“I Had a Big Hand in That”: Joe Manganiello on How He Helped Bring ‘Dungeons & Dragons’ Out of the Shadows [Exclusive]
Image
Joe Manganiello is primarily known for his work across film and television, whether it's for his five-season-long role in True Blood or, more recently, as the host of the reality competition Deal or No Deal Island, which puts a Survivor spin on the old Howie Mandel format. He's also been doing some serious preparation to take a villainous turn as Crocodile in the second season of Netflix's live-action One Piece. However, arguably his biggest impact on entertainment can be attributed to Dungeons & Dragons. As a host, official ambassador, writer, game designer, and more, he's helped pull the tabletop role-playing game into the limelight and get celebrities and the public at large to start publicly discussing it. Now, he's reflecting on just how much his efforts have paid off in getting the game he loves to where it is today.

Star Wars finds new Baylan Skoll, but where have we seen him before?
Image
Baylan Skoll is the sympathetic Sith in Disney+'s Ahsoka series brought to life by the late Ray Stevenson. A former ally turned mercenary by the Dark Side, Baylan wields a lightsaber with deadly precision as he aids the witch Elsbeth in unlocking ancient secrets in the show's first season.

Unfortunately, the untimely death of actor Ray Stevenson has left the character's fate up in the air for some time now. However, a first look at his successor was just revealed at Lucasfilm's Star Wars celebration in Japan. In Ahsoka's second season, Rory McCann will be our new Baylan Skoll.

Who is Rory McCann? Arya Stark (Maisie Williams) and The Hound (Rory McCann) in Game of Thrones season 8.

While he might be new to the galaxy far, far away, fans of George R. R. Martin's Game of Thrones series know him as Sandor Clegane or simply The Hound.

Why is The Wheel of Time necessary fantasy reading?
Image
For those of us who love the fantasy and science-fiction genres, we are lucky to live in an era of abundance. Genre television has really taken off, leading to shows like Game of Thrones, House of the Dragon, The Rings of Power, The Wheel of Time, and The Legend of Vox Machina. Books, e-books, audiobooks, and podcasts abound, and there are more people reading and writing for these genres than ever before. Without throwing any shade at the early years of genre storytelling, it’s good to see that The Hobbit and Frankenstein aren’t the only options on bookshelves anymore.

With so much content and so many options, one might ask: what is necessary reading in the fantasy genre? Which novels fundamentally set the standard for what the genre is and should look like while bringing their readers joy, entertainment, sorrow, solace, wonder, and all of the other emotions...

From The Page to The Screen, Netflix Attempts to Adapt Curtis Jobling’s Books With ‘Wolf King’ Using The Beautiful Art of Animation To Explore Self-Discovery
Image
Based on the ‘Wereworld’ novels by Curtis Jobling, ‘Wolf King’ attempts to explore the intricacies of humanity with a werewolf tale: Within the shadowed twilight of history, we have witnessed the continuous transfiguration of the Werewolf tale, with the latest manifestation being when Leigh Whannell’s ‘Wolf Man’ was released back in January of this year. The Werewolf lore has had a long legacy that has endured to the ever-shifting mythos, bending and warping through the ages, until we are left with the creature as we know it today. One of set interpretations unfolded within Curtis Jobling’s ‘Wereworld’ manuscript saga, which spanned until 2013 when the 6th and last book ‘War of the Werelords’ saw the light of day in October, whereupon they succeeded in cultivating a small yet fiercely loyal following, and despite the flames of its success not igniting in the realms of widespread acclaim, it carved a...

The 20 Best Fantasy TV Shows Since 2020, Ranked
Image
Fantasy is one of the most creative genres in fiction. From the supernatural to the post-apocalyptic, fantasy covers many subgenres that explore stories outside the bounds of reality. However, it has evolved significantly over the years, and while there are common genre tropes, plenty of new fantasy series break the mod.

