part, too. However, the second half of the show, beginning with Episode 5, flips the narrative entirely and continues the events through Natalia Grace’s eyes. Here, we see what has since been proven to be scientifically true: This...

Watch Disney Casting Directors Explain How They Chose Their Actors for ‘Only Murders,’ ‘Deli Boys,’ ‘Paradise,’ ‘Abbott Elementary,’ and More
Image
What does a casting director do? It’s one of the most important roles on any film or TV production, but there are a lot of misconceptions about the job. At IndieWire and Disney’s Pass the Remote panel on April 1 — a giddy TV FYC event that put top casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield, Josh Einsohn, Wendy O’Brien, Danielle Aufiero, Seth Yanklewitz, and Julie Ashton in front of a packed theater at Vidiots in Los Angeles — Yanklewitz said some people even think he and his peers are inherently “mean.”

“There are so many misconceptions,” said Yanklewitz about the business of casting. An industry veteran with credits on “New Girl,” “Black Hawk Down,” and more, Yanklewitz recently cast Hulu’s hit crime comedy “Deli Boys” for Pakistani-American creator Abdullah Saeed. Yanklewitz explained how a crash course in South Asian history helped make the casting process both more authentic and more inventive.

Ellen Pompeo’s New Hulu Series Gets Harsh Rotten Tomatoes Audience Score
Image
With a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Golden Globe nomination to her name, Ellen Pompeo's iconic run as Meredith Grey on Grey’s Anatomy has brought with it superstardom, with legions of doting followers supporting her every career move. However, her latest venture, Hulu's brand-new fictionalized version of the Natalia Grace story, Good American Family, has done little to spark excitement from her fanbase.

On review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, Good American Family has suffered a poor start to life, earning a less-than-impressive 55% from critics, and a much worse 28% audience score. These early responses, with the show only four episodes in to date, hint at a struggle to maintain viewership for the show, with a strong ensemble cast including Pompeo, Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid doing little to fend off the negative opinions.

For Pompeo, sadly, poor Rotten Tomatoes reception is nothing new in a career hit by misfires.

After That ‘Good American Family’ Midseason Ending, Mark Duplass Explains His Approach to Natalia Grace’s Adoptive Father
Image
Early on in Good American Family, viewers of the weekly Hulu series about the adoptive parents of Natalia Grace get a sense that they aren’t being told the full story.

The dramatization of the real-life national news story of Kristine and Michael Barnett adopting Grace, a Ukrainian child orphan with a rare and severe form of dwarfism, has been primarily unfolding in flashback to explore what allegedly happened after the Indiana husband-and-wife adopted Grace in 2010. But each episode opens with a flash-forward that gives even the most unassuming viewer (who hasn’t seen the headlines or watched the ID docuseries The Curious Case of Natalia Grace) hints that there is at least one unreliable narrator telling this story.

The first four episodes have explored the Barnetts’ point of view to explain why they end up being accused of neglect for abandoning Grace. Their adopted daughter was actually an adult...

Good American Family episode 4 takes the heartbreaking turn we knew was coming (Review)

The lives of the Barnetts continues to get messy in Good American Family. The previous episode, episode 3, saw Kristine's suspicions continue to grow and she and Michael even take Natalia to doctors to determine if she really is older than she says she is. There's also the beginnings of Kristine and Michael's conflicts as the two come to an ultimatum in the final moments. This week in episode 4, everything continues to escalate and we get to the heartbreaking point of the story we knew was coming. Here's our review of the episode on Hulu. Spoilers Below.

Kristine's savior complex

We start to get hints that perhaps Kristine has a savior complex, and she especially uses it on Michael. Back when they were young, he was clearly struggling with depression, almost jumping off a bridge into traffic before she saved him. And that's actually what leads to the two getting married.

“Taylor is such a good girl. I didn’t know her and she invited me to be in the video and I thought, ‘Oh, that will be fun.’ And I went and did the video. Honestly, it was the easiest thing. It was like an hour or two,” she told Hudson.

The “Bad Blood” music video also featured cameos by Selena Gomez, Zendaya, Gigi Hadid, Cara Delevingne, Mariska Hargitay and more.

‘Good American Family’ Co-Showrunner Explains How Episode 3 Leaves “Bread Crumbs” For An Unexpected Ending To Natalia Grace Series
Image
Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first three episodes of Hulu’s Good American Family.

By the third episode of Hulu’s Good American Family, audiences may very well be wondering how anyone can dispute that Natalia Grace terrorized her adopted family, the Barnetts, in the three years she lived with them.

