One of the guys who founded the TikTok collective Hype House has now decided to "lock the door and throw away the key."
That's the preamble that leads into the first episode of Locked In With Alex Warren, a new podcast led by its titular social media star. In each episode, Warren will plumb into his guests' lives in order to "investigate the truth behind the clickbait."
Locked In is available on all major podcast platforms, and it's a "vodcast," which means that video versions of its installments will be available on YouTube. The first such video reveals Warren's dark, hemmed-in set, which fits the introspective and inquisitive nature of his new project.
On some podcasts, guests drink out of customized mugs that are emblazoned with the show's logo. On the Locked In set, however, the only drinking vessels are paper cups with "Locked In" written on them in Sharpie.

9-1-1: Lone Star‘s Rob Lowe will moonlight as star of Netflix’s newly greenlit comedy Unstable.
Co-created by Lowe, his son (and Lone Star story editor) John Owen Lowe and sitcom veteran Victor Fresco (Santa Clarita Diet, Better off Ted), Unstable is set in a cutting-edge biotech research company and follows “an introverted, socially challenged son who goes to work for his very successful, wildly eccentric father in order to save him from disaster,” per the official logline. “It is inspired by Rob and John Owen Lowe’s social media relationship, in which John Owen often humorously trolls his dad.

Contestants on the latest Netflix reality dating show have two options: get married or move on. A new trailer for the series “The Ultimatum: Marry or Move On” shows just how emotional that choice will be.
Six couples on the verge of marriage will have their relationship put to the test over the course of eight weeks. While one partner is ready for marriage, the other isn’t quite as sure. However, by the end of the two months, they must choose to commit to marriage with their original partner — or move on.
The twist is that, over the course of the show, they’ll each choose a potential different partner from one of the other couples to live with for three weeks.
In the trailer released Friday, some of the contestants are thriving from the new experience, while others aren’t faring as well.

As “Love Is Blind” comes to an end, “The Ultimatum” is born. During the Season 2 reunion special of the hit dating series, Netflix announced a new upcoming series from the same team.
“The Ultimatum,” which comes from “Married at First Sight” and “Love Is Blind” producer Kinetic Content and creator Chris Coelen, follows six couples on the verge of marriage. While one partner is ready to say “I do,” the other isn’t sure.
That’s where the ultimatum comes in: The pairs have eight weeks to either commit to marriage or move on from each other. During that time, they’ll each choose a new potential partner from a different couple and then move in with that person for three weeks. Through the “Temptation Island”-like process, the individuals will get a glimpse of what life could look like apart.

One of the first novel concepts introduced in Doug Liman’s tossed-off, super slight, and interminably paced “Locked Down” pandemic-set heist/relationship movie that tells you a little bit about the central couple’s status is the “confession avalanche.” The rather unpleasant Linda (Anne Hathaway) and disagreeable, perhaps vaguely mentally-unwell Paxton (Chiwetel Ejiofor) are weeks into the pandemic in London, both are in the throes of existential self-annihilation and have decided to part ways after the Covid-19 epidemic is over.

The first thing to know about Locked Down, director Doug Liman’s semi-surprise rom-com heist movie hitting HBO Max today, is that it’s a period piece. No sooner has the Warners logo slid across your screen to the sound of metropolitan life — bustling streets, honking horns, chattering voices — then we open on a people-less London intersection, all silence and emptiness. We’re in the initial weeks of the pandemic, when the city’s residents sheltered in place, the evenings were filled with the banging of pots and pans, and...

“Locked Down,” the latest and least heightened entry in the emerging (and hopefully short-lived) sub-genre of films shot during Covid-19, opens with a sight that won’t make sense until a bit later: The fattest possible hedgehog bumbling through a London garden like it’s been lapping up cheap wine all day. A few minutes later, Doug Liman’s mostly fun rallying cry for the rush of living counters that odd start with a sight that immediately makes all the sense in the world: Anne Hathaway screaming her way into a movie that was made amid the worst pandemic in more than a century.
Some people just have to act, and Hathaway’s effective performance as a frazzled CEO who’s forced to quarantine with her soon-to-be-ex-husband (Chiwetel Ejiofor) is so big and busy that it feels like she’s trying to squeeze in enough acting to sustain her until this whole thing blows over.

