Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
‘The Crown': Emma Corrin on the Ingenious Way They Built Tension for That Diana-Camilla Lunch Scene
Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
A version of this story about “The Crown” and Emma Corrin appears in the Down to the Wire issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.

In Princess Diana’s infamous television interview with Martin Bashir, the late wife of Prince Charles revealed that there were “three of us in this marriage,” referring to Charles’ mistress (and now wife) Camilla Parker Bowles. And in filming Season 4 of Netflix’s “The Crown,” Emma Corrin, who portrayed Diana Spencer, took those words to heart during their performance.

Of course, that became even easier to do once director Benjamin Caron decided to bring together Corrin, Emerald Fennell (who played Bowles) and Josh O’Connor (Prince Charles) to prep for a scene that would only include Fennell and Corrin — because he wanted the three-person marriage to be felt by Corrin in full during Diana’s uncomfortable lunch with Camilla.

“It was one of the scenes we rehearsed quite a lot,...

‘The Crown’ Clip Shows Off Emma Corrin’s Complete ‘Phantom of the Opera’ Song
Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
Season 4 of The Crown gifted us with Emma Corrin’s Diana Spencer, a warm and welcome presence in the otherwise frosty Buckingham Palace. Where the fictional royal family was icy and emotionally stunted, Corrin’s Princess Di was open-hearted and vulnerable. She was easy to latch onto and even easier to fall in love with, especially […]

‘The Crown’: Emma Corrin Sings More ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ In Unreleased Clip
Image
Outside of the Limited Series categories, there appear to be few close races this Emmy season. One exception is Best Actress, where frontrunner “The Crown’s” Emma Corrin faces a potentially historic win from “Pose’s” M.J. Rodriguez. With voting set to begin on Thursday, it’s no surprise that Netflix wants to remind viewers of Corrin’s acclaimed performance as the late Princess Diana.

In the third episode of season four, “Avalanche,” Diana gives Prince Charles (Josh O’Connor) a videotape of her singing “All I Ask of You” from the musical “Phantom of the Opera” as a wedding gift.

‘Company’ Sets December Broadway Return With Katrina Lenk & Patti LuPone
Image
Company, the Marianne Elliott-directed revival of the classic Stephen Sondheim-George Furth musical starring Katrina Lenk and Patti LuPone, will resume performances at Broadway’s Bernard B. Jacobs Theatre in December, producers announced today.

The production will being previews on Dec. 20, with an opening night planned for Jan. 9, 2022.

Company is a show about connecting, about the necessity of having other people in our lives,” Sondheim said in a statement. “This past year, with its isolation, has reminded us all of that need for togetherness, so I’m happy that Marianne Elliott’s startling and exhilarating production is coming back to Broadway.”

Tickets for the musical go on sale tomorrow. Company played nine preview performances before the March 12, 2020 Broadway shutdown.

Phantom Thread: The Phantom Of Hollywood is a Charmingly Uneven Love Letter to the Glory Days of Tinsel Town
Image
Hello, everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to do an installment of my Phantom Thread series, but I’m finally back on the beat and this newest entry is quite an oddball in the realm of Phantom of the Opera-related adaptations. Directed by Gene Levitt and starring the likes of Peter Lawford, Jack Cassidy, Broderick Crawford, and Jackie Coogan (who most genre fans know from his role as Uncle Fester in the Addams Family TV series), this made-for-tv movie first aired on CBS in February 1974 and features a mysterious masked entity who is stalking the backlot of Worldwide Films as the studio prepares to sell the property off to the highest bidder.

And while there’s a lot of unevenness to The Phantom of Hollywood that makes its plotting feel choppy at times, as someone who adores the history of Old Hollywood, I...

Dracula and Frankenstein and the Mummy, Oh My! Universal’s Classic Monsters Inspire Art Initiative
Image
To honor the milestone anniversaries of some of cinema’s scariest legends, Universal Pictures launched the Universal Monsters: Out of the Shadows contest, which will be hosted on the Tongal content creation platform.

