Tote Mädchen lügen nicht

  • Hannah Baker: You've heard of the butterfly effect, right? That if a butterfly flaps its wings at just the right time in just the right place. It can cause a hurricane thousands of miles away. It's chaos theory, but see, chaos theory isn't exactly about chaos. It's about how a tiny change in a big system can affect everything.
  • Hannah Baker: High school is bullshit.
  • Clay Jensen: Yeah. Don't disagree, but any specifics?
  • Hannah Baker: I wish there was a button to fast-forward you through all the shitty parts in life straight to the good parts.
  • Clay Jensen: And where are the good parts?
  • Hannah Baker: College. In New York City.
  • Clay Jensen: Why New York?
  • Hannah Baker: The minute I get there, I can be someone else. Whoever I want to be.
  • Clay Jensen: But who you are now is okay.
  • Clay Jensen: [When Clay sees Alex tearing down some of the suicide awareness posters off the walls] Alex...
  • Alex Standall: Go back to class, Clay.
  • Clay Jensen: What are you doing?
  • Alex Standall: I'm cleaning up. What, they think these are gonna save someone's life? "Suicide's not an option"? Yeah, you know what? Clearly it is an option, you know? Why don't they put up a poster that says "Don't be a fucking dick to people"? Why don't we put up that poster?
  • Clay Jensen: Yeah, that would be cool with me. I try not to be a dick.
  • Alex Standall: Yeah, we all try.
  • Hannah Baker: You can hear rumors, but you can't know them.
  • Courtney Crimsen: Mrs. Baker. Hi. I'm Courtney Crimsen. I'm so sorry for your loss. I hope you like it. People keep adding to it. Um, every day there's another card or more flowers.
  • Olivia Baker: All these people were Hannah's friends?
  • Courtney Crimsen: Mm-hmm. She had so many friends and we all miss her so much.
  • Olivia Baker: Anyone who knew Hannah would know that she hated roses. She thought they were a cliche.
  • [walks away]
  • Kevin Porter: [to Clay and Alex] Guys, where are you supposed to be?
  • Alex Standall: That's a heavy question. That's, like, existential.
  • Alex Standall: I wish I never touched that fucking list.
  • Clay Jensen: Why did you?
  • Alex Standall: I don't know. Bryce started it. All the guys were working on it at lunch.
  • Clay Jensen: Why are you even friends with those guys? Justin, Zach, Bryce.
  • Alex Standall: No, see, I'm not friends with Bryce, but the other guys. Zach and I got to be friends last year, and he's always hanging around Justin. They thought it was funny and stuff. My dad was relieved that I had male friends. Also, didn't totally suck at school that Justin Foley liked me back then.
  • Clay Jensen: Okay, back then. Why are you friends now?
  • Alex Standall: Because if I stop hanging out, they're gonna know something's up. I shouldn't even be talking to you.
  • Alex Standall: So not only did everyone think Hannah gave it up for me I took away her best friend. And who knows? If she had a friend, maybe...
  • Clay Jensen: It's okay, man.
  • Alex Standall: No, it's not. It's not okay. You want it to be okay because then you get off the hook, but you're losing your shit. You want to think whatever you did couldn't be why Hannah killed herself, but the truth is that I did. I killed Hannah Baker! And Justin killed Hannah Baker. And Jessica. And you. We all killed Hannah Baker.
  • Clay Jensen: Maybe you need some chamomile tea.
  • Alex Standall: 'Cause people are listening? Well, it's too bad no one paid attention before.
  • Hannah Baker: [to Clay] Have you noticed anything weird about Alex lately?
  • Clay Jensen: Um... well, his hair's weird, but that's not new.
  • Hannah Baker: His hair is awesome.
  • Clay Jensen: I didn't say it wasn't awesome, it's just, like, distinctive.
  • Hannah Baker: And he's an amazing dresser. I mean, you could take a few lessons.
  • Clay Jensen: I totally could and I'm glad we got around to my failings because I was wondering when we would get to that.
  • Hannah Baker: [to Clay] Morning, Astronomy Boy.