Read the previous part in this series: the film careers of Christopher Eccleston and David Tennant, here.
By 2009, the new version of Doctor Who had become not only an integral part of Saturday night television and a huge Christmas ratings winner but also an international success all over again. David Tennant, who had played the Time Lord since 2005 and was, arguably, more popular than any Doctor since the mighty Tom Baker hung up his scarf in 1981, had announced his resignation from the part he loved in October 2008. Many wondered how the incoming showrunner, Steven Moffat, would follow Tennant and what kind of show would emerge.

We caught up recently with I Spit on Your Grave reboot series director Steven R. Monroe to garner his thoughts on the polarized critical response to the CineTel Films/Anchor Bay Entertainment release of his feature I Spit On Your Grave 2, as well as on the future of the franchise, and more. Monroe, whose extensive directorial credits include the genre features House of 9 (2005), It Waits (2005), and the upcoming Cerina Vincent-vehicle MoniKa, as well as the 2010 Sarah Butler-starring remake of Meir Zarchi’s controversial 1978 rape/revenge feature I Spit On Your Grave, proved refreshing in his honesty in regards to what drew him to directing the sequel, as well as his understanding of the polarized response to it, and his exasperation with a faction of the blogosphere, among other things. Having premiered at London’s FILM4 FrightFest this past August with a subsequent release to Blu-ray, DVD...

Film London announces Lilting, the latest project from Film London Microwave, will be distributed by Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye in the UK with Protagonist Pictures to manage international sales. A striking feature debut from director Hong Khaou with an all-star cast led by Ben Whishaw (Skyfall, Cloud Atlas) and Cheng Pei Pei (Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon), Lilting explores love without a common language.
Written and directed by Khaou and produced by Dominic Buchanan, Lilting is the eighth film from the successful feature film fund Film London Microwave. Alongside Whishaw and Pei Pei, the film also stars Peter Bowles (Blow-Up, The Bank Job), Morven Christie (House of 9, The Young Victoria) and Andrew Leung (The List).
As part of Film London Microwave’s mentorship component, award-winning film-maker Michael Winterbottom acted as writer/director Khaou’s mentor, while producer Buchanan received guidance and support from his mentor Ken Marshall, the producer of London to Brighton, Filth and Song for Marion.
Curzon Film World’s Artificial Eye is known for its discerning taste in the best of European and world cinema. The label has released more winners of the Cannes Palme d'Or than any other UK distributor, with titles including The Class (2008) and The White Ribbon (2009).
Commercially-minded and creatively-spirited Protagonist Pictures is an international sales company committed to strong relationships with film-makers. Recent highlights in their catalogue include Searching for Sugar Man, Sightseers, The Imposter and Microwave’s Shifty. This year at Cannes they represent The Selfish Giant by Clio Barnard, screening in Directors’ Fortnight, and in the Critics’ Week, Paul Wright’s debut feature For Those In Peril.
Lilting tells the story of a Chinese mother (Pei Pei) as she grieves for her son (Leung) following his untimely death. He was her eyes and ears in the UK, their adopted country, and without him she is stranded. The only person left is his lover (Whishaw) – who she knows only as his flat mate. Together they are forced to overcome their differences and unite in sorrow whilst struggling against the absence of a shared language. An intimate and thoughtful film, Lilting addresses overcoming cultural and generational boundaries, the power of memory, and the lifelines and relationships formed in the face of grief.
Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of Film London and the British Film Commission, said: “Lilting is a moving cinematic achievement and I am delighted that it will reach UK audiences through Curzon Film World and that Protagonist will be managing international sales. It is a testament to Microwave’s innovative approach to film-making that its projects attract high-calibre talent and prestigious commercial distributors and sales agents. The scheme’s successful track record is also a result of the Microwave team, who are integral to nurturing and guiding all our film-makers. I am proud to see another Microwave feature proving itself in the commercial marketplace and hope this is only the start of Lilting’s success.”
Louisa Dent, Managing Director of Curzon Film World said: "When we read the script, it was clear that this was something special. There is an emotional urgency that is compelling and honest. Hong is a real emerging talent and his short films marked him out. We knew that the Microwave/Film London team would be great partners on this and with a quality cast it seemed liked a perfect fit for us.”
Mike Goodridge, CEO of Protagonist Pictures said: “I had admired Hong's shorts so it was with great excitement that I watched his first feature Lilting. But Hong exceeds expectations: the film is an accomplished and mature portrait of love and loss, graced by two extraordinary lead performances. The whole Protagonist team was knocked out by it and we are confident it will be embraced by distributors around the world.”
Funded by Film London Microwave, additional finance came from production companies Stink Films and Andy Brunskill’s recently launched Sums Film and Media Ltd., supported by financier/producer Bob & Co, Lim Kay Sui and Neo Swee Lin.
Film London Microwave is a unique training-through-production scheme delivered in partnership with BBC Films and with support from Creative Skillset. At a time when remakes – like them or not – are status quo for the movie industry, few films achieve a level of being anywhere near as good as their originals. This is especially true for the horror genre. After so many still-births and disappointments (Friday the 13th, Nightmare on Elm Street, Last House on the Left, to name but a few), fans have longed for someone to take a beloved film from the past and improve it, updating it to fit a more modern sensibility. Many have tried… most fail.
Enter director Steven R. Monroe and his re-imagining of the exploitation classic I Spit On Your Grave (review here) (Blu-ray/DVD review here). Long whispered about by fans as a cornerstone of late ’70s grindhouse fare, I Spit On Your Grave is admittedly a tough row to hoe. The film tells the story of a woman living alone in a...