The art initiative calls for U.S. residents to create an original character inspired by Universal’s classic cast of monsters, including Dracula, The Wolfman, Frankenstein, Bride of Frankenstein, Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Mummy, Phantom of the Opera, Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Invisible Man. It runs from Feb. 11 through March 4 and hopes to discover visionary artists.

“We are seeking creatives who are drawn to the narrative that the Universal Monsters are the original outsiders, misfits and misunderstood,” said Holly Goline, a Universal film executive in charge of Universal Monsters.

Tasked with telling a story through one image of a creature, artists must create original, imaginative storytelling through their artistic medium of choice, whether...

Gerard Butler at an event for Gesetz der Rache (2009)
Gerard Butler continues to make successful movies, as witnessed by his continuing Fallen series, but his career quite clearly reached its high point a decade and a half ago, when he starred in 2004’s Phantom of the Opera and 2006’s 300. ‘The Crown’: Emma Corrin and Josh O’Connor on Embodying the Agony of Charles and Di
Image
“It’s so cringey,” said Emma Corrin, who stars as Princess Diana in Season 4 of Netflix’s “The Crown.” “It’s the worst.”

“It’s so uncomfortable,” agreed Josh O’Connor, who, as Prince Charles, is Corrin’s frequent scene partner. “It’s so horrible. I’m so sorry.”

Here’s the thing about playing the British royal family’s two very famous star-crossed lovers — there are any number of based-on-real-life scenes with Corrin and O’Connor in “The Crown” that they could be talking about. Is it the duo’s terrible engagement interview, where it becomes very apparent that Charles has little interest in his future bride? Is it the press conference in Australia where Diana fumbles incredibly basic questions about their trip Down Under? Is it when Charles watches aghast as attention-starved Diana does a surprise dance to Billy Joel’s “Uptown Girl” in front of a packed audience at the Royal Opera House?...

‘Britain’s Got Talent’ Christmas Special Paused Due to Coronavirus
Image
Production on a “Britain’s Got Talent” Christmas special was paused on Tuesday after at least three crew members tested positive for coronavirus, Variety has confirmed.

“As a result of a positive Covid-19 result received yesterday we have implemented our protocols and a number of crew members are self-isolating at home,” a “Britain’s Got Talent” spokesperson told Variety. “As a result, we are unable to continue filming our ‘Bgt’ Christmas Special today and have taken the decision to postpone. The safety of all those involved in the show is our number one priority and we follow extensive Covid-19-related procedures to adhere to all government guidelines.”

The news was first reported by U.K. tabloid The Sun.

The one-off special, which is produced by Fremantle and Syco Entertainment, was halted before cameras rolled at London’s LH2 studios. The crew were informed not to arrive on set on Monday evening.

Phantom Thread: It’s Time to Give Joel Schumacher’s Phantom Of The Opera Adaptation its Due
Image
Originally, I was holding off on digging into Joel Schumacher’s 2004 adaptation of Phantom of the Opera until later on in this series, but with his passing a few months ago, I thought that it only made sense to make the next installment of my Phantom Thread series a celebration of Schumacher’s lavish and ostentatious adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, showering it with all the adulation that it has always deserved. Many of its critics faulted this version for being too faithful to the cultural phenomenon that is Webber’s crowning achievement in live theatre, but honestly, this wasn’t ever going to be the gothic horror show from Gaston Leroux’s original novel, and I’m not sure why anyone ever expected any differently from this rendition.

In terms of what Joel Schumacher and Andrew Lloyd Webber set out to create with their collaborative efforts on...

No Time to Die Villain Safin Unmasked in New James Bond Video
Rami Malek
“We both kill people to make the world a better place. I just want to be a little tidier.” These are the words spoken by Safin, the latest megalomaniacal baddie who James Bond 007 needs to take down. Yet despite being played by one of the most interesting leading men in recent memory in one Rami Malek, the mysterious Bond villain has largely kept to the shadows in the marketing for No Time to Die—only coming into the light long enough to reveal gnarly scars or an elaborate mask and wig get-up that would work for a Phantom of the Opera movie (especially if it was one directed by Brian de Palma).

