The film was booed when it debuted at the Cannes Film Festival.
This is Atom Egoyan's second successive film based on child abduction - the previous being Devil's Knot (2013). Both films starred Kevin Durand and Bruce Greenwood.
Although the movie was a rare attempt by the Canadian film industry to make a mass market thriller that would compete just like a Hollywood movie, such as with the casting of popular actor Ryan Reynolds in the lead role, the movie didn't do very well at the Canadian box office, not even returning its advertising costs. Subsequent discussion in the press brought up several theories to explain the box office failure, including the movie getting generally negative reviews, distributor Entertainment One not giving the movie an adequate marketing campaign, and audiences being perplexed and disappointed by director Atom Egoyan giving the movie an extremely non-linear story with little thrills and suspense.
Kevin Durand previously worked with Scott Speedman in Gangsters (2011) and with Ryan Reynolds in Smokin' Aces (2006).
