This film was supposed to be a drama. Star Robert Blake felt that the film should be a comedy instead. So the script was rewritten during production to make it funnier.

Actress Dyan Cannon learned how to drive a 13-gear 30-ton semi-trailer diesel truck for this picture.

Dyan Cannon once said of this movie for publicity for this picture: "These days it's not enough to be able to act. In a crazy romantic chase story like this one, you have to dive in boots and all and cope with the high jumps. Such as learning to drive that great big gorgeous tractor-trailer rig. Those babies have thirteen gears and weigh in at more than thirty tons. We could have faked it, but I wanted to really understand how Madie would feel being in total command of that thing.".

To prepare for their lead roles in the movie, actor Robert Blake and actress Dyan Cannon before principal photography, underwent truck driving training from specialist truckie driving instructor Frank Santhuff at the United States Federal Truck Driving School.

Three bull actors portrayed the bull. A 1550 pound big Brangus bull named "Bumper" was used for the chase sequence with actor Robert Blake whilst the other two bulls were used for close-up shots due to them being quiets with more tamer dispositions. After principal photography on the picture was completed, the cattle featured in the movie were sent back to the rodeo circuit.