But just who exactly is Safin? We get a few new hints in the latest No Time to Die featurette video, which introduces the character in slightly greater detail with some new footage and dialogue. Malek and the Bond movie’s director,...

Alan Menken’s Egot Status Caps Off Winning Career as Composer and Songwriter
Image
On July 26, composer and songwriter Alan Menken officially became an Egot — joining 16 others in achieving the rare distinction of having won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony award — via his Daytime Emmy for outstanding original song in a children’s, young adult, or animated program for “Waiting in the Wings” from Disney’s “Rapunzel’s Tangled Adventure.”

Joining the likes of John Legend, Marvin Hamlish and Robert Lopez in the honor, Menken spoke with Variety on the heels of his historic moment.

So… how does it feel to be an Egot?

I didn’t take it on as a life goal, but I have to admit that since it didn’t happen after a few times, I thought it wasn’t important. When it finally happened and I got the call saying I had finally won, I was surprised at how excited I was. On some deep level, it certainly does mean something to me.

Rufus Wainwright Gets Lost in His Own World on ‘Unfollow the Rules’
Image
Rufus Wainwright has always existed in a world unto himself, the sort of place where Cole Porter, Andrew Lloyd-Webber, and Ian Anderson could all share a sherry and muse on love and literature. It’s an acquired taste for sure, but somehow, he’s always been able to pull off sounding blithe and totally earnest at the same time — two moods that only seem work in a Venn diagram where he’s in the middle.

Unfollow the Rules, Wainwright’s ninth album of original music, is a typically grand and jazzy affair with syrupy,...

Producer Cameron Mackintosh Slams British Government For Offering Theaters No “Practical Support”, Says West End ‘Hamilton’, ‘Phantom Of The Opera’ Won’t Reopen This Year
Image
Blasting the British government for what he says has been “no tangible practical support,” producer Cameron Mackintosh says his company’s West End productions of Hamilton, The Phantom of the Opera, Mary Poppins and Les Miserables won’t reopen until 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.

“This decision is heart-breaking for me,” Mackintosh said in a statement, “as I am sure it is for my employees, as everyone who has worked with me over the last 50 years, on or off the stage, knows how much I care about what I do and how I do it.”

See the complete statement below.

Mackintosh, along with Delfont Mackintosh Theatres, attributed the decision to the Boris Johnson-headed government’s “inability to say when the impossible constraints of social distancing will be lifted.” The producer suggested that the “desperate pleas” from the theater industry have gone unheeded, and that “so far there has been...

Phantom Thread: Time to Get Animated with the 1988 Phantom Of The Opera Cartoon
Image
Greetings, readers! For this installment of my ongoing Phantom Thread series, I’m taking a trip back to the year 1988 for Emerald City Productions’ animated adaptation of Phantom of the Opera, which was definitely capitalizing on the success of Andrew Lloyd Weber’s Broadway musical adaptation that arrived in the States that year (Alw’s musical enjoyed a lengthy preview in London in late 1986). While the animation techniques utilized in this iteration of Phantom are a bit archaic (more on that later), this was still a rather charming experience that definitely captured the spirit of Gaston Leroux’s original story.

Directed by Al Guest and Jean Mathieson, this Phantom of the Opera apparently aired on TV in May 1988, but I honestly don’t have any recollection of it on television at all. My first time watching it was during a music class in junior high after we studied the novel and honestly,...

We Read Dr. Anthony Fauci-Inspired Erotic Fiction So You Don’t Have To

In this unprecedented time in global history, we’re all dealing with the stresses of the pandemic in different ways. Some of us are volunteering. Some of us are baking. The director of the National Institute for Allergy and Infectious Diseases (Niaid), Fauci has served as a plainspoken, sobering presence during Trump’s press briefings, providing a no-bullshit counterbalance to the extended...

