Why Young Shawn Was Recast in Psych, Explained
Image
Psych, the police procedural with a comedic twist, is an iconic part of the mystery genre. The series’ creative approach to writing detective stories has charmed generations of fans. The show follows the exploits of Shawn Spencer, a brilliant investigator who uses a ruse of psychic abilities to fulfill his childhood dreams of adventure. One of the most beloved elements of the series continues to be the flashbacks to Shawn’s childhood. Shawn’s childhood self, or Young Shawn, becomes an integral part of each episode’s plot. Most episodes begin with a flashback to Shawn’s childhood in the 1980s and reveal how Shawn developed his amazing abilities. The flashbacks were not only a way to incorporate '80s nostalgia into a series that prided itself on constant John Hughes references but also helped endear the audience to Shawn’s character.

Shawn’s personality in Psych can be painfully sophomoric at times,...

'Home Alone' and Its Sequel 'Home Alone 2' Take Over Disney+
Image
Is it really Christmas until you've heard those words uttered: "Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals!"? The Christmas classic Home Alone and its sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, are now #2 and #4, respectively, on Disney+'s Top 10 list. In addition to all six Home Alone films, fans will find no shortage of Christmas selections on Disney+, such as The Polar Express, Mickey and the Very Many Christmases, The Santa Clause, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Fred Claus, Christmas with the Kranks, and Jingle All the Way.

In 2023, during the unveiling of Macaulay Culkin's star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Catherine O'Hara said that the love audiences have for Home Alone is a direct result of Culkin's work. "Home Alone was, is, and always will be a beloved global sensation," she said during the ceremony (via Newsweek). "The reason families all over the world can't let a year go...

’Home Alone’ and ‘Home Alone 2’ Jumps Up Disney+ Chart
Image
Home Alone is No. 1 on the Disney+ Top 10 chart in the United States, so there's reason to celebrate for those fans of "ya filthy animal." The must-see Christmas classic beat out not only the premiere of Jude Law's Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, but the holiday favorite outperformed the original Moana, too. The Goonies-eque Star Wars series checked in at No. 3, while all the hype surrounding Moana 2 inevitably played a part in Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s first go-round as Maui landing the No. 2 slot on the Top 10.

A number of other holiday hits filled out the Top 10, such as No. 4 The Polar Express, No 5. Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, No. 6 Mickey and the Very Many Christmases, and No. 8 The Santa Clause 2. Meanwhile, the box office blockbuster Deadpool & Wolverine came in at No. 7, while both The Lion King (1994) and the animated movie's 2019 CGI reimagining rounded out the...

‘Brothers’ Review: Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin Elevate a Crime Comedy With an Identity Crisis
Image
If you’re anything like me, when you saw the title for Max Barbakow’s new comedy “Brothers,” you thought, “Finally! A movie about brothers!”

I kid, I kid. But it’s not like there’s ever been any shortage of films about fraternal love and/or hatred: “Step Brothers,” “The Blues Brothers,” “The Sisters Brothers,” “Seven Brides for Seven Brothers,” “East of Eden,” “Fred Claus.” You know, the giants. Max Barbakow’s first feature, the hilarious “Palm Springs,” injected new vitality into the rom-com genre and the time loop drama at the same time. Could he also make a formulaic buddy comedy about two criminal siblings on a road trip seem special?

The answer is … a little, but let’s not go nuts. That, apparently, was the job of Barbakow’s cast. But we’ll get to that. First we have to introduce you to Peter Dinklage and Josh Brolin...

Robert Duvalls The Judge Role Features A Fitting Callback To His 62-Year-Old Movie With 93% On Rotten Tomatoes
Image
The Judge, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Robert Duvall, subtly references Duvall's feature film debut in To Kill A Mockingbird. Both The Judge and To Kill A Mockingbird share themes of corruption and murder, creating ethical dilemmas for the characters. Despite mixed reviews, The Judge gained popularity on Netflix for its powerful legal drama and strong cast performances.

Robert Duvall's role in The Judge includes a major callback to his feature film debut that was released more than 6 decades ago. Directed by David Dobkin, The Judge is a powerful legal drama that gained popularity on Netflix in May 2024 after originally being released in 2014. Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics, earning just a 48 Metascore and a 49% on Rotten Tomatoes, The Judge has strong ratings among audiences.

