Boxing Heavyweight World Champion in 1995

He was awarded the M.B.E. (Member of the Order of the British Empire) in the 1990 Queen's Honours List for his services to boxing.

He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York in June 2003.

He was born at Hammersmith Hospital in Hammersmith, London, England but raised in Wandsworth, London, England. His father Robert Bruno immigrated from the Dominican Republic. His mother, Lynette Bruno, was a district nurse and Pentecostal Lay teacher from Jamaica. His father died in 1975.

He attended Swaffield Primary and Oak Hill schools in Sussex, England. He was boxing at 9 years old at the local Wandsworth Boys Club.

A notorious photograph exists of Bruno shaking the hand of Yorkshire Ripper Peter Sutcliffe at Broadmoor psychiatric hospital, with Sir Jimmy Savile in the background. According to Bruno, this was a sick trick played on him by Savile, who had introduced them to each other but only afterwards told him it was Sutcliffe. Bruno said he would never have knowingly shaken the hand of the Yorkshire Ripper.

Opened "The Crystal Centre", the Mental Health Wing of the Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford, in 2009.