Dario Argento in Dario Argentos Dracula (2012)
Daft Punk Are Scoring the Soundtrack for Dario Argento's New Movie Black Glasses
Dario Argento in Dario Argentos Dracula (2012)
In something of a surprise reveal, musical icons Daft Punk will be uniting with the equally iconic legend of genre cinema Dario Argento for his latest movie. Argento is currently preparing to shoot Black Glasses, aka Occhiali Neri, his first feature directorial effort since 2012's Dracula 3D. It has now come to light that Daft Punk will be providing the soundtrack for Argento's long-awaited return.

The reveal was made by Dario Argento personally in a recent interview. While details remain scarce, it's said that the electronic music duo will be sending him the first songs shortly. As Argento tells it, the whole thing came about because Daft Punk are big fans of his work and they reached out to him to see if they could get involved. Here's what Argento had to say about it.

"They are my admirers, they know all my cinema. They heard from French friends that...

Is Jackie Evancho the Kitty on ‘The Masked Singer’: Watch her sing ‘Music of the Night’ on ‘Agt: The Champions’
Jackie Evancho at an event for The Company You Keep - Die Akte Grant (2012)
Jackie Evancho may have lost season 5 of “America’s Got Talent” in 2010 but she has been a big winner when it comes to record sales and concert sellouts. Her first Ep, “O Holy Night” went platinum in the U.S., and she has released six studio albums, all of which have gone to no. 1 on the Billboard classical albums chart. Such success made it even more surprising that she didn’t make the finals of the first season of “Agt: The Champions” in 2019.

However, Evancho could well win season 3 of “The Masked Singer’ if she is, indeed, the Kitty. All the signs point to her being the famous face hidden inside this costume. Take a read of our run-down of just how many ways the hints revealed in the videos as well as her performances in our recap of “The Masked Singer” clues.

‘True Detective’ Creator Nic Pizzolatto Wants Batman to Fight God in His Version of the DC Tentpole
Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022)
These days, everyone seems to want to jump into the Batman extended universe. With Matt Reeves’ “The Batman” coming (hopefully) in 2021, “Joker” rocking the planet last year, and Aronofsky recently spilling the tea on his busted adaptation of the comic book “Batman: Year One,” the Dark Knight is back in the mix. And arguably in the biggest way since Christopher Nolan’s trilogy. But this time, “True Detective” creator and writer Nic Pizzolatto, whose third season of his HBO crime series aired last year, has an idea of his own to throw out.

As shared via Instagram (below), Pizzolatto wants his own chance at taking on Batman. He has an ambitious story in mind, and he does seem to have the Batman mythos down pat. “Batman is the only character in the world I didn’t create that I want a shot at. And he’s the only piece of...

Batman Pitch from True Detective Creator Sounds Like the Best Joker Sequel
Paul Dano, Colin Farrell, Robert Pattinson, and Zoë Kravitz in The Batman (2022)
For the longest time, the Batman franchise has been a magnet for visionary directors to create out-of-the-box superhero movies that win awards and push the boundaries of the genre. The latest addition to the list is Nic Pizzolatto, the creator of the critically acclaimed True Detective series. After declaring that Batman was the only character not of his own creation that he wanted a shot at on his Instagram page, he went on to explain that the Dark Knight was the only piece of geek culture he had any affinity for. The writer also explored various facets of Batman's character, starting with his no-kill rule.

"Batman's no-kill policy is valid and should always remain. But the policy does not exist because 'killing makes me as bad as them' or some kindergarten bullshit. That never held any water at all. Batman's no-kill policy exists Because Batman's Real And Eternal Enemy Is Death.

The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011)
Abbott and Costello Go to The Black Lagoon
The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall (2011)
A CineSavant Article A mention in a book by Tom Weaver of an odd shared visual in two Universal-International movies of the 1950s prompts a quick frame-grab comparison, and also some thoughts about how movies were really made back when twenty dollars was probably considered a big budget expenditure. Some savant I am … I simply didn’t see what was in front of my eyes! A contributor (and friend) had to hold me by the neck to see what a few others have figured out before. Bud and Lou are involved, so who can complain?