But, as co-showrunner Sarah Sutherland warns, no one should jump to conclusions just yet.

“This episode is basically setting bread crumbs that will then get paid off in the end,” she tells Deadline.

By the end of Episode 3, Kristine Barnett (Ellen Pompeo) is good and well convinced that Natalia (Imogen Faith Reid) is out to get her. She thinks that Natalia is not actually a child, based on signs of puberty, and when she finds a used tampon under a piece of furniture while conducting a news interview with her son, Kristine flies off the handle.

How ‘The Affair’ Influenced the Natalia Grace Adaptation ‘Good American Family’
Image
[Warning: The following post contains Major spoilers about Good American Family Episode 3, “Ghosts Everywhere.”] Good American Family gets very dark on Wednesday’s (March 26) new episode as the veil of perfection put on by Kristine Barnett (Ellen Pompeo) starts to fall and the show’s conceit of subtly (and then not-so-subtly) presenting dual perspectives of the well-known true-crime tale comes into clearer view. In the episode, Kristine furiously gathers new evidence to support her suspicions that Natalia Grace (Imogen Faith Reid) is a fully grown woman masquerading as a child and is thus a danger to her family. First, she finds socks covered in blood hidden in Natalia’s closet, and later, during a local TV news interview, she spots a bloodied tampon on the living room floor. The family’s primary care doctor, who lives in regret of his initial diagnosis of their oldest child and thus buys Kristine’s every word, suggests a battery of specialists to consult,...

Ellen Pompeo's First Leading Show Since Grey's Anatomy Debuts With Underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
Ellen Pompeo's first leading role in a television series since Grey's Anatomy debuts with an underwhelming Rotten Tomatoes score. Pompeo made her first on-screen appearance in an episode of NBC's legal drama Law & Order before guest-starring in various television series, including the comedy Strangers with Candy, the medical drama Strong Medicine, and the iconic sitcom Friends. Though her film career has struggled to take off, her overall career took a significant turn in 2002 when she garnered attention for her performance in the romantic drama Moonlight Mile.

In 2005, Pompeo was cast as the titular Dr. Meredith Grey in ABC's medical drama, Grey's Anatomy, following her journey from a surgical intern to a fully certified doctor and eventually the hospital's chief of general surgery. The character became immensely popular, establishing Pompeo as one of television's most acclaimed and highest-paid actresses. By Grey's Anatomy season 19, Pompeo stepped back as a series regular,...

Ellen Pompeo is scrubbing out of Grey’s Anatomy.

In a way she never has before.

The actress is currently starting in Good American Family, a brand new drama on Hulu whose first two episodes were made available on March 19.

Critics call Hulu’s ‘Good American Family’ a ‘half-hearted,’ ‘mad and messy saga’ that is redeemed if you ‘watch to the end’
Image
The first two episodes of Hulu's ripped-from-the-headlines limited series Good American Family debuted on the streamer March 19 — and critics are divided.

The "mad and messy saga" is based on the story of Natalia Grace (played by newcomer Imogen Faith Reid), a Ukrainian-born orphan with a rare form of dwarfism who is adopted by a Midwestern family — only to be abandoned a year later when they start to suspect she may not be who she says she is. Golden Globe nominee Ellen Pompeo (Grey's Anatomy) executive produces and stars as Kristine Barnett, Natalia's adoptive mother, and Emmy winner Mark Duplass (The Morning Show) plays Michael Barnett, Kristine's optimistic husband. The project also features Christina Hendricks, Sarayu Blue, and Dulé Hill.

Told from multiple perspectives, Good American Family currently has a 40 percent at Rotten Tomatoes and a "generally favorable" MetaCritic score of 63 (based on eight reviews). Critics are split...

'Good American Family' Review: Ellen Pompeo Adopts an 'Orphan'
Image
Fascinating, oftentimes maddening, and occasionally overdramatic, Good American Familyis thoroughly addictive television. Like its limited-series cousins, The Act, Adolescence, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the Hulu series presents a seemingly harmless child—or family—that are not who they appear to be. Or maybe they are. Either way, the tension builds to such a degree that you want to reach inside the screen and shake some of the characters you’re watching.

That’s a good sign that we’re in for a gripping ride here in a story starring Ellen Pompeo (Grey’s Anatomy), Mark Duplass, and Imogen Faith Reid. Creator/executive producer Katie Robbins shares showrunner credit with executive producer Sarah Sutherland in a tale (told from different perspectives) that is inspired by the mind-bending real-life events of Ukrainian orphan Natalia Grace Barnett, who was thrust into the public eye when her adoptive parents claimed she was not a child,...