  • Clay Jensen: Better than "Helmet", I guess.
  • Hannah Baker: I feel they work together.
  • Hannah Baker: The butterfly effect. It started with Justin, then on to you, Alex. And the rest of you. Maybe these tapes will start a new butterfly effect. Who knows? Everything affects everything.
  • Hannah Baker: Chaos theory. Sounds dramatic, but it's not. Ask a mathematician. Better yet, ask someone who's been in a hurricane.
  • Hannah Baker: Maybe you think I'm being silly. I'm some stupid girl who gets all worked up over a little thing, but little things matter. For instance, you never told me when you started dating Jessica, but I remember just how it ended. With your list.
  • Clay Jensen: [to Alex] Is "Gloomy Sunday" really a song?
  • Alex Standall: Yeah. Google "Hungarian Suicide Song."
  • Clay Jensen: I'll take your word for it.
  • Clay Jensen: [to Hannah] I don't know if you know this, but there's a penumbral lunar eclipse at 11:49.
  • Hannah Baker: A what?
  • Clay Jensen: The Earth's shadow is the penumbra. Tonight, the moon is gonna pass through it. Last show is at 9:00 and if we clean fast and we probably can because no kids are coming to that English movie because it's boring, we could get out in time and I could maybe point it out to you. If you want.
  • Hannah Baker: You want to show me the moon?
  • Clay Jensen: There would be a shadow. Not like a full eclipse. You wouldn't exactly see the... but, yeah.
  • Hannah Baker: [chuckles] You should, like, patent yourself. And, yes, I will look at the moon with you. I might even howl.
  • Tyler Down: [to Alex and Clay] What are you doing?
  • Alex Standall: I'm recruiting Clay for the Illuminati. You want to join?
  • Tyler Down: Alex, you should not joke about the Illuminati, first of all. Trust me.
  • Hannah Baker: Alex, maybe you think I'm being silly, like I get my titties in a twist over the tiniest things, but you didn't walk that hall. You didn't feel those eyes on you. You've never heard those whispers. You think I'm taking it all way too seriously, right? But here's the thing: You've never been a girl.
  • Zach Dempsey: [When Hannah barges into the boys' locker room to confront Alex] Hannah, you know you can't be in here.
  • Hannah Baker: Why not? You've all been staring at my ass all day.
  • Clay Jensen: [to Skye about her tattoo] Is that a lizard on your neck?
  • Skye Miller: It's an alligator.
  • Clay Jensen: How many do you have now? Tattoos.
  • Skye Miller: Why? Do you want to give your opinion? Everyone else feels entitled to.
  • Clay Jensen: No, I just I just wondered. I like the alligator.
  • Skye Miller: Remember that story I used to tell about my parents every time we drove over a bridge?
  • Clay Jensen: I remember. No, wait, I forgot.
  • Skye Miller: When I was little, I used to cry every time we drove over a bridge. I don't know why. My mom used to try to distract me...
  • Clay Jensen: And she would tell you to look for a purple alligator in the water and you'd be so busy looking you'd forget you were scared.
  • Skye Miller: Yeah, that's the story.
  • Hannah Baker: It seems like nothing. Until the hurricane hits. Because when you put my name on that list, you put a target on my... well, it wasn't just my ass. You made it open season on Hannah Baker.
  • Clay Jensen: [to Alex] So, did you do it? I mean, did you put Hannah and Jessica on that list?
  • Alex Standall: You didn't know that? But you saw it.
  • Clay Jensen: Yeah, but I didn't, like, trace the handwriting.
  • Alex Standall: I didn't think it was that big a deal.
  • Clay Jensen: Do you think she's right? Does everything that happened to her go back to you and that list?
  • Alex Standall: Well, I think it all started the night of Jessica's party.
  • Clay Jensen: What did she say about Jessica's party? Does she mention me there?
  • Alex Standall: Where are you in the tapes?
  • Clay Jensen: I'm almost through yours.
  • Alex Standall: Holy shit, Clay. I mean, I listened to 'em all in one night the first time.
