Albert Finney had an acting legacy including triumphs on stage and television. He was primarily known worldwide for his career, which lasted over half a century, as a film actor, equally adept in lighthearted musicals and complex dramas.

Finney's work has been heralded in all three media. He won London's Olivier Award for "Orphans" on stage, and won an Emmy, Golden Globe and BAFTA Award for his performance as Winston Churchill in TV's "The Gathering Storm." But it was in film that Finney was most honored. In 2000, Finney scored a rare double at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning Best Supporting Actor for his work in Steven Soderbergh's "Erin Brockovich," and even though he had little more than a cameo part in Soderbergh's "Traffic" later that year, the role was big enough for him to win a second SAG Award that night as part of the film's ensemble cast.

Oof. Beginnings of months are difficult in terms of how many titles on any streaming service we are forced to say goodbye to. Each month, Netflix brings in many new items, meaning some older ones have to leave. Some months are worse than others.

May isn't worse than other months unless you are a fan of a couple of franchises. If you love Spider-Man, we have bad news for you. If you are addicted to watching Thomas & Friends, we have more bad news.

Perhaps the worst part is that a lot of comedies are saying goodbye. Wedding Crashers, the Fockers films, and a couple of the Friday flicks are going away. So are some Oscar-worthy films, such as Schindler's List and Whiplash.

Universal Pictures is fast-tracking an untitled original comedy about a country western star in free fall from Judd Apatow and Glen Powell, the studio announced on Thursday. Apatow will direct the film with Powell set to star.

Apatow and Powell are set to write the script together.

Apatow will produce through his longstanding Apatow Productions overall deal with the Studio. Apatow’s relationship with the Studio dates back to his 2005 directorial debut, “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” and he has since directed “Knocked Up,” “Funny People,” “This is 40,” “Trainwreck” and “The King of Staten Island” for the Studio.

Powell and Dan Cohen will produce through Barnstorm’s newly minted first look deal with the Studio. This new collaboration with Apatow is the second project to be produced with Universal since Barnstorm announced their first look deal in February.

Netflix is kicking 2025 off in decidedly low-key fashion. By its standards, the streamer’s lineup of film originals in January is surprisingly slight. There are still a few Netflix-exclusive movies worth recommending this month, though, and the service is making up for its slim pickings of originals with a batch of exciting streaming acquisitions that is practically bursting at the seams with modern classics from the past 30 years.

In other words, there are still plenty of options for anyone out there looking to stream the first month of this new year away. For help choosing which movies to watch, here are TheWrap’s picks for the best new movies on Netflix in January.

CNN reporter Jim Acosta on Tuesday morning said he is leaving the channel after declining to accept a new timeslot. Acosta made the announcement at the end of his 10:00 a.m. “CNN Newsroom” show.

“After giving all of this careful consideration and weighing an alternative timeslot CNN offered me, I’ve decided to move on,” Acosta said.

The longtime reporter — who gained notoriety in recent years for his combative relationship with President Donald Trump — thanked his crew and said he was “grateful” for his 18 years at the network. He said the highlight of his CNN run was not covering Trump, which many people ask him about, but rather when he went to Cuba in 2016 and was able to question Raúl Castro.

“Don’t give in to the lies, don’t give in to the fear,” Acosta said in his final plea to viewers. “Hold onto the truth — and to hope.

With the new year comes new entries into streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and more. From originals to films that Netflix has acquired for distribution to just old films that find a place on the streaming platform, it balances its slate each year. This month there are quite a few films from each category that will make it to Netflix screens.

A couple of classics are set to be available on the streaming platform from January 1. Films like 13 Going on 30, Dallas Buyers Club, Interstellar, Inception, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Erin Brockovich, Notting Hill, the Rush Hour franchise, and the Spider-Man trilogy from Sam Raimi are set to be available on Netflix. There are a few originals in the pipeline too.

In 2008, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Back To You, co-created/executive produced by Steve Levitan, was canceled by Fox, the broadcast network then-aligned with Levitan’s longtime studio home, 20th Television. Shortly thereafter, another comedy co-created/executive produced by Levitan, Modern Family, was sold to a rival network, ABC, where it went to series and became an instant hit.

In 2023, a comedy about the behind-the-scenes of the TV industry, Reboot, created by Levitan, was canceled by Hulu, the streamer aligned with his studio 20th TV. Tom Girardi, once celebrated for his courtroom victories, was found guilty Tuesday of defrauding clients out of millions of dollars. The federal jury in Los Angeles convicted Girardi on four counts of wire fraud after a nearly two-week trial.

Girardi, 85, gained fame representing plaintiffs in major lawsuits against corporations, including a case that inspired the movie Erin Brockovich. He also appeared on the reality TV show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills with his estranged wife, Erika Jayne.

Prosecutors accused Girardi of embezzling funds from vulnerable clients, including accident victims and their families. Testimonies came from individuals such as an Arizona woman whose husband died in a boating incident and survivors of a 2010 gas pipeline explosion near San Francisco.

Liam Hemsworth and Laura Dern will be playing a couple in the upcoming Netflix romance film Lonely Planet and the streamer just debuted the first look photos!

The movie was written and directed by Susannah Grant, who is best known for writing such movies as Ever After, Erin Brockovich, 28 Days, In Her Shoes, and Catch and Release. She must recently was the showrunner behind the Netflix limited series Unbelievable.

In Lonely Planet, a reclusive novelist arrives at a prestigious writer’s retreat in Morocco, hoping the remote setting will unlock her writer’s block. While there, she meets a young man — what starts as an acquaintanceship evolves into an intoxicating, life-altering love affair.

