The Lost Boys wasn’t just a massive box office success, it was also a game-changer in vampire media, making the undead hip again and convincing a whole generation that they too could become juvenile vampire hunters (though I know a lot of people who wouldn’t mind joining Kiefer Sutherland’s punk-rock group of dreamy Nosferatu).
And as is often in the case in Hollywood, the film’s near-instant popularity meant that the studio was immediately interested in a follow-up, with director Joel Schumacher even coming up with a pitch titled “The Lost Girls” meant to follow a different tribe of female vampires. Of course, we all know that this project never materialized, and fans were forever left to wonder about what a proper Lost Boys sequel might look like. Or were they?

Delays are bound to happen when making movies, but something was clearly wrong when Amusement was postponed not once but twice in 2008. It wasn’t long before John Simpson’s American directorial debut was removed from the theatrical schedule altogether and then later dropped on DVD that following year. Although going from the big-screen to direct-to-video is an undeserved fate in some cases, this movie’s new destination was understandable. The unfavorable feedback from an early test screening — the word “disastrous” was tossed around — forced Warner Bros to salvage the potential flop now on its hands. Nevertheless, the negative consensus hasn’t stopped Amusement from amassing a small fan base over the years; its followers focus on this panned movie’s few merits rather than its many shortcomings.
At first, Amusement looks to be an anthology; this horror movie’s first three acts are well defined and almost function as standalone short features.

Jennifer Coolidge has revealed that she is willing to return in future American Pie movies in her own inimitable way. One of her early roles was an appearance in the original 1999 sex comedy American Pie, directed by Chris and Paul Weitz. She played the mother of Seann William Scott's rambunctious cad Steve Stifler, a woman whose appearance inspired the popularization of the term "Milf" and who eventually slept with her son's friend Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas). She would return to the role three times in each of the film's official sequels: 2001's American Pie 2, 2003's American Wedding, and 2012's American Reunion.
Last night, NBC aired The 80th Golden Globes, where Coolidge won a trophy for her supporting role on the HBO series The White Lotus.

Brace yourselves. This list of the Top 100 Greatest Gay Movies is probably going to generate some howls of protest thanks to a rather major upset in the rankings. Frankly, one that surprised the hell out of us here at AfterElton.
But before we get to that, an introduction. A few weeks ago we asked AfterElton readers to submit up to ten of their favorite films by write-in vote. We conducted a similar poll several years ago, but a lot has happened culturally since then, and a number of worthy movies of gay interest have been released. We wanted to see how your list of favorites had changed.
We also wanted to expand our list to 100 from the top 50 we had done previously. We figured there were finally enough quality gay films to justify the expansion. And we wanted to break out gay documentaries onto their own list (You'll find the...

In 1982, controversial film director Wilson Wyler Concannon released his only film, The Hills Run Red. Because of its graphic depiction of sadism and murder, the film was quickly pulled from theatres. Film historians can find neither any prints of the film nor any of the cast and crew – only a poorly assembled teaser of the film.
Cut to the present day and fanatic horror fan and aspiring film-maker Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrink) is obsessed with finding the lost film, devoting all his free time to dissecting the trailer, director’s life and any other miniscule bit of information that his girlfriend Sarina (Janet Montgomery) feels neglected.
Tyler soon tracks down Concannon’s daughter Alexa (Sophie Monk) and convinces her, despite her hesitancy, to guide them to a possible copy of the film that may still be laying around in her dad’s old home out in the bush.

In the latest sequel for the franchise, Lost Boys: The Thirst brings the vampire-slaying Frog brothers back to the forefront, nearly 25 years after they were introduced to audiences in the first film, The Lost Boys, which went on to become a cult classic and pop culture phenomenon. Now, Edgar (Corey Feldman) and Alan Frog (Jamison Newlander) have joined forces to kick some alpha vampire butt and save a young boy from a gang of night crawlers in San Cazador, a sleepy Northern California town. These bloodsuckers are growing a vampire army by handing out The Thirst, a drug made out of vampire blood, at raves all across the country. To stop it, the Frog brothers will have to enter a battle that will test their strength and finally put an end to the undead.

If you had told me when I was eleven that 23 years later I'd be speaking to the Frog brothers, my little head would have exploded. Who would have thought the vampire killers from Joel Schumacher's The Lost Boys would still be in business? Needless to say, they are - together again in Lost Boys: The Thirst ( review ), coming to DVD and Blu-Ray October 12. Earlier this month, I found myself sitting across from Corey Feldman and Jamison Newlander (aka Edgar and Alan Frog) to discuss their reunion in the second sequel to spin off from the '87 film. Shock Till You Drop: How soon after Lost Boys: The Tribe wrapped did real talks of a third entry start? How much say did you have in the creative process? Corey Feldman: Tad Hilgenbrink is out! [laughs] I'm just kidding....

