Caste: Everything We Know So Far About Ava DuVernay's Next Feature
Image
Between Warner Bros. axing her DC Comics movie, "New Gods," Netflix dropping her fantasy novel series adaptation, "Wings of Fire," and The CW canceling her DC superhero drama, "Naomi," it feels like it's been way too long since Ava DuVernay got to make headlines for good reasons. Thankfully, that changes with the celebrated storyteller's next directorial feature, "Caste," which began filming in December 2022 in Georgia ahead of planned shoots in Germany and India. This would be the "Selma" filmmaker's first time behind the camera on a full-length movie since her 2018 Disney fantasy adventure, "A Wrinkle in Time".

To her credit, DuVernay hasn't allowed those various cancelations to slow her down. Quite the opposite, she wrapped up her familial drama series "Queen Sugar" while also helming part of HBO Max's "Dmz" comic book miniseries adaptation over that same period of time (among other things — more on that to come). "Caste...

‘Colin in Black and White,’ Netflix’s Kaepernick Coming-of-Age Series, Is Provocative but Messy: TV Review
Image
Former NFL quarterback turned professional lightning rod Colin Kaepernick has a story uniquely well-suited to being adapted for a deep-pocketed prestige streamer like Netflix. Rather than fade into obscurity in the five years since he was last invited to join an NFL franchise, Kaepernick has become an even more potent (and still unlikely) symbol of America’s roots-deep racial injustice. Especially since not much has changed — these days, county school boards are routinely harangued about critical race theory thanks to the same white fragility that fueled a backlash against Kaepernick’s silent, kneeling protests back in 2016.

Kaepernick’s saga sounds like an ingredient list for a spicy, topical docuseries to join what feels like a new golden age of sports documentaries. But Kaepernick wanted to tell his story as a scripted drama focused on the formative high school years when his athletic evolution dovetailed with the awakening of his Black identity.

Netflix’s Colin Kaepernick Series Adds Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Offerman to Cast
Image
Mary-Louise Parker and Nick Offerman have joined the cast of Netflix’s limited series about Colin Kaepernick’s formative years, “Colin in Black & White.”

The two veteran actors will portray the adoptive parents of Kaepernick, Teresa and Rick Kaepernick, respectively. They join the previously-announced Jaden Michael, who will play the professional athlete.

Kaepernick played six seasons in the NFL for the San Francisco 49ers before becoming a free agent after choosing to kneel when the national anthem played in the stadium before his games in 2016. This action was his way of protesting police brutality and systemic racism. In 2019 he settled a lawsuit with the NFL, which he claimed was working to keep him from playing, but he is still a free agent.

The six-episode series, however, is not set to focus on Kaepernick’s recent fame, but instead explore his adolescent years when he was developing his athletic prowess...
