However, over the last few years, the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned network has faced streaming competitors with bulging wallets.

This is what made this morning’s news that HBO scored half of the nominations for a Golden Globe in the Best Performance In Stand-Up Comedy On Television category, going head-to-head with Netflix, which has the other three specials, significant.

Heading into Sunday’s Golden Globe ceremony, Ricky Gervais was not confident he would win the first-ever award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance. “I’m nominated for another Golden Globe tonight,” he wrote early Sunday about his “Armageddon” Netflix special. “Won’t win, but it’s nice to still be up there in the mix, flying the flag.” Well, he did end up winning, but he wasn’t in attendance to accept his prize.

Hours after the ceremony wrapped up, Gervais posted a three-word acceptance speech on social media as only he could: “I f***ing won!” The comedian accompanied the remark with a photo of him holding a Golden Globe from when he hosted the ceremony years earlier — see below.

Gervais later followed that up with some more, shall we say, heartfelt words of wisdom.

Heading into the 2024 Golden Globes on Sunday, January 7, “Succession” was the show to beat as it scored a record nine nominations — more than any other television show in history. Some of the other top nominees on the TV side were “The Bear” and “Only Murders in the Building” with five noms apiece, and “The Crown” with four bids. No, you’re not going crazy: the Golden Globes will be presenting a brand new award for Best TV Stand-Up Comedy Performance during the Sunday, January 7 telecast. The six inaugural nominees are some of the funniest emcees working today, but it’s Chris Rock who is predicted to make history by becoming the category’s first-ever winner, per Gold Derby odds. He’s nominated for his buzzed-about live Netflix special, “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage,” which drew eyeballs for the way in which he addressed the infamous Will Smith slap at the Oscars.

Rock has leading 18/5 odds to prevail on Sunday night. The other nominees, in descending order, are: “Trevor Noah: Where Was I” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Ricky Gervais: Armageddon” (Netflix) at 9/2 odds, “Wanda Sykes: I’m an Entertainer” (Netflix) at 11/2 odds, “Sarah Silverman: Someone You Love” (HBO) at 6/1 odds, and “Amy Schumer: Emergency Contact” (Netflix) at 15/2 odds.

The prophecy may now come to pass: There’s a good chance Jeremy Allen White wins a Golden Globe Award for Season 2 of “The Bear,” a week before he wins an Emmy… for Season 1 of “The Bear.” Ditto the show’s Ayo Edibiri and Ebon Moss-Bachrach.

And so goes the most unusual TV awards season ever, where a delayed Primetime Emmys — with its June 1, 2022, to May 31, 2023, eligibility window — falls smack into a Globes, Critics’ Choice and guild awards season with a January to December, 2023 time frame.

The Hollywood strikes also may have had an impact on the even more limited-than-usual showing for broadcast networks at the Globes. ABC’s “Abbott Elementary” was the sole broadcast nominee, and even it saw its fortunes drop to just two nods: Best comedy and best female actor in a comedy (Quinta Brunson).

In addition to a top-to-bottom organization overall, the Golden Globes has added two new categories for its next awards, for cinematic and box office achievement and stand-up comedy performance on television.

The creation for a box office achievement award is clearly a move to attract viewers who have tuned out kudofests in recent decades because they tend to focus on little-seen movies. The category honors artistically outstanding films that have grossed more than $150 million, with at least $100 million coming from the domestic box office, or have commensurate streaming viewership confirmed by a “trusted industry source.” Films released after Nov. 22 may qualify if their projected box office or viewership meets the benchmarks.

Sarah Silverman has inked a deal with Lemonada Media for a new season of her podcast, The Sarah Silverman Podcast.

The latest podcast will premiere on the banner on Oct. 19, with new episodes available weekly. Silverman’s comedy podcast debuted in 2020 via Kast Media and has the comedian, actress and writer continuing to dish on her personal and professional lives, politics and other headline news.

She also responds to listener voicemails with her signature sharp wit. “When life gives you lemons, make (a deal with) Lemonada. Can’t wait to start my new life with them!” Silverman said in a statement on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, May 23, HBO Max is going away — when it will be reskinned as Max, stocked with more than twice the total amount of programming. Max’s expanded streaming menu includes the addition of hundreds of episodes of Discovery+ shows, and it’s set to get dozens of new TV shows and movies over the next month.

The new Max will feature 35,000 hours of programming, more than double what has been available on HBO Max. According to Warner Bros. Discovery, the service will be continuously updated with fresh content, averaging more than 40 new movie titles and TV seasons per month.