Although fantasy was once most at home in the cinema, streaming television has breathed new life into the genre. Special effects technology has finally become practical enough that creators can bring to life entirely new worlds on the small screen, even on a TV budget. Since 2020, shows like The Legend of Vox Machina, House of the Dragon, and One Piece have brought fantasy to new heights and refined the genre for modern television audiences.

Updated on March 16, 2025, by Robbie Robinson: Few things hit like a well-made fantasy series. Halfway through the 20s, popular streaming services have managed to...

‘Weird Kids’: Critical Role’s Ashley Johnson, Taliesin Jaffe Recount Their Bizarre Lives as Child Actors in New Show
Image
Years before they were part of the Critical Role D&d role-playing crew, Ashley Johnson and Taliesin Jaffe were child actors — and they’re talking all about their experiences growing up in Hollywood in Cr’s upcoming show “Weird Kids.”

“Weird Kids,” presented as a podcast-style conversation between Johnson and Jaffe, is “part hilarious confession, part heartfelt reflection and all-around love letter to anyone who has ever felt like an outsider,” Critical Role says.

The full 24-episode run of “Weird Kids” will be available exclusively through Critical Role’s membership service, Beacon ($5.99/month). The show will premiere on March 20, with a live “Weird Kids Launch Party” streamed on Beacon, YouTube and Twitch leading into the episode premiere. The first episode then will be available on-demand on March 25 on YouTube, Beacon and podcast platforms; subsequent episodes will be released on Beacon every Tuesday at 5 a.m. Pacific.

“It did not need a remake”: David Tennant’s American ‘Broadchurch’ Remake Proved He Was Never the Right Man for the Job
Image
David Tennant is a good choice for most of the roles that he is chosen for, be it the malicious dragon knight in Critical Role’s The Legend of Vox Machina, The Doctor, or a muted detective in the British version of Broadchurch. However, the American remake of the show sort of made things worse by keeping Tennant as the lead, just expecting him to change his accent.

David Tennant in Doctor Who || Credit: BBC

While American remakes of British shows (like House of Cards) have often been successful, there have been a lot of times when the American remake just hasn’t been able to live up to its counterpart across the Atlantic. This was the case with David Tennant reprising his role in the remake as Di Alec Hardy, named Detective Emmet Carver in Gracepoint, which was something that failed to resonate with fans horribly.

Fans agree that...

Promo One Sheet
It really is our time! It really is our year!

Dropout’s Dungeons and Dragons actual play series, Dimension 20, premiered in 2018 with the first season of Fantasy High. Since that first campaign, Fantasy High has had two sequel seasons, a series of spinoffs, and the most unsettling yet adorable plushie of a balding elf with an affinity for yogurt. The series has become a cultural phenomenon both in the established world of D&d and with teens who like fantasy and are looking for a bit of a giggle. Now it has been revealed that Webtoon is adapting the actual play series into its own comic run, and that announcement has been met with nothing but excitement and delight.

According to that announcement, this comic is set to release 61 episodes, making audiences believe it will depict the events of freshman year, or season 1 of the series. Personally, I hope...

A 43-Year-Old Dungeons & Dragons Module Has The Perfect Setup For A Horror Adaptation
Image
Dungeons & Dragons has a horror TV show adaptation on its hands if it looks to one 43-year-old story. Originating as a tabletop game in the 1970s, the Dungeons & Dragons franchise has inspired TV shows, movies, video games, and more. The huge fantasy world created by the game is inspiring to many and TV is always looking for its next Game of Thrones or big, water-cooler fantasy show. An Honor Among Thieves sequel may be on the rocks, but a D&d horror TV adaptation sounds possible, especially if it tackles one classic adventure module.

Paramount was previously considering a Dungeons & Dragons TV show, but this was scrapped, and now, the concept is being shopped around. The success of The Legend of Vox Machina suggests the viability of D&d TV, so a streaming giant may well pick this up. They may focus on R.A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt books,...