Duvall, the celebrated actor who starred in The Godfather (1971), The Godfather Part II (1974), Network (1976), and Apocalypse Now (1979), leads the cast of The Judge alongside...

‘A Christmas Story’ at 40: Peter Billingsley on Those 24-Hour Marathons and the Great ‘Die Hard’ Debate
Image
The star of one of the most iconic Christmas films of all time has waded into one of the holiday season’s most divisive annual debates: Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?

Peter Billingsley says yes — and in the season finale episode of his A Cinematic Christmas Journey podcast, which releases Dec. 15, he does his best to convince Die Hard cinematographer Jan de Bont.

“I mean, they didn’t think Die Hard was a Christmas movie. They happened to set it then, but the filmmakers weren’t intending that,” Billingsley explains. Instead, like many classics over the decades, its meaning to fans evolved. “This movie creates its own life, is in the culture and, over time, people discover it. It’s pretty great to see how that life can move in ways that the filmmakers never intended, or even ever imagined.” (Watch an exclusive clip from the episode below.)

Image

Once again, the holidays – or is it holidaze? – are upon us, bringing with it a flurry of Christmas movies.

You have your endless parade of cartoons, specials, Christmas-themed episodes of your favorite TV shows, bad holiday comedies (1996’s Jingle All the Way and 2007’s Fred Claus come to mind), and Christmas-set horror movies (1984’s Gremlins). Then there’s the cheesy yet feel-good Lifetime and Hallmark films. And how can we forget the 24-hour marathon of 1983’s A Christmas Story (celebrating its 40th anniversary this year), beginning on Christmas Eve and ending on Christmas Day?

If those don’t do it for you, maybe these lists of Christmas movies will.

Classic Christmas Movies

You can’t go wrong with these classics, which can lighten the hearts of even the most ardent cynics.

13 Unpopular Christmas Movie Opinions (According To Reddit)
Image
Christmas movies seem to be a divisive thing. Widely beloved Christmas classics are hated by some (typically for being too schmaltzy), and some under-appreciated movies are heralded as classics by a small, select few. And then there are the more non-traditional Christmas movies like Die Hard that result in endless discussion in debate, as people constantly argue over their merits as Christmas movies.

And while the classics and their qualities have seemingly been set in stone, one look at Reddit proves that that is certainly not the case. There are many unpopular opinions out there, nonetheless.

Update: 2022/12/24 11:00 Est By Shawn S. Lealos

Every year, there are Christmas movies that come out that often leave fans underwhelmed. However, they still find an audience. Whether it is Lindsay Logan in the new Netflix Christmas movie Falling for Christmas or a killer Santa Claus in Violent Night, there is something there for everyone to love and hate.

12 Best Portrayals Of Santa Claus In Movies, According To Reddit
Image
As arguably the most famous figure of the Christmas season, it is only natural that Santa Claus has appeared in movies time and time again. However, there are only so many times that the basic idea of a jolly bearded man in red delivering toys can be portrayed before it starts to get a bit stale. Recently, more movies have been taking more unique and interesting spins on Santa Claus.

From classic versions with a slight twist in The Christmas Chronicles to more nightmarish versions from Finnish horror, here are some of Reddit's favorite movie versions of Santa Claus.

Updated on December 9th, 2022 by Aya Tsintziras:

One of the most famous portrayals of Santa Claus is Tim Allen's take on the character, and the Disney+ spin-off show The Santa Clauses...

Violent Night, starring Stranger Things actor David Harbour, is a new dark comedy that incorporates an action-oriented Santa Claus who shows up to save the day. While these isn't a traditional depiction of the legendary personification of Christmas, it's an interesting new take on the classic character.

There are many different interpretations of Santa Claus both in the culture at large and in Christmas movies specifically. Many of them are more traditional takes while others are more action-packed. All of these depictions can be entertaining to different audiences, but for those who like their Santa Claus to kick a little ass, here are some of the best options.

