- A male panda who is still in kung fu training first must deal with his past in order to defeat an evil peacock who wants to rule and take over China. With the help of his allies, the panda must travel a long journey to confront his past to save China.—RECB3
- Long ago, the peacock rulers of Gongmen City invented fireworks for peaceful purposes. The peacocks brought great joy and prosperity to the city. But their son, Lord Shen (Gary Oldman), discovered that the powder could also be turned into a weapon. Troubled by Shen's obsession, his parents consulted a soothsayer, who foretold them that if he continued down this path, he would be defeated by "a warrior of Yin and Yang". Overhearing the prophecy, Shen deduced that the warrior would be a panda and led his wolf army to exterminate the pandas across China to change his fate. But what Shen did only sealed his future. Horrified by the genocide, Shen's parents banished him. Shen swore revenge while leaving the palace and says that when he returns all of China would bow at his feet.
Shen uses his wolf army to build cannons, but they soon run out of metal. Shen orders his army to raid the farthest villages in China to get more metal. A cannon was revolutionary weapon at the time with no equal.
Thirty years later, Po (Jack Black) is living his dream as the Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow Kung Fu masters, the Furious Five, but is told by Master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman) that he has yet to achieve inner peace. Shifu himself has meditated for a long time and only achieved inner peace after he accepted Po as the Dragon Warrior. Once achieved, inner peace allows a master to reshape and redirect matter, without even touching it. Shifu says that some masters meditate for over 50 years without food or water to achieve inner peace.
The Furious Five include Tigress a South China tiger, Mantis (Seth Rogen) a Chinese mantis, Viper (Lucy Liu) a green tree-viper, Crane (David Cross) a red-crowned crane and Monkey (Jackie Chan) a golden snub-nosed monkey.
Shen and his army raid villages for scrap metal to build cannons that Shen will use to conquer China. When Shen's army raids another village, Po and the Five intercept them. While fighting off a pack of wolf bandits, Po is distracted by a symbol on the head wolf's (Danny McBride) armor, which causes Po to have a flashback of his mother. Due to this distraction, the wolves manage to defeat Po and escape with some of the confiscated metal. Tigress cannot understand why Po froze in the middle of the battle, but he simply returns home without saying anything. Po asks his goose father, Mr. Ping (James Hong), where he came from, but all Ping can tell him is that he found Po as an infant in a radish crate and adopted him. There was no note with the baby panda, and nobody ever came looking for it. Ping brought the baby inside, fed him and gave him a bath.
Shen returns to Gongmen city and challenges the current regents Master Rhino, Ox and Croc. Shen drags his cannon with him and uses it to defeat the Kung Fu masters, who are no match for the new technology.
Afterward, Shifu receives word that Master Thundering Rhino (Victor Garber), leader of the Kung Fu council protecting Gongmen City, has been killed by Lord Shen with his newly developed weapon, a cannon, which threatens to destroy Kung Fu tradition. In the process Shen has captured Gongmen City & imprisoned his own parents. Shen imprisons the other regents, Masters Ox and Croc, and takes over the city, but the soothsayer constantly reminds him of the prophecy.
Po and the Five go to stop him. Along the way, Po has nightmares about his parents abandoning him and replacing him with a radish. Po is frustrated and try as he might, he is not able to achieve inner peace. Tigress realizes that Po is dealing with an internal conflict that he is not able to articulate. Shen had put the metal of the city to use in building many more cannons. He plans to attack China in 3 days when the moon is full, and the tide is high. The soothsayer maintains her prophecy and says nothing has changed. Shen challenges her as his army did not leave a single Panda alive.
They reach Gongmen City to find it under the control of Shen's forces. The heroes meet a sheep who guides them to Gongmen jail where they find two imprisoned council members, Masters Storming Ox (Dennis Haysbert) and Croc (Jean-Claude Van Damme), and ask their help to liberate the city. Both masters cite their helplessness against Shen's weapon and refuse to escape. They argue that if they fight, Shen will turn the weapon against the city itself. Master Ox tells Po that it is time to surrender to Shen as Kung Fu is dead. This infuriates Po. Po and the Five are then discovered by the wolf leader, who they chase to prevent him from alerting Shen, only to be captured.
Po and the Five feign surrender to Shen, secretly replacing Mantis with an action figure. Upon being brought before Shen in his tower, Po has to be carried up the last few flights of stairs to Shen's chambers. Reaching there Po attacks the cannon, which turns out to be the miniature prototype. Shen is delirious with happiness and believes that Po is not a worthy opponent.
This is when Po and the Five free themselves (with the help of Mantis) and destroy Shen's cannon. However, Po is again distracted by a flashback upon seeing the same symbol as before on Shen's plumage, allowing Shen to escape and destroy the tower with an arsenal of cannons. During the cannon attack, Crane burns his wing.
After escaping, Tigress (Angelina Jolie) confronts Po over his distraction. Po explains that he remembers Shen's presence on the night he was separated from his parents and wants to question Shen about his past. Though empathetic, Tigress orders him to stay behind for his own safety. The Five abandon him for his safety and proceed to destroy Shen's cannon factory.
Po regardless breaks into Shen's cannon factory to confront Shen, inadvertently foiling the Five's attempts to destroy the factory. Shen claims that Po's parents abandoned him before he blasts Po out of the factory and captures the Five.
Badly wounded but alive, Po floats downriver. Po is rescued by Shen's soothsayer, who has been exiled by Shen to the ruined village where Po was born. Guided by the soothsayer to embrace his past, Po remembers that his parents had endangered themselves to save him from Shen's forces, his mother hiding him in a crate before she was subdued. Furthermore, the Soothsayer reminds Po that despite this tragedy, he had lived a happy and fulfilling life in the Valley of Peace.
Attaining inner peace, Po returns to Gongmen City to save the captive Five from being executed by Shen at the city harbor. Shen is sailing downriver with his army and a fleet of warships. Po frees the Five, and with the help of Masters Ox, Croc, and Shifu, they destroy the foremost ships and prevent the army from reaching the harbor. Shen fires the cannon on his flagship, killing most of his own soldiers to clear the way.
Everyone is injured by the blast except Po, who stands alone against Shen, using his newfound inner peace skills to deflect the cannonballs shot at him back at the fleet. After destroying all the ships and eliminating Shen's army, Po then uses the final cannonball to deflect it back at Shen's flagship, which explodes.
On the wreckage of the flagship, Po offers mercy to Shen, who rejects it and attacks Po with a spear. During the fight, Shen accidentally severs the lines holding up the destroyed cannon, which falls and crushes him.
Victorious, Po returns to the Valley of Peace and reunites with Mr. Ping, declaring him to be his father. At the same time, Po's biological father Li Shan (Fred Tatasciore) is shown to be alive in a hidden village inhabited by surviving pandas, sensing that his son is also alive.
