In the late 1980s, he aided with the restoration of Villa Windsor, the Paris home leased by the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, and served as curator of the collections.

He was hired as the personal valet of Mohamed Al-Fayed, who met Johnson while he was working at the Hôtel Ritz Paris, which Al-Fayed owned. Al-Fayed was reportedly impressed by Johnson's knowledge of British royalty and high society.

He served as the personal valet of Prince Edward, Duke of Windsor (formerly King Edward VIII), for over thirty years, after initially meeting when Edward was serving as governor of the Bahamas. He continued working for Wallis, Duchess of Windsor, for a year but resigned to spend more time caring for his children.
