I don't understand why traditional folks watch movies that are meant to be unconventional and non-traditional and then complain that they're not traditional 😭
Warning, spoiler ahead!
I personally really liked the movie. I don't relate to any of the characters, nor would I go down any of their routes, but I liked how unlike OKK, the characters don't end up changing their ideals to fit what the society expects of them- no marriage, compromises. Both Shreya and Siddharth and quite independent and confident in their values. Shreya is doing a great job as a single parent, and Sid is initially focused on his career. The film is extremely practical in showing that although individuals can be comfortable with their unconventional choices, when it comes to their children who grow up in a society that has traditional values embedded in it, they can grow up confused and unable to fit-in, as we see with Parthiv and the situation at school with the 'Father's Week'. It is realistic in portraying his need/want of a father, while Shreya doesn't quite need a partner. In the end, they both come together for one reason: Parthiv. And of course, their undeniable chemistry makes the climax just that much more satisfying 😍
I also liked how we were all waiting for them to find out that Sid was P James, only for it to never happen! It made that connection between Sid and Parthiv more real and sincere- Sid doesn't love Parthiv because he's biologically bound to do so, he simply sees Parthiv as his son. If he had found out, he probably would have felt conflicted as he never wanted kids in the first place. My theory is that he was supposed to find out when that small piece of paper fell from the frame in Nithya's room, but her laptop diverted his attention. Kiruthiga did say that that was the original ending which was later modified, and I reckon that piece of paper had P James and his address written on it (the note Shreya had used to reach the bar).
And the soundtrack!!! ARR continues to exceed all expectations.
Lavender Nerame is seriously slept on. That song is a banger. Alexandra's bridge is just mesmerising!
Oh and Yennai Izhukkuthadi is incredible.
Overall, I loved the performances by Nithya and Ravi. My only issue would be that half the stills they used in the promotions never really appear in the movie's scenes, I just wish we had more scenes between Shreya and Sid. They work so well together 💕
But the subtlety of the existing scenes, again, adds to the idea that they both come together for Parthiv more than they do because of their love for each other. The movie is Kadhalikka Neramillai, after all!