Jim Carrey Mistaken For Paul Giamatti In Hilarious Google Search Glitch
Image
A Google search engine glitch sees searches for Jim Carrey come back humorously mislabeled as Paul Giamatti. Carrey and Giamatti are both acclaimed actors in their own right. However, Carrey is known for his comedic talent on display in films like Dumb and Dumber, Ace Ventura: Pet Detective, and Liar Liar. Giamatti tends to be better known for his dramatic work, like Sideways, American Splendor, and Billions. Still, both actors have made strides into other genres, with Carrey tackling drama in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and The Truman Show, and Giamatti working in comedies like Big Fat Liar and Fred Claus. While the actors have distinct career paths and don't share a passing resemblance, a new glitch seems to see them as one and the same.

A glitch in Google's search algorithm is confusing Carrey and Giamatti. Upon searching for Carrey, the results returned the correct actor's face.

10 Behind-The-Scenes Facts About A Christmas Story Christmas

The last movie anybody would have expected a sequel to is A Christmas Story, but 39 years later, A Christmas Story Christmas has just hit HBO Max. The movie is set 33 years after the original film, and it sees Ralphie returning home to Indiana after his father's death. A Christmas Story Christmas is just as funny as the original and unexpectedly heartfelt, and it sees the return of a lot of the original cast too.

A legacy sequel following the original movie's release by almost 40 years is sure to have tons of fascinating development stories. Rio Hackford, ‘Swingers’ Actor and Club Owner, Dies at 51
Rio Hackford, prominent club owner, actor and son of Oscar-winning filmmaker Taylor Hackford, has died. He was 51.

Friend of Hackford and screenwriter D.V. DeVincentis confirmed his death in an Instagram post on Friday, and Hackford’s stepmother Helen Mirren also posted an image tribute on Saturday.

“Rio was more attuned to experience than anyone I’ve ever known. He would stop what was happening to point it out, compel you to pay attention,” Divincentis wrote. “He would order you a must-have experience from a beloved menu and hold your eye as you paid attention to what was happening in your mouth.”

“Not simply obsessed with movies and how they mirrored and compelled, he was something more: a superfan of enumerable scenes, of particular gestures of unsung actors, weird career turns, roaring comebacks, cinema swan songs — all real experiences for you, when beheld consciously,” Divincentis continued.

His brother Alex Hackford told Variety that Hackford died Thursday,...

Amazon’s Robert Downey Jr.-Shane Black-Joel Silver Reteam For ‘Parker’ Crime Franchise To Launch With ‘Play Dirty’ Movie

Veteran producer Joel Silver (Kiss Kiss Bang Bang), Robert Downey Jr. and Susan Downey’s Team Downey and Amazon Studios are partnering to develop a series of feature film and television projects based on Donald E. Westlake’s series of highly popular Parker crime fiction novels, written under the pseudonym Richard Stark.

The first project emerging from the deal will be the film Play Dirty, in which Downey Jr. (Marvel’s Avengers franchise) is set to star as Parker, a professional thief who approaches his job with a straightforward, no-nonsense work ethic. He’s a craftsman. He’s brutal, brilliant. He’s also deadly. He’s whatever it takes to get the money and get away clean. Hilary Duff, Christopher Lowell, Francia Raisa, Suraj Sharma, Tien Tran, and Tom Ainsley in How I Met Your Father (2022)
When you’re a streaming service, there’s only one way to celebrate the New Year. And that’s by IP mining to bring back a franchise that had no business in coming back!

With its list of new releases for January 2022, Hulu is raiding CBS’s closet and premiering How I Met Your Father, a continuation of the sitcom How I Met Your Mother. Complaints about unnecessary rebooting aside, perhaps its worth giving the Hillary Duff starring series a chance. If nothing else, telling a story about 2022 from a future perspective might play well.

Aside from Himyf, there aren’t any other Hulu original series to speak of. Instead, Hulu is opting to once again beef up its film library. January 1 sees the arrival of Master and Commander, Seven, and a whole bunch of Star Treks. Hulu will also be the streaming home of some recently released film Indies,...

Hulu New Releases: August 2021
D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Paulina Alexis, Lane Factor, and Devery Jacobs in Reservation Dogs (2021)
While the other streaming services set up recurring franchises, Hulu has opted to get a bit more experimental with its original offerings in August 2021.