The Hills Run Red is distributed by Dark Castle Entertainment, and stars the very sexy Sophie Monk (Date Movie,The Legend of Awesomest Maximus), Tad Hilgenbrink (American Pie presents: Band Camp, Lost Boys 2:The Tribe) and William Sadler (Tv’s Roswell).
This movie is not to be confused with the movie, The Hills Have Eyes…in fact, this movie is probably a little bit better than that movie… yes I just said that! Thrr is based around a young film student who is in search of the finished product from the 90’s film The Hills Run Red (coincidence? Maybe!). In the early scenes of the movie we find out that a movie was made and everyone that was involved with the movie cannot be found, even the director of the movie has not been seen since the early 90’s.

A few months back, I reviewed a direct to DVD horror release called The Last Resort. Stuck for words about the film’s confusing plot and shaky logic, I started pontificating about the differences between this generation’s direct-to-dvd horror releases and their spiritual heirs, the low-budget sci-fi films of the fifties. I commented that something sincere had been lost between now and then, and now, with The Hills Run Red, I have had that idea exemplified in a way far more eloquent than I stated then. It’s not that the movie is especially good, because it isn’t, but in its aspirations towards wit and its slavish devotion to the slasher films of yesteryear, it reveals more about the gradual shift in horror’s values than an essay or review probably ever could.

Four months ago I attended an advance screening of The Hills Run Red, a Warner Premier straight-to-dvd film about a group of college kids in search of a cult director and his long-lost horror film of the same name. Long story short, I really didn't like it, but I found myself in the minority, so in the interest of fairness, I spent the next couple of months asking colleagues who saw it why they seemed to like it so much.
Because I never really got an answer that satisfied my lingering questions and criticisms, I decided to watch it again. And while the film's premise - obsessive horror geeks rediscovering a lost horror classic that was banished for being too intense - is a really, really terrific one, director Dave Parker's latest effort is not equal to that premise. A mess of half-considered genre conventions with only a few compelling ideas to connect them,...

We've all heard the story of the lost film; that old horror classic that mysteriously and tragically falls through the cracks never to be seen again. A handful of them, such as the often bereaved London After Midnight, go on to attain a legendary status that was likely only made possible by their very absence. But what if, what if, some old forgotten film did carry the whisper of something dark, something real, something fat, deadly, and wanting its mother. Some mysteries are best left sleeping.
Horror geek Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrink) has deaf ears for any such advice. The Hills Run Red is a lost film; a notorious slasher that disappeared without a trace after a very small screening many years ago. Hungry to gain some notoriety by finding the missing treasure, he tracks down the promiscuous and drugged out stripper daughter (Sophie Monk) of the film's director (William Sadler), sobers the girl up,...

The Hills Run Red (just out on DVD from Warner Premiere) is about the quest to track down a lost horror film of the same title, one supposedly so shocking that our protagonist is obsessed with witnessing its full, terrible vision. And yet this Hills has been issued in an R-rated cut only, with references on the audio commentary to scenes its creators wanted to include, but were too gruesome. Irony?
Nevertheless, there’s enough on view in Hills Run Red to push that R to its limits, and to justify its title. Seattle – Dalton Trumbo was one of the biggest names in screenwriting who for the longest time wasn’t allowed to show his name on the screen. He won two Oscars, but wasn’t allowed to step onto the stage.
At the peak of his career in 1947, he was brought before the House Un-American Activities Committee to testify about communists in Hollywood films. Like other screenwriters before the Huac, he refused to answer the questions. Their decision to not name names got them blacklisted in the industry and sent to prison. Hollywood is a gluttonous beast, known for chewing up talent, processing it through her labyrinthine digestive track and depositing said talent, devoid of confidence, on her tarnished boulevards. Some filmmakers, however, can take their licks and bite back. Brush off the bullshit and set out to do what they were meant to do: Make movies. Strangely enough, this theme of determination is paralleled in the creation and the story of The Hills Run Red . Dark Castle and Warner Premiere's direct-to-dvd release (coming on September 29) tells of Tyler (Tad Hilgenbrink), a horror fan who sets out to find a complete cut of the titular film which is overshadowed with a notorious history. Back in April, Fango hosted a panel for The Hills Run Red at our Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors. The much-buzzed-about film has been called "Nasty as hell" by our own Tony Timpone - and Filmmaker/FX guru and Fango blogger Robert Hall (Laid To Rest) said that Hrr "is one of if not the best film you see this fall".
While we still don't have the exact date for it, Warner Premiere is expected to announce one shortly and our friend Joey Monda just hit us with the cover art.

In case you're wondering why the news updates were so scarce here yesterday it was because we were in La attending an industry screening for Dave Parker's The Hills Run Red. We do get to leave the office every now and again, ya know. It happens. I swear. Any way -- wow, was this one worth the trip!
For those unfamiliar with the movie (and I can assure you, you wont be for very long) let's take a look at a quick plot crunch!

Just about the entire staff descended upon the La Convention Center for Fangoria and Creation's latest powerhouse convention, and we were hungry for some entertainment. Well, booze too but that came later.
As expected some of the bigger movies (i.e., Drag Me to Hell) got lots of attention and were well received. But there were three smaller films stuck in between the chaos that we'd like to take this time to champion a bit. Mind you the following assessments are based upon short clips and/or trailers that were shown.