Also starring in the movie are Diana Silvers, Younès Boucif, Adriano Giannini, and Rachida Brakni. The film will be released globally on Netflix on October 11.

The lonely planet seemingly won't be so lonely after all this fall on Netflix. Academy Award winner Laura Dern stars opposite The Witcher's upcoming new leading man Liam Hemsworth in the new Netflix original romance movie Lonely Planet. Netflix announced the highly anticipated new movie's fall release date on Aug. 27 and released a trio of first look photos.

Lonely Planet will make its Netflix premiere on Friday, Oct. 11, when it begins streaming at midnight Pt. The movie was first announced in April 2022 and written and directed by Susannah Grant, who has written such fan-favorite movies as Ever After, Erin Brockovich, In Her Shoes, and Catch and Release, which she also directed. Grant also previously worked with Netflix on the hit 2019 limited series Unbelievable.

A Los Angeles jury today convicted Tom Girardi, whose work inspired the Julia Roberts film Erin Brockovich, of running a massive 10-year Ponzi scheme in which he siphoned at least $15 million in settlement funds from four of his legal clients.

The 85-year-old estranged husband of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Erika Jayne was found guilty of all four wire fraud charges and faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years on each count. Read the Justice Department’s release about the case below.

The jury began deliberating Monday afternoon following closing arguments and met for about two hours Tuesday morning before announcing that a verdict had been reached. Girardi, who has dementia, showed no visible reaction as the verdicts were read. In January, he was declared competent to stand trial.

The scams, which ran from 2010-20, were the subject of the 2021 Hulu documentary The Housewife and the Hustler.

Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie and Academy Award winner Laura Dern have signed on to star in “Monsanto,” the latest film from writer-director John Lee Hancock.

The film follows the true story of young, untried attorney Brent Wisner (Powell), who in 2019 took on a seemingly insurmountable case against the giant U.S. chemical company Monsanto on behalf of Dewayne “Lee” Johnson (Mackie) who used the company’s best-known product Roundup, a wildly financially successful weed and grass pesticide killer, as part of his job as a high school groundskeeper. Dern plays Dr. Melinda Rogers, the Monsanto Company’s chief toxicologist, who testifies with certainty that Roundup is safe during the landmark cancer trial.

Known for breaking character and cracking up Saturday Night Live cast members in his previous two hosting stints on the NBC sketch program, Ryan Gosling stayed true to himself tonight, laughing in every skit he was in, much to the delight of the studio audience, and challenging his co-stars to keep a straight face — even seasoned veterans like Kenan Thompson.

The tone was set in the cold open, reuniting Gosling and Kate McKinnon for a third Close Encounters sketch, in which host Gosling could not stop laughing as McKinnon was demonstrating how aliens observed Gosling character’s private parts close and personal during their alleged abduction. The TV roster features several high-profile scripted series, which are set to release new seasons this year (no specific dates yet): The Night Agent (Season 2), the sixth and final season of Cobra Kai, Emily in Paris (Season 4), Outer Banks (Season 4), and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second installment of Ryan Murphy‘s true-crime anthology series.

Over the weekend, Christopher Nolan‘s acclaimed film “Oppenheimer” became the highest-grossing biopic domestically since the 2018 Freddie Mercury/Queen musical movie “Bohemian Rhapsody,” and it’s faring even better when it comes to the global box office.

In its third weekend, “Oppenheimer” — which stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer, the man responsible for creating the atomic bomb — made $28.7 million in North America, bringing its domestic total to $228.6 million. That pushes it past the $216.3 million made domestically by “Bohemian Rhapsody” during its entire theatrical run.

“Oppenheimer” actually received far better reviews than “Bohemian Rhapsody,” which earned fairly mixed notices, partially due to the issues surrounding director Bryan Singer, who left mid-project. But “Bohemian Rhapsody” had the last laugh at the Oscars, where it won four trophies: Best Actor (Rami Malek), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Editing and Best Sound Mixing.

Based on Eric Weiner’s New York Times bestselling book, “The Geography of Bliss: One Grump’s Search for the Happiest Places in the World,” Wilson explores some of the happiest and unhappiest places on earth — from Iceland to Bulgaria to Ghana — in a profound and funny way that unpacks the science of happiness. All five episodes of the series will be available during Mental Health Awareness Month, beginning on May 18.

George Clooney confirmed “some very famous people,” including Mark Wahlberg and Johnny Depp, turned down the chance to star in the 2001 hit “Ocean’s Eleven”.

Clooney was joined by the likes of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Don Cheadle and Julia Roberts in the star-studded flick. However, during an interview at the 2023 TCM Film Festival, Clooney admitted some said “no” to the film.

The actor insisted a lot of people wanted to work with director Steven Soderbergh at the time.

He recalled, “Steven had just done ‘Erin Brockovich’ and ‘Traffic’, and he was nominated for [an Oscar for] directing both films.

“So, people really wanted to work with Steven.”

George Clooney and Steven Soderbergh were guests at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood last weekend for a showing of their 2001 production “Ocean’s Eleven.”

During the Ben Mankiewicz-hosted chat, Clooney and Soderbergh explained where they were in their careers when they first linked up and prepped to make 1998’s “Out of Sight.” Clooney was coming off of “Batman & Robin,” a project he frequently talks about as a humbling experience with rubber nipples attached. Soderbergh had a flop with “The Underneath”. After things turned around and Soderbergh delivered “Erin Brockovich,” which won an Oscar for Julia Roberts as Best Actress plus four other nominations, and “Traffic,” which won an Oscar for himself as Best Director, plus Best Supporting Actor for Benicio Del Toro, Best Adapted Screenplay for Stephen Gaghan, and Best Editing, the planets aligned for the smart, sexy, and snappy “Ocean’s Eleven.”