Hulu’s list of new releases this month is highlighted by three original series concepts with promise. Reservation Dogs premieres on August 9. Co-created by Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok), this story will follow four indigenous teenagers in Oklahoma as they stave off boredom and adulthood. Next up is Nine Perfect Strangers on August 18. This miniseries, based on a book of the same name, is produced by David E. Kelley and features staggering cast of Nicole Kidman, Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans, Samara Weaving, and more.

Only Murders in the Building is likely the biggest thing to look forward to in August though. Premiering on August 31, this comedy stars Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez as three true crime-obsessed friends who stumble into a true crime of their own.

Netflix Announces 18 New Movies/TV Shows For January
Image
We’ve only got a few weeks left of 2020, so we might as well start looking ahead to 2021. When it comes to new arrivals dropping on Netflix in January, it’s too early to get our hands on a full list at this stage, but a small amount of titles have already been announced, including a bunch of newly licensed movies that’ll be added on the first of the month as well as a couple of much-anticipated originals that are on the way throughout the rest of January.

On New Year’s Day, Netflix is delivering a number of classic 2000s films. A couple of them are Christmas flicks, too, so make sure to squeeze those in just before the festive season officially ends. Oddly enough, both star Vince Vaughn as well – 2007’s Fred Claus and 2008’s Four Christmases. Meanwhile, Zac Efron comedy 17 Again goes up the same day,...

Will Ferrell at an event for Die fast vergessene Welt (2009)
‘Eurovision Song Contest’ Film Review: Will Ferrell as an Icelandic Wannabe Pop Star?
Will Ferrell at an event for Die fast vergessene Welt (2009)
Before I say that “Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga” isn’t very funny, I should point out that I’ve underestimated the humor and the staying power of Will Ferrell comedies in the past. “Step Brothers” and “The Other Guys,” for instance, both seemed pretty flat the first time I saw them – but after a few more viewings, I began to appreciate the durability of Catalina Wine Mixer and Little River Band jokes.

So maybe one day “Eurovision Song Contest,” which premieres on Netflix on Friday, will be one of those Ferrell films that needs repeat viewings and that will one day prove to be a surprisingly durable source of laughs.

But, you know, probably not.

Oh, there’s humor to be had in making fun of the glitzy musical competition that brought us Abba (back in 1974), Celine Dion (in ’88) and others of their ilk. And Dan Stevens...

Emilia Clarke at an event for Terminator - Genisys (2015)
HBO Max New Releases: July 2020
Emilia Clarke at an event for Terminator - Genisys (2015)
HBO Max is set to enter into its second month of existence. And you know what that means: it’s Christmas in July!

HBO Max’s list of new releases for July 2020 is highlighted by one prominent Christmas movie: last year’s Emilia Clarke-starring Last Christmas. But the real cause for Christmas in July is all the exciting animated DC content coming our way on the first of the month. July 1 sees the arrival of just about every animated Batman project ever created. July 1 also features the arrival of just about every Justice League animated series ever created as well.

If that weren’t enough, July 1 is also when every live-action Superman movie (save for Man of Steel) makes it streaming debut. July is starting to look like a month where HBO Max establishes its real potential and geek culture bonafides…despite an at-times difficult rollout.

The HBO original...

HBO Max Announces Over 175 New Movies/TV Shows For July
Image
When HBO Max launched last month, DC fans hoped it would be the premiere place to go to watch all their favorite DC content. While the streaming service did have an impressive array of films and TV shows available on launch, there were a lot of notable missing titles, too, due to pre-existing licenses getting in the way. As time goes on, though, more DC properties will end up on the site. Case in point: this July will see a whole heap of superhero content go up on HBO Max.

Below you can find the full list of every movie and TV series coming to HBO Now, Go and Max next month, broken down by day of release. It includes an enormous amount of DC animated movies, mostly featuring Batman, the Justice League and Green Lantern. All of the Christopher Reeve Superman films will be up on HBO Max as of July,...