In the past few years there has been an influx of remakes in the horror genre. We all know that’s not a good thing but unfortunately the mainstream fans line the aisles and spend the bucks that allows this to continue to happen. It is well documented that I have not ever been nor will I ever be a fan of these remakes. I will say now that I am man enough to admit when I’m wrong. I guess the formula needs to be correct for a successful remake. Then comes walking in I Spit on Your Grave. Read more to see what I thought of this remake of the 1978 film of the same name.
The tale of I Spit on Your Grave is one that all fathers dread when they have a daughter, as it is worse than anything that Liam Neeson’s daughter in Taken could ever imagine.

American World Pictures and Bron Studios have released the first images from Steven R. Monroe’s “Jabberwocky”, which just completed production and is now headed into post. Monroe is coming off the remake of “I Spit on Your Grave”, and previously directed the films “It Waits” and “House of 9″, both of which I found very decent. “Jabberwocky” looks like a swords-and-monsters fantasy movie, and co-stars Tahmoh Penikett (of “Battlestar Galactica” fame) and Kacey Barnfield (recently in “Resident Evil: Afterlife”). Jabberwocky chronicles the story of a young squire (Michael Worth) who, alongside his brother (Tahmoh Penikett), must become a warrior to save his people and the woman he loves (Kacey Barnfield) after a horrific beast is unleashed on the Kingdom. Starring Tahmoh Penikett, Michael Worth, Kacey Barnfield, Raffaello Degruttola, Steven Waddington, Richard Riddell, Ian Virgo, and directed by Steven R. Monroe. Look for it later this year. Good money says...

