Simply put, one of the greatest films ever made. The ultimate fantasy adventure film, even to this day. It's a great telling of the myth, with amazing monsters (the hydra and Talos are visual standouts), good acting, a thrilling story, great scale and atmosphere. The skeleton scene is a technical marvel rarely matched. A must own for any film fan!
Darker, messier and more flawed than the previous Sinbad movie. But arguably a more effective and thrilling tale of swashbuckling adventure. The monsters (especially the centaur) are among the scariest of his filmography and Tom Baker stands out as a fun yet intimidating villain. While not the popular Sinbad film, it might be the most effective one.
A perfect fantasy adventure film for the whole family. The cyclops is the quintessential Harryhausen monster, though it is backed up by an awesome dragon and the roc. Not a flaw to be found in the first adventure harryhausen would have with Sinbad. The film that gave audiences everywhere the adventure of a lifetime.
The last Harryhausen movie and the last of its kind of film. Both went with a bang, in one of the quintessential Greek myth movies. The most ambitious, big budgeted, star studded and epic scoped of his filmography, and it delivers. It's a special film, but one that makes you wonder what also could have been.
Harryhausens first credited feature film. Joe is a creation of both his and Willis O'Brian, though sources say Harryhausen did most of the animation. A fun and charming family fantasy from the team behind King Kong. Beautiful in a lot of ways and ceaselessly lovable. Another great performance from Robert Armstrong too.
- DirectorNathan JuranReparto principalWilliam HopperJoan TaylorThomas Browne HenryThe first U.S. spaceship to Venus crash-lands off the coast of Sicily on its return trip. A dangerous, lizard-like creature comes with it and quickly grows gigantic.10/10. THE best of the 50s atomic monster bmovies. There's no boring or dull points in it as the creature is nearly constantly on screen and the action is relentless towards the end. It's a blast from start to finish, and the Ymir is one of the most iconic of Harryhausens monsters.
A clear passion project. Gwangi himself is one of Harryhausens greatest creations, and is probably his most expensive and sympathetic. The story is great, the action great, the effects top notch, and the entire film is charming and fun, even if it takes a little time to get going at first.
Less a Harryhausen movie and more a Hammer Horror explanation piece, this is delightfully sleezy and mean spirited. The poster explains why it's remembered, but it also had some of the best dinosaurs in film history, committed performances, shockingly good directing and a true sense of atmosphere and scale. The triceratops vs ceratosaurus fight is a stand out for Harryhausen monster clashes.
It has the same issues a lot of Harryhausens movies did (his work elevating pretty mediocre projects), but when the delightful monsters are off screen, the acting and characters carry the movie. It's too long and not very quick, but more than worth the ticket price.
Sinbad's worst outing of the 3 is still a joy to watch. A little too long, Patrick Wayne is a distractingly American Sinbad and probably has Harryhausens least interesting creatures in the ghouls, wasp, walrus and tragically wasted Minoton. But the adventure is fun, the Baboon is great, and the tone makes it joyful. The fight between the sabretooth tiger and the friendly troglodyte might be the best clash of monster in his filmography.
- DirectorFred F. SearsReparto principalHugh MarloweJoan TaylorDonald CurtisExtraterrestrials traveling in high-tech flying saucers contact a scientist as part of a plan to enslave the inhabitants of Earth.7/10. One of the best disaster bmovies of the era. The aliens look terrible and it rakes a bit to get going. But the destruction and bmovie cheese is worth the price of admission.
A charming and fun story, perfect for fans of classic Doctor Who. Unfortunately it's pacing is a little off and it doesn't stick with you too much after it finishes.
A 50s disaster bmovie that works well for what it is. What it is being mostly dull, but then completely spectacular when the octopus goes on the warpath.
His first solo movie. A classic drive-in bmovie. The stuff with the Beast is great, but outside of that there is little to enjoy. It is cool how it inspired Godzilla though.
- DirectorJack SherReparto principalKerwin MathewsJo MorrowJune ThorburnAfter being shipwrecked, a man finds himself on an island inhabited by tiny people, who soon make plans for him.6/10. A fine children's fairy tale film that boasts great effects. But not a memorable one.