Eurovision Song Contest: Trailer and Release Date for Will Ferrell Netflix Comedy
Will Ferrell at an event for Die fast vergessene Welt (2009)
Will Ferrell’s singing voice is like a combination of Fergie and Jesus, which makes him the perfect choice to get involved in an international singing competition, which his character does in the upcoming Netflix film, fully titled Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga.

Ferrell was heavily involved with Eurovision, having co-written the script with frequent collaborator Andrew Steele, and also served as co-star and producer. The feature was directed by David Dobkin.

The premise is based on the long running international TV music competition, The Eurovision Song Contest. The contest, created in 1956, pits each participating nation from the European Broadcasting Union against one another, challenging them to write and perform an original song for a live TV and radio performance. Notable past winners include Sweden’s Abba in 1974 and Switzerland’s Celine Dion in 1988.

Best Santa Claus Movies of All Time
Who doesn't love Santa Claus? This jolly, rotund individual with the big white beard is loved and revered by all. In fact, he is the ultimate uniter. I defy you to tell me any religion that doesn't at least smile somewhat (regardless of how they feel about Christmas) when they see this iconic being. Santa Claus has been portrayed by people of all walks of life. Some looking like the Jolly Ole Saint Nick we see in Norman Rockwell paintings, and other's looking like Don Knotts. Santa is a symbol and that symbol has found no better home (no pun intended) than on the silver screen.

For years this character has been portrayed in movies. He has appeared in cameos and starring roles. In fact, it seems that just adding Santa Claus (and the holiday season) to a film can make it have a longer life. People love nostalgia. They...

Newswire: Melissa McCarthy to star in a Christmas musical called Margie Claus
Melissa McCarthy is about to make a try for the holiday musical canon; per The Hollywood Reporter, McCarthy has signed on to produce and star in Margie Claus, a new musical comedy that she’s working on with her husband and frequent production partner, Ben Falcone.

Starring McCarthy as Santa Claus’ wife, Margie, the film hopes to give the actress an Elf-style Christmas vehicle of her very own. Falcone—who also helmed Tammy and The Boss—will direct, from a script he’s co-writing with Benched creator Damon Jones.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear where Margie Claus—in which McCarthy’s character is forced to venture out of the workshop when her husband disappears on Christmas Eve—will fall in the wider “People With The Last Name Claus” Cinematic Universe, or if the producers have approached Fred Claus star Vince Vaughn about reprising his classic role.

‘Awards Chatter’ Podcast — Vince Vaughn (‘Hacksaw Ridge’)
Vince Vaughn (Courtesy: AP Images)

By: Scott Feinberg

The Hollywood Reporter

“I think what happened to me after The Break-Up was I was kind of more ‘booking jobs’ and not working from that same catalyst of, ‘I really believe in this and we all want to make the same movie,'” acknowledges the actor Vince Vaughn as we sit down at the London West Hollywood hotel to discuss his career on The Hollywood Reporter‘s ‘Awards Chatter’ podcast. Following a remarkable run of hit comedies in the early 2000s — among them, 2003’s Old School, 2004’s Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story and Starsky & Hutch and 2005’s Wedding Crashers — Vaughn had deliberately pivoted towards drama with the 2006 dramedy.

“But I didn’t follow through on it,” the 46-year-old says with unmistakable regret. Instead, he lost his way for a decade, during which he was humbled by critical and commercial disappointments — see Fred Claus...

The Twelve Days of Classic Christmas Movies – vote for your favourite!
Author: Cai Ross

Christmastime is here. Presumably you already have chestnuts roasting on an open fire, a turkey and some mistletoe, and your first screaming argument about who’s cooking for who and where. ’Tis the season for such timeless traditions, and along with a collective craving for manifestly ill-judged food combinations and a moratorium on our disapproval of comedy knitwear, classic Christmas movies are now a vital part of the great yuletide experience.

But what precisely is a classic Christmas movie? Timeless vintage offerings like Holiday Inn and Miracle on 34th Street are stuffed from titles to credits with all things Christmassy, yet you’ll also find films like Casablanca and The Great Escape on many festive film lists, which have nothing more to do with Christmas than Cannibal Holocaust.

