For standard broadcast fare, it's impressive how innovative NBC has been with not just outside of the box hits but shows about communities you might not often see over the last decade.
One of the channels being known for the hallmarks of American television introduced us to shows like Outsourced (set in India), Sunnyside (a community of immigrants in New York), Perfect Harmony (the South), Superstore (the working-class American Midwest).
It's perhaps in this tradition that NBC is branching out into far-off settings by adding a show about a Syrian refugee who faces marginalization despite his brilliance as a doctor on Transplant Season 1 Episode 1.
This highly relevant tale of a modern-day medical Maguyver of sorts starts off with an emotional wallop of a first episode. The only problem is where the show goes from here.
The show starts out with about three minutes of set-up as we see our protagonist,...

Netflix has released the first trailer for Julie and the Phantoms. This new musical series comes from Kenny Ortega, best known as the man behind the High School Musical franchise. In this case, he is heading back to his song and dance roots, this time with a little bit of a genre spin. The show is "about embracing life's ups and downs, following your dreams, and discovering the power of your own voice." But it also involves ghosts.
The trailer opens up with our title character getting ready to give a performance, though she is clearly a bit hesitant to do so. We quickly come to find she has suffered a great personal loss with her mom passing away. Things get supernatural in a hurry as several ghosts pay Julie a visit. Ultimately, they end up helping Julie through her musical journey. It very much has the vibe of a Disney Channel musical,...

“You only live once but you can rock forever,” promises the tagline in the first trailer for Netflix’s Ya musical series Julie and the Phantoms. To which we say…rad.
Julie and the Phantoms is a nine-episode series set to arrive to Netflix on September 10. It follows high schooler Julie (Madison Reyes) struggling to regain her passion for music after the loss of her mother. Thankfully, some rockin’ ghosts from the distant past (1995) will soon arrive to help out. Check out the first full trailer below.
“Why have you been keeping those cute boys a secret?” one character asks. Why indeed, Netflix? This looks to be a charming Ya adventure, which makes sense as it comes from Kenny Ortega – the director and choreographer behind High School Musical. Netflix official description for the series reads:
“High schooler Julie (Madison Reyes) lost her passion for music after her mom died last year.

The first trailer for All Together Now has arrived online. This is the latest Netflix original movie heading our way this summer. In this case, we have Moana star Auli'i Cravalho leading the cast of director Brett Haley's latest. The streaming service promises this "is a story of finding hope in the darkest of times." Based on the trailer, that seems true, and it looks like this is going to be a bit of a tearjerker as well.
The trailer kicks off with us getting to know our lead character Amber a bit. She's musically inclined and has big dreams. She seems like a normal enough high school kid, taking part in theater and enjoying time with her friends. But we then come to find she has a not-so-normal existence outside of school, as her family has come under difficult times. But a big opportunity is presented to Amber,...

The Netflix feature "All Together Now" is based on Matthew Quick's novel "Sorta Like a Rock Star", directed by Brett Haley, starring Auli’i Cravalho, Rhenzy Feliz, Judy Reyes, Taylor Richardson, C.S. Lee, Anthony Jacques Jr., and Gerald Isaac Waters, streaming August 28. 2020 on Netflix:
"...'Amber Appleton' (Cravalho) remains an optimist even when her personal life is far less stable than it appears on the surface. A musically gifted high school student with aspirations to attend 'Carnegie Mellon', Amber balances her beloved high school drama club helmed by 'Mr. Franks' (Fred Armisen) with working long hours at a donut shop to help support herself and her down-on-her-luck single mom (Justina Machado).
"She also spends time at the local retirement community, giving care and attention to her favorite pessimistic resident (Carol Burnett). When new obstacles present themselves that threaten her dreams, Amber must learn to lean on the strength of her chosen family to move forward.

Another day, another Netflix Ya teen film announced. Clearly the algorithms indicate that this genre does extremely well for the streaming service because they keep greenlighting them hand over fist. What makes this new one slightly more interesting, “All Together Now,” is that it stars Auli’i Cravalho, the star of Disney’s “Moana.” Obviously, Cravalho, an unknown Hawaiian native at the time, played the character in animation, but she also sang many of the now-iconic songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina, and Opetaia Foa’i, and as the Oscars that year proved: her voice is fierce and no fucking joke.

As previously reported, the Karate Kid sequel series is moving to Netflix for its all-new third season, which will launch on a to-be-determined date.

Chad Gervich is writing the project based on personal experience, with Perfect Harmony creator/executive producer Lesley Wake Webster supervising.
The two will executive produce with Kapital’s Aaron Kaplan and Dana Honor.

The recent demise of Katy Keene brought a delayed close to the gruesome and incendiary annual TV tradition known as the cancellation blitzkrieg.
This nerve-wracking period — which traditionally peaks on the second Friday of May ahead of the broadcast network’s upfront presentations — had been elongated this year as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead of the majority of bubble series learning their fate during a frenetic 24-hour stretch, renewal decisions arrived in fits and starts spread out over the past two months, as the major nets cautiously assessed their needs amid the fluid Covid-19 crisis.

NBC has opted not to renew family drama Council of Dads, sources confirm to Deadline. The decision comes two episodes before the end of the drama’s Season 1 run. Co-star J. August Richards revealed the cancellation in an Instagram post, noting that “tonight is my favorite episode of the season!!!” (You can read his message to fans below)
Council of Dads premiered on March 24 following the season finale of This Is Us. It was the second consecutive drama series in the mold of This Is Us launched by NBC that did not go beyond one season, following last season’s The Village. Council of Dads ranks as one of NBC’s lowest rated drama series of the season. It joins fellow freshman NBC series Bluff City Law, Lincoln Rhyme, Perfect Harmony, Indebted and Sunnyside which all have been canceled. The one NBC first-year scripted show to make it to Season 2 is Zoey’s Extraordinary Playlist.

With production slowly but surely getting underway on TV shows that were shuttered due to the coronavirus pandemic, NBC has announced its fall schedule.
Unlike Fox and The CW, the network is planning on bringing back much of its original programming later this year, with one new drama joining the fall lineup.
Law & Order: Organized Crime is the Svu spinoff starring Christopher Meloni, and it will be paired with its parent series on Thursday nights.
This will allow the two shows to have natural crossovers in a similar way to the #OneChicago franchise on Wednesday nights.
Chicago Fire, Med, and P.D. will be staying put on Wednesdays, which makes sense.
All three have posted solid ratings, so NBC does not need to do anything with them.
Mondays will see Manifest return in the fall after being banished to midseason for the 2019-20 TV season. This is great news for...

NBC on Monday announced whether there is a future for some of its bubble series on the network.
As expected, the network ordered up a third season of Manifest.
Manifest Season 2 averaged a 1.5 rating in adults 18-49 and 7.7 million viewers overall in live plus seven day Nielsens, with the show's Jan. 6 season premiere growing to a 3.7 in 18-49 and 13.4 million viewers with digital and linear delayed viewing recorded to date.
Manifest improved the Monday 10 p.m. hour by 88% in 18-49 rating versus NBC's regular-program season average in the timeslot prior to Manifest's debut.
After a turbulent but routine flight, the crew and passengers of Flight 828 disembarked to find the world had aged five-and-a-half years and their friends, families and colleagues had given up hope of ever seeing them again.
Now, faced with the impossible, the passengers' dreams of a second chance at life evaporate as they encounter the imminent danger surrounding them,...