A TV Show Based On This Gritty Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Would Be A Great Game Of Thrones Replacement
Image
Dungeons & Dragons would have the perfect Game of Thrones replacement if it adapted one fan-favorite campaign. Some signs indicate that another Dungeons & Dragons TV series may not be coming for a while. The D&d TV show being considered with Paramount was canceled. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves earned rave reviews, but its slow-moving box office performance means an Honor Among Thieves sequel is on the rocks. However, TV has been trying to recreate Game of Thrones' success since it ended, and Dungeons & Dragons may have the answer.

Even despite setbacks like the Paramount show getting scrapped and Joe Manganiello's Dragonlance movie idea being rejected, D&d still does seem to be having a moment. The Legend of Vox Machina is dominating on Amazon Prime Video with 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, proving the world's readiness for Dungeons & Dragons TV. R.A. Salvatore's The Legend of Drizzt books are overdue an adaptation,...

This 9-Year-Old Dungeons & Dragons Campaign Would Make A Perfect TV Show For 2 Obvious Reasons
Image
With the appetite for more Dungeons & Dragons content beyond the original game, one D&D campaign from almost a decade ago has the perfect structure to adapt as a TV show. Once relegated to the niche realm of hardcore tabletop gamers and nerds, Dungeons & Dragons has experienced a surge in growth in the past decade. Since then, Dungeons & Dragons has become Stranger Things' primary inspiration, gotten its own tabletop livestreams like Critical Role, which spawned its own series, The Legend of Vox Machina, and a movie adaptation, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.

One of the struggles of adapting Dungeons & Dragons for a TV show or movie is the general lack of a cohesive narrative. Like video games, players themselves build the story as they go along, so by its very nature, most Dungeons & Dragons campaigns don't have much beyond a few key plot points to build the framework.

10 Fantasy TV Shows With The Perfect Villain
Image
This article contains references to gratuitous violence and sexual assault.

Fantasy TV has been having a great decade, with a shocking number of amazing shows coming out in the 2020s, and some of them serving up the perfect villain. Villainy suits the fantasy genre particularly well. From the best historical fantasy TV to the dark fantasy and the satirical, this genre understands that there is something innately cartoonish about an evil demon lord taking over the world, which is often the underlying premise of a fantasy villain. World domination seems to be at the top of many villains' agendas, whether they are a Demon lord or not.

The best fantasy villain of all time, in any format, is probably the eponymous Sauron of The Lord of the Rings, but his influence has echoed down through books and movies since 1954. Some of the most powerful fantasy characters are otherworldly villains with supernatural powers,...

The Legend of Vox Machina has been one of Amazon Prime's most successful fantasy TV shows since its premiere in 2022, becoming a crossover hit with audiences outside the Dungeons and Dragons fandom. It's no surprise, considering how immersive the world is and how incredible the characters are. However, due to its high quality, the seasons can't be pumped out too quickly, so viewers will be waiting a little while before it hits screens. In the meantime, Netflix's lesser-known fantasy hit, Castlevania, should be the next show on the lists of Vox Machina fans.

The Legend of Vox Machina season 4 has no confirmed release date, but judging by the series' success, it will be far from the last installment of the show. Castlevania is a vampire drama that aired on Netflix from 2017 to 2021 and featured some notable actors among the voice cast. Based on a video game series, Castlevania shares...

The following contains spoilers for Secret Level Episode 1, "Dungeons & Dragons: The Queen's Castle," which debuted Dec. 10 on Prime Video.

Without a doubt, Dungeons & Dragons is considered to be one of the most famous fantasy tabletop role-playing game (Ttrpg) ever. It has spawned movies such as Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, and it led to video games like the Baldur's Gate franchise.

Now, Prime Video is diving into the lore with a story of its own. Tim Miller (who directed the first Deadpool movie) debuts the anthology series: Secret Level. The first chapter is influenced by D&d, which unravels a lot of action, drama and conflict, with some of the most gorgeous CGI animation around. A Dungeons & Dragons Show's Most Obvious Story Choice Faces An Unavoidable Challenge
Image
Dungeons & Dragons is one of the most beloved role-playing games in history, making it surprising there haven't been more successful movie and TV adaptations of the complex and compelling campaigns. Recently, the explosive popularity and critical acclaim of The Legend of Vox Machina have shown that there's an audience out there for additional projects. This could help pave the way for the potential live-action TV series based on D&d, but there will still be plenty of problems to grapple with. Namely, the show will have to pick the right story that stands out and engages fans, new and old.