Now for some fun, the man said. This one gets filed in the In Box for ‘Odd Mysteries.’ Friend and advisor Craig Reardon has been enduring the world’s forced isolation (cough) by doing what we all do when the going gets tough, watching TV.

Craig found something while doing a feature-by-feature survey of...

DVD Playhouse--March 2012
DVD Playhouse—March 2012

By Allen Gardner

J. Edgar (Warner Bros.) Director Clint Eastwood provides a rock-solid, albeit rather flat portrait of polarizing FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover, covering his life from late teens to his death. Leonardo DiCaprio does an impressive turn as Hoover, never crossing the line into caricature, and creating a Hoover that is all too human, making for an all the more unsettling look at absolute power run amuck. Where the film stumbles is the love story at its core: Hoover’s relationship with longtime aide Clyde Tolson (Armie Hammer). In the hands of an openly-gay director like Gus Van Sant, this could have been a heartbreaking, tender story of forbidden (unrequited?) love, but Eastwood seems to tiptoe around their romance, with far too much delicacy and deference. The film works well when recreating the famous crimes and investigations which Hoover made his name on (the Lindbergh kidnapping,...

Blu-ray Review: Stunning Production of ‘The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall’
Chicago – We’re going to give you a number of HD choices in the next 36 hours for your Valentine’s Day sweetie. Some will be obvious (“Love Story,” “The Lady and the Tramp,” “The Twilight Saga, Breaking Dawn — Part 1”) and others will be less so. One that might fall in the latter category but would make for a lovely Hallmark holiday evening is the stunning Blu-ray release of the 25th anniversary show of “The Phantom of the Opera” at Royal Albert Hall. With incredible production values and amazing performances, this Blu-ray is a perfect gift for fans of the longest-running Broadway show of all time.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

According to some measurements, “The Phantom of the Opera” is the most successful entertainment property in history. It has been running for a quarter-century and will soon cross 10,000 shows on old Broadway. 10,000! Nothing else is even close and it seems unlikely that anything will ever break “Phantom“‘s record.

Blu-ray Review: The Phantom of the Opera at the Royal Albert Hall – An Unforgettable Anniversary
Andrew Lloyd Webber’s The Phantom of the Opera is one of the most loved and memorable musicals of the theatre. In October 2011, the 1986 musical celebrated its 25th anniversary by staging a show at London’s Royal Albert Hall. The anniversary production was filmed so that this once-in-a-lifetime performance could join the rising number of theatre performances coming home to Blu-ray. While the complex set changes and some of the more dramatic theatre effects are marginalized due to the location and filming concerns, the overall production stays in tact. It’s a mesmerizing display of theatre talent, complete with a reunion performance. There are a handful of moments, however, that will make die-hard theatre fans wince – as I did when I saw them use Led screens. I still thoroughly enjoyed the performance what it was, a chance to see Phantom performed once again at a fraction of the cost of seeing it on Broadway.

Gregory Peck, Mary Badham, and Phillip Alford in Wer die Nachtigall stört (1962)
Michael Giltz: DVDs: Donwton Abbey Has Gone Down, Down, Down in Quality
Gregory Peck, Mary Badham, and Phillip Alford in Wer die Nachtigall stört (1962)
Downton Abbey Season Two ($49.99 BluRay; PBS)

Poldark The Complete Collection ($79.99; Acorn) -- Don't tell my mother, but Downton Abbey has swiftly declined from a pale imitation of the original Upstairs Downstairs to a pale imitation of Falcon Crest. She's enjoying the show but I quickly switched from eagerness to see if the second season could build on the over-praised first to laughter at its foolishness to boredom. The first season lifted entire plot lines from U/D (and shamelessly from Mrs. Miniver) but it was fun. This season it has gone completely off the rails, with episodes ending with soap-like revelations (complete with "da-dum!" foreboding musical cues), characters behaving utterly without rhyme or reason from one moment to the next. Why, for example, has Isobel Crawley gone from a sensible if blunt woman to a blithering idiot? The plot twists come so fast and furious all you can do is laugh.
