Chloe King is looking forward to spending her sixteenth birthday with her two best friends but as the day approaches she begins to discover that she is developing extraordinary abilities. When the trio sneak into a club and Chloe grabs a kiss from a club boy little does she expect that soon he'll be dead and that she'll be hunted by an organization bent on the elimination of her race, or that she'll have allies that she never suspected.

Not knowing her kiss meant death, Chloe still feels guilt over Xavier's death. Ignoring Alex's warnings to be more careful, she tries to redeem herself by helping Gabriel,Xavier's brother, free himself from drug dealers.

Chloe meets Valentina, the leader of the Mai in San Francisco, and has questions answered. But she just wants a normal life again. Then the Order's assassin convinces her everyone she cares about is at risk, unless she agrees to meet alone.

Chloe learns to control her power of super hearing. But not before it causes strains in her relationship with Amy. Her gift of empathy leads her into trouble when Lana, her boss, is stalked by her ex. . She finally takes her training more seriously and Valentina warns Whitley Rezza.

As if being responsible for the San Francisco Mai wasn't enough pressure, Chloe meets Nikki and Lilah, who are both members of the South American Mai. The two girls invite Chloe out for a night of dancing, which she accepts, but Jasmine is suspicious of their motives. As their visit continues, Chloe becomes increasingly frustrated with the way Nikki and Lilah view human life, potentially creating a divide between the different Mai prides.

Chloe's excitement at attending the Rezza Capital art gala with Brian is offset by an overwhelming sense of danger. It isn't until she receives a call that Amy is in trouble that she runs from Brian yet again - but not before he reveals something that could change their relationship forever. Will Brian's secret allow Chloe to finally open up, or will it force her to leave him behind for good?

Compassionate to the needs of others, Chloe is unable to turn her back on Kai, a young man who asks Chloe for help in reuniting with his family. Although she eventually learns that Kai is a huge threat to the Mai's safety, Chloe insists on helping him return home. Accompanied by Alek, Jasmine, Paul and Amy, a determined Chloe begins the dangerous journey into Jackal territory. Alek and Jasmine's worst fears are realized when Chloe's mission takes a terrible turn and one Mai could be lost forever. Meanwhile, even though it has been ten years since Chloe's father vanished, Meredith still feels guilty about dating Frank. In an attempt to move on with their lives, Meredith asks Chloe if she is ok with declaring her father dead, unaware that the two have been in contact.

Tension in the King household is at an all-time high due to Meredith's increasing frustration with Chloe's penchant for secrecy. Aware that her relationship with her mother is suffering, Chloe must decide whether she will finally confess her biggest secret to the most important person in her life.

Meredith invites her new boyfriend, Frank, and his teenage daughter, Vanessa, over for dinner in hopes that the four of them can get to know each other better. Although Vanessa initially wants nothing to do with the Kings, she eventually confides in Chloe about her blossoming romance with an older guy. Reminded of her situation with Brian, Chloe encourages Vanessa to be open and honest about her feelings. Unfortunately, Chloe's good intentions backfire when Vanessa's relationship puts her in grave danger. Will Chloe be able to save Vanessa before it's too late?

Still coping with her unresolved feelings for Brian, Chloe agrees to accompany him to meet his grandmother, Olivia, who was presumed dead. As Brian and Olivia become reacquainted, Chloe finally receives the email she's been hoping for. Meanwhile, Valentina's life hangs in the balance when she realizes that Zane's intentions have nothing to do with his feelings for Jasmine.