Earlier this week we pointed you in the direction of the Fearsome Fango Film Show Line-Up for the upcoming Los Angeles Weekend of Horrors running April 17-19, 2009. Now that the full event schedule is live, we thought we'd point out a few "choice cuts" (i.e., those panels that we here at Dread Central are either moderating, participating in, or just generally think you shouldn't miss).
Note: All guests/events listed are tentative. More stars are still joining the fun at this late stage, so expect lots of surprises all weekend long. And for the first time ever, there will be a second track of programming that will take place concurrently with the main track on Saturday and Sunday!

A second sequel to the 1987 Joel Schumacher film The Lost Boys looks to be moving forward, with Blood Disgusting reporting veteran TV writer Evan Charnov has signed on to write the script. Just like the first sequel, Lost Boys: The Tribe, part three will be a straight to disc release. The site also says Corey Feldman will be back to play Edgar Frog as the flick is expected to focus on the vampire hunter character, more so than The Tribe. As for Corey Haim, who hits the big screen in April in Crank 2, Bd says it’s very unlikely that he’ll return. Moviehole is also reporting that Jamison Newlander will be back to play Alan Frog. Newlander appeared in The Tribe but his scenes were deleted. Moviehole sources claim this new flick is the “official return of the Frog brothers”. The original film centered on two young Arizonans...

The first story: Shelby (Laura Breckenridge) and her boyfriend Rob (Lost Boys: The Tribe’s Tad Hilgenbrink) are driving at night. Rob is behind the wheel, and has joined a convoy with two other vehicles to make better time.
Stopping at a gas station to refuel, Rob meets Tryton (May’s Kevin Gage), the driver of the 18-wheeler leading the way, and a father traveling with his family who is picking up the rear. As the trio hits the highway again, Shelby tells Rob that she saw a girl in the back of Tryton’s truck. Rob assures her that Tryton told him that he’s traveling alone. Then Shelby sees the girl in the back of the truck again—this time holding up a Help Me sign…

Dave Parker is close to completing The Hills Run Red , a Dark Castle and Warner Premiere production that pulls him back into the cinematic horror fold. And although there's no release date yet , the MPAA has weighed in on his cut. Surprise, surprise...it got an R for "strong bloody horror violence and torture, grisly images, sexual content, nudity, language and some drug use." Sophie Monk, Tad Hilgenbrink, William Sadler and Alex Wyndham star in this direct-to-dvd effort about a film fanatic who gets more than he bargained for when he ventures into the wooded location of an infamous slasher movie...and learns principal photography never truly ended. David J. Schow and John Dumbrow penned the script. If you missed it, we snared a pretty cool image from Hills at...

Some goods news and some bad news. The bad news is that the long delayed Amusement won't be hitting theaters. The good news is that it'll be available on DVD and Blu-ray on January 20th from Warner Home Entertainment (where's my Trick 'R Treat?!). Keir O'Donnell, Katheryn Winnick, Laura Breckenridge, Jessica Lucas, Tad Hilgenbrinck all star in the film directed by John Simpson. Jake Wade Wall's script centers on a traumatized woman who's questioned by a cop and a psychiatrist about three stories -- involving a clown, a hotel and a convoy -- that involve her and two of her female friends from childhood.

Warner Picturehouse's long-delayed anthology horror movie written by Jake Wade Wall ( When a Stranger Calls ), Amusement , is bowing in the U.S. on DVD (and Blu-ray) January 20th after all. Following well over a year of speculation about whether it will get a theatrical release, the movie was handed over to New Line Home Entertainment for distribution duties. And there you have it, a DVD release with no special features to speak of. Cover art front and back can be found below. Directed by John Simpson - and starring Jessica Lucas, Tad Hilgenbrink, Keir O'Donnell and Katheryn Winnick - Amusement is a trio of terror tales involving a young woman and her friends who are preyed upon by someone from their past.

I remember seeing all sorts of cool stuff at the 2007 San Diego Comic Con for Picturehouse's horror anthology, Amusement, which has since gone under reshoots and varius edits over the past two years. Now that Picturehouse has closed its doors, it;s up to Warner Bros. to choose what to do with this pic. Will you ever see it? Who knows... I wish they'd just dump it on DVD already. Anyways, it looks like it might be getting a release internationally as new stills have arisen, read on to check 'em out. Directed by John Simpson from a screenplay by Jack Wade Wall, the film stars Keir O'Donnell, Katheryn Winnick, Laura Breckenridge, Jessica Lucas and Tad Hilgenbrinck.

I came home to several new Blu-ray discs that arrived in the time I was away and out of all of them eight of them hit the shelves today. Six of them I am going to detail here as they are catalog titles. The others I will get to in a second. The first one was Top Gun of which I reviewed on HD DVD (review here) and was not very kind to considering the HD DVD edition contained none of the features from the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. Well, I am happy to say the Blu-ray comes with all the goodies (documentaries, music videos, commentaries, etc.) that I loved from the DVD. On top of that... included is a DTS soundtrack, a Huge step up from the HD DVD Dolby DigitalPlus.