A few years back, when a horror remake was announced nearly every week, I figured if "they" (those Hollywood suits calling the shots) felt The Last House on the Left could get a modern facelift, then it was only a matter of time before it was deemed okay to retell the tough-as-nails, merciless and infamous Meir Zarchi film I Spit On Your Grave (aka Day of the Woman ). Sure enough, it happened. Quietly, however, in Louisiana under the direction of Steven R. Monroe who's resume is riddled with creature features like Wyvern and It Waits . Prior to those efforts, he helmed House of 9 and The Contract . Monroe gathered up a cast for Grave that includes Sarah Butler, Daniel Franzese, Jeff Branson, Rodney Eastman, Chad Lindberg and Andrew Howard. On the surface,...

Sordid, explicit and violent subject matter has long generated big bucks at the box office (while tame in the eyes of modern audiences, Tod Browning’s Dracula is a prime example, having saved Universal Studios from impending bankruptcy upon its release in 1931). As the years have passed, studios have continued to siphon from the horror well, filling their coffers with revenue generated by an ever-evolving cadre of increasingly brutal horror titles from Hitchcock’s Psycho to Paramount Pictures’ Friday the 13th series and beyond. 1970’s independent filmmakers, too, realized the financial possibilities and stretched the boundaries of horror cinema with such shocking productions as The Texas Chain Saw Massacre, The Last House on the Left and The Babysitter Murders (aka Halloween).
In recent years all of these horror titles have been remade and released theatrically with varying degrees of success. Platinum Dunes lucratively re-explored Tobe Hooper’s Texas Chain Saw...

Dennis Hopper’s long film career began with the 1955 teen angst classic Rebel Without a Cause with James Dean, and he helped usher in Hollywood’s New Wave as director and star of the counterculture anthem Easy Rider in 1969. He later became a respected character actor, specializing in such off-beat villains as the drug-addicted, obscenity-spouting Frank Black in David Lynch’s Blue Velvet (1986), crazed bomber Howard Payne in the 1994 action-thriller Speed with Keanu Reeves and Sandra Bullock, and Deacon in Kevin Costner’s soggy post-apocalyptic saga Waterworld (1995).
Hopper was born in Dodge City, Kansas on May 17, 1936. He moved to San Diego, California with his family in the late 1940s, and began studying at the local Old Globe Theater while attending high school. He soon signed with Warner Brothers and was featured in a small role in 1955’s Rebel Without a Cause. He was later featured as Jordan Benedict III, the...

The word "icon" was invented for people like Dennis Hopper, and today we got the sad news that early this morning he lost his battle with prostate cancer at the age of 74.
USA Today has a comprehensive overview of Hopper's life and career that's fascinating reading for those unfamiliar with the man. For genre fans he'll probably always best be known as Frank Booth in David Lynch's groundbreaking 1986 film Blue Velvet, but he's also left his mark in several other horror projects including a 1963 appearance in "The Twilight Zone" episode "He's Alive", The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2, George A. Romero's Land of the Dead, and House of 9.
For many of us of a certain age, however, Hopper will always be the quintessential anti-hero Billy from Easy Rider. For others he'll be that hyper-manic photojournalist who rambles on about Marlon Brando's nutty Col. Kurtz in 1979's Apocalypse Now.

Anchor Bay Films has picked up U.S., Canada, Australia, the U.K. and New Zealand rights to the remake of the 1978 cult classic “I Spit On Your Grave”. The remake is coming to you courtesy of director Steven R. Monroe, who has done a couple of nice B-horror movies in the past, including “It Waits” with Cerina Vincent and “House of 9″ with Dennis Hopper. The “Grave” remake will star Sarah Butler (left) as a city girl who travels to a cabin to write a novel, only to find herself the victim of assault and rape at the hands of some greasy locals. She lives, and returns to exact brutal revenge against her assailants. Much fun is had by all. Well, except for the guys she’s killing, that is. Meanwhile, the lovely and vivacious Carla Gugino (“Sin City”) has joined the cast of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s revenge actioner “Faster”. The film,...
