Amazingly enough yes, German secret agents during the First World War did indeed try to ferment conflict on the Mexico/US Border in order to distract the still neutral America from materially supporting or even joining the Allies against the Central Powers. This would eventually backfire on the Germans disastrously as when the intercepted 'Zimmerman telegram' revealed their schemes it tipped the outraged US into joining the Allies against them.

Three actors, Ned Nederlander (Martin Short), Lucky Day (Steve Martin), and Dusty Bottoms (Chevy Chase), who portray heroes in silent films, accept a job offer in Mexico, starring in what they think is a show with El Guapo (Alfonso Arau), a notorious bandit harassing the inhabitants of the small desert village of Santo Poco. The problem is that El Guapo is the real thing, as are his bullets.

No. ¡Three Amigos! Is based on a screenplay jointly written by actor Steve Martin, singer/composer Randy Newman, and screenwriter/producer Lorne Michaels. It is a comedy, loosely based the 1960 film Die glorreichen Sieben (1960), which itself was based on the1954 film Die sieben Samurai (1954) (Seven Samurai) by Japanese filmmaker Akira Kurosawa.

"Guapo" translates from the Spanish language as "handsome man".

With el Guapo and his bandidos, guns ablazing, following right behind them, the Amigos and Carmen (Patrice Martinez) escape in the German's (Kai Wulff) Tubman 601 airplane with Ned at the controls. Landing safely in Santo Poco, they alert the villagers that el Guapo is right behind and that they need to plan their defense using the talents and skills of the villagers, which is sewing. El Guapo and his men arrive to find the town deserted. Suddenly, every window, door, and rooftop has Amigos on it, firing at the bandidos from all directions and totally confusing them. Eventually, all of el Guapo's men either desert him or die in the gunfire, leaving el Guapo to fight alone. A final shot rings out, and el Guapo falls in the road. As el Guapo lay dying, the villagers—all dressed in Amigo costumes—gather around him. "That was a good trick," el Guapo tells Lucky, then shoots him in the foot and dies. Their task completed, the Amigos say goodbye to the grateful villagers and mount their horses. Carmen's papa (Abel Franco) tosses a bag of money to Ned, but he returns it, saying, "Our reward is that justice has been done." In the final scene, the Amigos remind the villagers that "Wherever there is injustice, you will find us. Wherever there is suffering, we'll be there. Wherever liberty is threatened, you will find...the Three Amigos!" As the villagers wave goodbye, the Amigos ride off into the sunset.