Even the single greatest ‘Christmas Movie’ of all time, It’s a Wonderful Life has a pretty tenuous connection with the Holiday Season,...

Live action fairytale movies: UK release date calendar
facebook

twitter

google+

When to expect all the upcoming live action fairytale movies, including Dumbo, Beauty And The Beast and two Jungle Books…

You’ve probably noticed the influx of live action fairytales gracing cinemas in recent years. This isn’t about to stop any time soon, since re-spinning a recognisable fantastical yarn with real people instead of animated ones always makes big money for the studio behind it.

This process has become so popular that there are currently more of these live action fairytales in production than Marvel Studios, DC Entertainment or Star Wars movies. That’s a lot of films. (A whopping 21 by our count.)

Although it wadsn’t the first movie of this kind, Tim Burton’s Alice In Wonderland – and its worldwide gross of over a billion dollars – can surely take the credit for kick-starting this trend. Here are all the in-development movies trying to repeat its success,...

Enchanted 2 to film next year, new director found
Simon Brew Oct 7, 2016

Amy Adams is finally set to return for Enchanted 2, which has landed the director of the Hairspray musical...

A year after Disney resurrected the idea of a sequel to the lovely Enchanted, the studio is finally pressing ahead with the project. It's hired Adam Shankman (Hairspray) to direct the movie, and it's now being reported that the plan is to get it shooting by next summer. That would suggest a 2018 release date.

Amy Adams will, as you'd hope, return for the film. More as we hear it...

THR

From September 2015...

Well, we presumed this one had pretty much died a death. As much fun as we had with 2007's Enchanted, the hugely entertaining Disney movie where Amy Adam's Princess crosses over from animation to live action, it's been a while since we heard anything of the sequel. There had been talk last year of a new script being ordered,...

Enchanted 2 comes back to life
The sequel to the delightful Enchanted, starring Amy Adams, has come back to life at Disney...

Well, we presumed this one had pretty much died a death. As much fun as we had with 2007's Enchanted, the hugely entertaining Disney movie where Amy Adam's Princess crosses over from animation to live action, it's been a while since we heard anything of the sequel. There had been talk last year of a new script being ordered, but nothing seemed to come of it.

When the film was first talked about around five years ago, The Proposal's Anne Fletcher was taking over from Tarzan's Kevin Lima as director. Amy Adams was expected to return, as were fellow cast members Patrick Dempsey and James Marsden (although the fate of Susan Sarandon's villain was unclear).

It's now being reported that Disney has reawakened its interest in Enchanted 2, which is now...

Ed Helms at an event for Willkommen in Cedar Rapids (2011)
Christmas may still be a few months away, but Ed Helms, Amanda Seyfried and Diane Keaton will get you right in the spirit with this delightful trailer for Love the Coopers.

There are festive gags a plenty and narration by the legendary Steve Martin in a teaser that explores why we endure herculean challenges to travel home for the holidays.

Between Eleanor (Olivia Wilde) trying to pass off military man Joe (Jake Lacy) as her fiancé and single dad Hank (Ed Helms) wrangling a very sassy daughter, it's sure to be an eventful Christmas for the Coopers this year.

Steven Rogers – of Ps I Love You and Hope Floats fame – penned the festive comedy for director Jessie Nelson.

Nelson's had a varied career thus far, producing another wacky Christmas comedy called Fred Claus and directing the gripping Oscar-nominated drama I Am Sam.

Love the Coopers opens on November 13 in the Us.

The Charming "Danny Collins" Deserved More Time in the Spotlight
Charming. That’s the one word to describe Dan Fogelman’s brand of filmmaking. With a background that includes penning Cars, Fred Claus, and Tangled, his more recent, and perhaps breakthrough turn was as scribe of the, yes, charming Crazy, Stupid, Love. With a career altering performance from Steve Carell and a supporting cast that toted great turns by Ryan Gosling, Julianne Moore, and Emma Stone, with a little Kevin Bacon tossed in the starpower salad, Crazy, Stupid, Love deftly mixed midlife drama with heart-melting sincerity, all overpowered by good laughs throughout. Charming.

With Danny Collins, Fogelman makes his directorial debut with a cast fit for awards season and a project that is, well, you get it.