As of now, the live-action D&d TV adaptation doesn't have a home. Paramount missed a Dungeons & Dragons opportunity by choosing not to pick up the series. Due to this, the live-action TV show will be shopped around to other potential studios. However, one universe within the D&d world,...

Every Legend Of Vox Machina Team Member Ranked By Likability
Image
Everyone in Vox Machina is likable, which is why Prime Video's The Legend of Vox Machina works so well, but some members of the team are timelessly lovable. The Critical Role adaptation follows what may be one of the internet's most popular Dungeons & Dragons play web series. The adventuring party in Critical Role translates effortlessly to Vox Machina in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3, with each member of the team having grown into their respective roles. This mercenary band is composed of Scanlan Shortholt, Pike Trickfoot, Grog Strongjaw, Percy de Rolo, Keyleth, Vex'ahlia Vessar, and Vax'ildan Vessar.

The 2022 adult animated show joined other fantasy shows like The Wheel of Time and The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power on Amazon. The D&d series can easily hold its own against these live-action releases, proving the potential of D&d on TV and how suited it is to animation.

1 Minor The Avengers Character Actually Had a Bigger Role in the Movie's Deleted Scenes
Image
Quick Links Beth Formed a Bond With Captain America Beth Offered Insight Into the Battle of New York Ashley Johnson's Time in the MCU Was Short-Lived

The Avengers was an important film to get right. Released in 2012, it was the culmination of the Marvel Cinematic Universe's first phase, and it was navigating largely uncharted waters. There had been films about superhero teams before, such as X-Men in 2000 and Fantastic Four in 2005, but The Avengers was the first time that superheroes from multiple standalone movies came together for a major crossover. If The Avengers had failed, the entire MCU would have failed with it, and the landscape of the film industry would look very different today. Because The Avengers needed to balance so many characters, it is only natural that some plot lines were removed during the editing process, but that unfortunately led to one character being almost entirely...

Critical Role's long-standing video game ambitions could be nearing fruition very soon. It Truly Deserves a Sequel: After Wonder Woman 1984 Disaster, Chris Pine Starred in a Beautiful $208M Film That Bombed Due to Poor Marketing

Chris Pine might have been the only Hollywood Chris to have entered the Dceu instead of the MCU, but it seems that there could have been a different film of his that should have received a sequel, as opposed to Wonder Woman.

While Patty Jenkins managed to give Wonder Woman the film she deserved with the first film, Wonder Woman 1984 managed to go down the same road that the rest of the Dceu did, throwing away everything that worked for its character, while also managing to make some of the most spectacular set pieces feel hollow. Instead, a lot of fans hope that it was Pines’ Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves that should have received a sequel instead.

After 50 years creeping from the margins of popular culture into the mainstream, Dungeons & Dragons is now bigger than ever. 1 Moment In The Legend Of Vox Machina Season 3 Finale Is Still Making Me Mad
Image
It's been a month, and there's still one moment in The Legend of Vox Machina season 3 finale that makes me angry whenever I think about it. This season was a wild test for the group, with the Legend of Vox Machina season 3 ending seeing the team defeating not one, but four separate villains: Thordak, Raishan, Ripley, and Orthax. That's two Chroma Conclave dragons, an evil mad scientist, and a shadow demon not too bad for a group that was so discordant in the beginning that they couldn't even win a drunken bar fight. On top of that, there were big losses, and a few romances cemented among The Legend of Vox Machina's characters; season 3 certainly packed a lot into its 12 episodes.

Vox Machina really grew in individual ways in the critically-acclaimed Legend of Vox Machina season 3, and together, and their bonds grew deeper and more resolute. While they were tested all season,...

