The irony is that if the ship had struck the berg head-on, the damage albeit considerable would not have caused the ship to sink. Another irony is that throwing the engines into reverse caused such cavitation that the rudder was useless. If they had not done this, they would have had a chance to swerve enough to have survived the damage amidships.
