Great-grandfather Tim Mara founded the New York Giants. Great-grandfather Art Rooney founded the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Kate and her younger sister Patricia have their mother's maiden name, Rooney, as their middle name, but her sister takes it as her first name and is known professionally as Rooney Mara.

Kate and her sister Rooney Mara both appeared in Best Picture Oscar nominated films in 2011. Rooney was in La red social (2010), Kate in 127 horas (2010).

Her younger sister Rooney Mara is also an actress.

Mara has stated she comes from a "huge" family. Her father is one of 11 children. She has 22 aunts and uncles and 40 cousins.