Jurassic World's Deadliest New Dinosaur Has Yet to Appear in the Movies
Image
Quick Links What Is Jurassic World: Chaos Theory's Leucistic Baryonyx? Could The Leucistic Baryonyx Return In Jurassic World Movies?

In the Jurassic Park and Jurassic World movies, there were many terrifying dinosaurs. Some have been cloned from mosquito DNA to create carbon copies, such as the T-Rex, the Mosasaurus, and many more. Others have been genetically modified into hybrids, such as the Indominus Rex.

Despite these different breeds, they are all pretty much the same in that they operate in one primal way: they rely on natural instincts. This makes these dinosaurs more ferocious, but they are "normal" in the sense that they don't have any major x-factors. That has changed in Jurassic World: Chaos Theory Season 2, which creates the scariest dinosaur yet: the Leucistic Baryonyx.

The Strongest Vox Machina Weapons, Ranked
Image
The Legend of Vox Machina is the epitome of what it means to be part of a Dungeons & Dragons game. It is rife with monsters, epic battles, emotional highs and lows, and plenty of laugh-out-loud moments as the party members interact with each other. One other aspect of the tabletop RPG that the show has gotten right is its use of magical items to bolster the party. As powerful as they can be on their own, the creatures that Vox Machina faces on a daily basis have only gotten more dangerous, so they have had to improve their arsenal to stand a fighting chance.

This has taken the form of the Vestiges of Divergence or other items they have come across that improve their fighting abilities. Examining them, though, it can be hard to determine which among them are the best magical items the team possesses. Some have versatility going for them,...

This Legend Of Drizzt Character Could Give D&d The Queer TV Icon It Needs
Image
Dungeons & Dragons has a huge Lgbtqi+ community, but it could reach a far wider segment of this audience with one character that is a queer icon waiting to happen. This character started life in The Legend of Drizzt books by American writer R.A. Salvatore. Although Dungeons & Dragons is most famous as a tabletop game from the '70s, it expanded into books, movies, TV series, video games, and more. And yet, the huge potential of this franchise lies significantly untapped. Adapting the Drizzt books, and this character, is a great next step for D&d.

The Legend of Drizzt books started with 1988's The Crystal Shard, the first of The Icewind Dale Trilogy. It introduced drow Drizzt Do'Urden, although he wasn't the focus of the trilogy. Realizing his popularity, Salvatore made Drizzt the main character of a prequel series called The Dark Elf Trilogy, which introduced a renegade drow named Jarlaxle.

The Legend of Vox Machina Season 3 Cast & Character Guide
Image
This guide contains spoilers for Season 3 of The Legend of Vox Machina, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video.

Based on the successful web series Critical Role, The Legend of Vox Machina follows a ragtag band of adventurers from Tal'Dorei in the fictional world of Exandria as they become this universe's only saviors, despite being far from noble warriors. Scanlan, Pike, Grog, Keyleth, Percy, Vax, and Vex are often selfish, hedonistic, and dishonest, which makes them relatable and hilarious. However, they're also incredibly heroic.

After two seasons, The Legend of Vox Machina has earned the love of both Critical Role fans and casual viewers, but the fandom wants more, and thankfully, Season 3 arrived on Prime Video on October 4th, 2024. Anyone who wants to jump on the Vox Machina wagon is right on time -- they only need to get to know the seven members of the band and a couple extras.

This Dungeons & Dragons Hero-Villain Duo Could Be The Next Batman & Joker If A Live-Action TV Show Happens
Image
There has long been talk of a Dungeons & Dragons live-action TV show, but one hero-villain duo tips the scales in its favor, offering fantasy its next Batman and Joker. Paramount dropped their D&d TV show in the wake of the box office disappointment of Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, but the concept is being shopped around. As such a wide franchise, Dungeons & Dragons has corners that not even all D&D fans know about, ranging from a tabletop game and video game to movies and books. But Dark Elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his arch-nemesis need little introduction.

Drizzt Do'Urden originated in R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale book trilogy in 1988 but has gone on to feature in 39 books that have a semi-cult following. He also features in the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance video game, and is a playable character in the popular Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition game.
